NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday criticized Center for inaction against billionaire Gautam Adani over accusations of bribery by American authorities.
Gautam Adani, founder and chairman of Ports-to-Energy conglomerate, his cousin Sagar Adani and another key executive, Vneet Jaain, have been charged by the government. US Department of Justice (DOJ) for being part of an alleged scheme to pay $265 million in bribes to Indian officials to win solar energy contracts that would generate $2 billion in profits over 20 years.

Speaking from outside Parliament, where the Congress leader was attending the winter session, Rahul said Adani should be in jail. “Do you think Adani will accept the charges? It’s clear he’s going to deny the allegations. The point is that he needs to be arrested, as we have already said. Hundreds of people are arrested on minor charges and the gentleman has been indicted. the United States for thousands of crores, he should be in jail and the government is protecting him,” Rahul said.


On the third day of the winter session of Parliament, there was an uproar with the opposition demanding a discussion on Adani’s allegations. Soon after the commencement of the two Houses, Lok Sabha was adjourned until 12 noon and Rajya Sabha until 11.30 am.

A statement issued by Adani Group on Wednesday claimed that the businessman and his cousin Sagar have not been charged for any violation of the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) in the complaint filed by the US authorities in a court in a bribery case.
In a stock exchange filing, Adani Green Energy Ltd, which is at the center of the bribery allegations, said reports claiming the three have been charged with FCPA violations are “inaccurate.”
