Pope Leo XIV gave his first public comments since he took over as leader of the Roman Catholic Church on Thursday from the balcony of the Sint -Pietersbasiliek. He urged the world to seek peace and to remember those who suffer. The following is the transcript of the Vatican of his speech.
Peace be with you! Dearest brothers and sisters, this was the first greeting of the risen Christ, the good shepherd who gave his life for the herd of God. I would also like this peace to concern your heart, reach your families and all the people, wherever they are; And all peoples, and all earth: peace be with you.
This is the peace of the risen Christ, a disarming and modest and preserving peace. It comes from God. God, who loves us all, without any limits or conditions. In our ears, let’s keep the weak but always brave voice of Pope Francis, that blessed Rome – the pope that Rome and the world bless that day on the morning of Easter.
Allow me to continue the same blessing. God loves us, we will not prevail. We are all in the hands of God. Without fear, united, hand in hand with God and under each other, we will move forward. We are disciples of Christ, Christ goes for us and the world needs its light. Humanity needs him as a bridge to reach God and His love. You help us to build bridges with dialogue and meeting, so that we can all be one people who are always in peace.
Thank you, Pope Franciscus!
Thank you to my cardinal brothers who have chosen me to be the successor of Peter and to walk with you with you as a united church that allows everything to peace and justice, collaborate as women and men, faithful to Jesus Christ without fear of Christ, to be missionaries, faithful to the gospel.
I am a son of Saint Augustine, an Augustinian. He said, “With you I am a Christian, a bishop for you.” So we can all walk together to that home country that God has prepared for us.
To the church of Rome, a special greeting: we have to see together how we can be a mission church, build bridges, dialogue, always open to receiving open arms for everyone, such as this square, open to everyone who needs our charity, our presence, dialogue, love.
Hello everyone and especially for that of my diocese of Chiclayo, in Peru, a loyal, loyal people who accompany the bishop and help the bishop.
For all your brothers and sisters of Rome, Italy, from the whole world, we want to be a synodal church, walk and always be looking for peace, charity, closeness, especially for those who suffer.
Today is the day of the plea to our -Life -woman of Pompeii.
Our blessed mother Mary always wants to walk with us, be close to us, she always wants to help us with her intercession and her love. So let’s pray together for this mission, and for the entire church and for peace in the world.
We ask for this special grace of Mary, our mother.
Greetings Maria.
