‘Ready to discuss’: Doctors on Mamata Banerjee’s ‘last attempt’ to resolve crisis | India News – Times of India
NEW DELHI: Young doctors wrote to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee that they were ready to hold a discussion to resolve the impasse between the protesting medical professionals and the Bengali governmentThe Bengal CM will hold a meeting at her residence on Saturday at 6 pm.
After Banerjee’s visit to the protest site earlier in the day, West Bengal Junior Doctors Front wrote to the TMC leader, calling it an “exceptional gesture of goodwill.”
“We are grateful that you have shown an exceptional gesture of goodwill by coming to us in this bad weather and sharing your thoughts with us. We see this as a welcome step towards a smooth discussion and collective clarity on our five-point demands, for which we have been protesting peacefully for the past thirty-five days,” the spokespersons said in an email to the CM.
The email asked for the time and place of the meeting. It said: “We are more than willing to have a conversation in your presence, with appropriate representation and transparency as agreed upon by both parties.”
In response, the State Government said: I have received your email, dated: 14th September, 2024. In this regard, you are kindly invited for an open-minded discussion, today at 6:00 p.m. (14/9/2024) at the residence of the Hon’ble Chief Minister, Government of West Bengal at Kalighat. A delegation of 15 junior doctors may attend the said meeting. We look forward to your positive response in this regard.
Earlier today, Banerjee had appealed to the protesting doctors to resume their work and said, “I came to meet you as your ‘didi’ (elder sister), not as the chief minister,” she said. “I assure you that I will look into your demands and take action if anyone is found guilty.”
The young doctors protested demanding better security in government hospitals and dismissal of senior officials following the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
