Ready to see Deadpool and Wolverine? Watch these 3 must-see Marvel and X-Men movies first
As you may have noticed, Deadpool and Wolverine is coming out this week and it’s a pretty big deal. This year’s Marvel Phase Five film comes with a lot of anticipation from fans of the fourth-wall-breaking funnyman, and I’m literally going to the IMAX theater to see it as soon as this article is done.
If you – like me – want to make sure you get the most out of the brash mercenary and his entertainingly intense sidekick, you’ll want to watch all three of these films on Disney Plus first. Because two things are for sure: there will be plenty of references, and ain’t nobody got time to watch every X-Men and relevant Marvel movie before they hit theaters this week. But in the rare event that you do, here are our guides on how to watch the Marvel movies in order and how to watch the X-Men movies in order.
Death Pole
I know, duh. But while it is absolutely possible to enjoy Deadpool and Wolverine on its own terms (despite having read the first reviews myself), the first Death Pole movie is so much fun that it’s an absolute treat to watch over and over again. It gives us the full Wade Wilson origin story, a very touching and tragic romance, and a ton of visual gags that make me laugh so hard my kids are embarrassed and threaten to disown me.
Logan
The tenth X-Men film and the final installment of the Wolverine trilogy is quite dark, more like a tragic western than a brightly colored CGI fight fest. It is the superhero movie as art, do not forgive with Adamantium claws, and the description ‘No Country for Old X-Men’ sums it up beautifully. And that seriousness, that weight, that sense of ‘A Big Important Movie’ sets Wolverine up beautifully for the silliness and mockery of Deadpool vs. Wolverine.
Deadpool 2 / Once upon a Deadpool
The second Death Pole movie and the hilarious family-friendly version starring Fred Savage aren’t quite as good as the first. But there’s a montage of superhero flights that is honestly one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen in a movie theater, and that part made me laugh so hard and uncontrollably I thought I was going to be thrown out of the movie. It’s gloriously silly, a great way to see how the other X-Men view our antihero, and it’s just the amuse-bouche you need before watching the third installment this week.
