Recruitment agency reveals which phrases employees should NEVER use at work – but are you guilty of them?

According to one recruiter, success at work is sometimes less about what you say and more about what you don’t say.

Toronto, Canada-based Emily Durham took to TikTok to share her top tips for success in the workplace — and how to avoid getting the wrong look.

“You can do all the right things in the world and be the best employee, but if you say things like this, I’m sure you’re going to get some weird looks,” she said in the video.

First of all, Emily advises not to make non-committal statements in the workplace.

“Oh, I know this is our five-year plan, but I don’t know if I’ll still be there,” she used as an example.

“You can do all the good work in the world, be the best employee, but if you say any of these things, I guarantee you'll get some funny looks,” she said in the video.

The recruitment expert also advised against making excuses for work.

“Oh, that part of the project isn’t my job, that’s someone else’s job,” Emily listed.

“Both of those could be true, but try to keep your mouth shut,” she joked.

The next piece of advice Emily gave was to never talk negatively about your boss, no matter how justified you think it is.

“Ultimately, it’s usually your boss who determines how much money you make and whether or not you get promoted,” she stressed.

Emily’s final piece of advice was to never act like there’s nothing to do at work.

“You’re not going to say you’re not busy anymore,” she insisted.

“The more you say that, the more people assume your job isn’t important or you’d have more to do,” she noted.

Emily answered questions from viewers about how to approach specific issues, especially when quitting your job.

“I’m keeping it general! Like my goals are to keep working on XYZ and hopefully get into a role like INSERT TITLE,” she advised.

Viewers flooded her comments with people sharing their own stories about people sharing too much information at work.

“I told my boss he was doing a terrible job as a manager. And I was fired within the hour,” one user wrote.

“Just a few days ago he was telling everyone what a great employee I am and how much they appreciate my work.”

“I wish I had heard this two years ago but now everyone at work hates me even though they tell me how great my job is,” someone else added. “I LOVE it there (I really don’t).”
