The most popular holiday destination this summer for British tourists travelling by train is Penrith in Cumbria.
This is evident from data from the Virgin Trains ticketing appwhere bookings for this market town have increased by 106 percent in the past six weeks.
Penrith is known for its 14th century castle and its easy access to the Lake District, Pennines and the Eden Valley. It is particularly close to Ullswater, the second largest lake in the Lake District National Park.
Whitstable saw the second highest increase in train ticket bookings at 92 percent.
This Kent seaside resort is famous for its oysters and the Old Neptune pub on Whitstable’s pebble beach offers fantastic sunset views.

Another resort, Weston-super-Mare, saw the third highest increase in bookings, with an 85 per cent rise in the number of tickets sold.
The city’s top attractions include the popular Marine Lake beach, the arcades of the Grand Pier and the largest helicopter museum in the world.
Edinburgh (4th) saw an 85 percent increase in ticket bookings. The city’s historic castle is one of its main attractions, while many tourists flock to the Scottish capital in August to take part in the Edinburgh Fringe performance arts festival.
Penzance (5th) in Cornwall saw a 27 per cent increase in train bookings. The seaside town has easy access to beaches and the Minack open-air theatre, which overlooks the sea, is less than 10 miles away.
Brighton (6th) has seen train bookings rise 12 per cent in the past six weeks. The seaside town’s promenade is a hive of bars and restaurants, while The Lanes shopping area is packed with quirky independent boutiques.
Weston-super-Mare (3rd) saw train bookings rise by 85 percent
