RG Kar rudder: hunger strike by junior doctors continues for 9th day
“Their conditions are deteriorating, but the state administration remains unmoved,” said a leader of the restive Junior Doctors Forum.
Doctors of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital demand justice for a victim from hospital, including removal of Health Minister NS Nigam and improved workplace safety. Their protest began after a postdoctoral intern was allegedly raped and murdered at the state hospital on August 9.
After almost fifty days of ‘stop work’ in two phases, the doctors started a hunger strike. They have also asked the public to observe “Arandhan” (no cooking) on Sunday in support of their cause.
A significant number of people joined the hunger strike during the Durga Puja festivities to show their solidarity. One person was arrested by the Kolkata Police the day after the incident, and the CBI is currently investigating the case on the orders of the Calcutta High Court.
