KOLKATA: The hunger strike Through junior doctors in West Bengal entered the ninth day on Sunday to push for the fulfillment of their demands after the RG Kar hospital incident. The doctors continue to protest despite the declining health parameters of the protesters. In recent days, three of the young doctors who observed ‘fasting unto death’ in Calcutta and Siliguri have so far been hospitalized after their condition deteriorated.
“Their conditions are deteriorating, but the state administration remains unmoved,” said a leader of the restive Junior Doctors Forum.
Doctors of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital demand justice for a victim from hospital, including removal of Health Minister NS Nigam and improved workplace safety. Their protest began after a postdoctoral intern was allegedly raped and murdered at the state hospital on August 9.
After almost fifty days of ‘stop work’ in two phases, the doctors started a hunger strike. They have also asked the public to observe “Arandhan” (no cooking) on ​​Sunday in support of their cause.
A significant number of people joined the hunger strike during the Durga Puja festivities to show their solidarity. One person was arrested by the Kolkata Police the day after the incident, and the CBI is currently investigating the case on the orders of the Calcutta High Court.
