RG Kar rape, murder case: Kolkata police chief, two health officials dismissed after CM Mamata Banerjee meets doctors – Times of India


NEW DELHI: West Bengal Prime Minister Mamata Banerjee announced the removal of the Kolkata Police Chief and two health department officials after a meeting with aggressive young doctors. The decision came after nearly two hours of discussions between the state government and the protesting doctorsaimed at addressing their concerns after the horrific RG Kar in Kolkata Faculty of Medicine rape and murder case.
Addressing the media, Banerjee said, “We have tried to listen to the young doctors… we have decided to replace the DC (Kolkata Police Commissioner)… he agreed to resign himself. In the health servicethey demanded the removal of three people, and we agreed to two. We have agreed to 99% of their demands, what else can we do? We have asked the junior doctors to return to work so that ordinary citizens will not suffer.”
Banerjee also confirmed that three of the four demands of the junior doctors had been accepted. Among the changes, DC North Abhishek Gupta will be removed, and a decision on his replacement will be made soon. In addition, the state government promised to prioritize the safety of doctors in the future.
A new committee, headed by the chief secretary, has been formed to address future grievances of the doctors. “They can raise any issue with the chief secretary in future,” added the Bengal CM, expressing hope for a resolution and urging the doctors to end their strike.
