The 65-year-old announcer, who took part in his first solo trial in which he attempted to untie a rope with his mouth, was treated by medics after he raised concerns at the camp, before being taken for precautionary treatment.

An ITV spokesperson told The Sun: ‘Richard was unwell in the early hours and was seen immediately by our medical team on site.

“Since then he has been taken to hospital as a precaution, the health and safety of our camp mates is our priority.”

A source added: ‘It was horrific – campers were very upset and concerned, all crew members and medics rushed to help him. It was a real shock for everyone involved.’

The insider added that Richard was taken to hospital as a precaution, but is now “on the mend.”

A few hours earlier, Richard had only earned four stars in his first solo trial, and was forced to use his mouth to try to untie some knots to fetch stars hanging from a rope.

As the guts and offal fell on him, the host struggled to untie the string to the stars and said irritably, “Holy Moly,” before the horn sounded again, marking the end of the task.

About the knot he said, ‘Who made these knots? It’s wet and it’s tight. This one isn’t tight,” Ant and Dec laugh.

‘What a disappointment,’ said Richard. ‘We are going to eat something tonight. I really hoped I could do better than that.”

A disheartened Richard returned to camp and told them how difficult he found the process, and the camp mates graciously accepted that he’d only managed to get four stars, leading to a measly squirrel dinner.

Before arriving at the castle, where celebrities usually live on simple meals of rice and beans, Richard admitted he didn’t have any preparation.

He told MailOnline: ‘Some people say eat less, but others say you’re going to lose weight, so put it on [before you go in]. I haven’t done either one.

‘I’m not a big eater, I’m a grazer, I can’t finish my plate. I am most concerned about how I will deal with boredom. That’s why I want people to vote for me to do the tests.’

Richard discussed which tests he’s most afraid of: “I don’t have any specific phobias, but the only thing I’m afraid of is that I’m not very comfortable with heights.”
