Samsung could develop smart glasses in collaboration with Google

Samsung may have a pair of smart glasses in the works, according to a report. The South Korean tech conglomerate is reportedly working with Google to develop the pair, and it could be powered by a Qualcomm chipset. The report reportedly quoted a Qualcomm official as saying he was pleased with the success of Meta’s Ray-Ban Smart Glasses. This development follows Samsung’s announcement last year about developing a mixed-reality headset in partnership with Google.

In a conversation Speaking to CNBC, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon hinted at a pair of smart glasses being developed by Samsung and Google. Amon said, “It’s going to be a new product, new experiences. What I really expect from this partnership is that I want everyone who has a phone to buy a pair of glasses to go with it.”

Citing Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) as the “inflection point” for the success of the Meta Ray-Ban Smart Glasses, Amon said he was “incredibly excited.” The alleged smart glasses are supposed to run AI on the device and via the cloud.

While the official did not reveal explicit details about the alleged product, it is strongly believed to be the same wearable device that Samsung confirmed was in development in 2023. However, at the time, it was speculated that it would be an Extended Reality (XR) headset that would be available to developers in October this year.

What’s notable is that XR is an umbrella term that encompasses all three visual technologies: augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR). While Samsung has previously launched a VR headset (Gear VR), this would mark the first time that the South Korean company is launching an XR headset. Previous reports suggested that the alleged device could be powered by an XR2 Gen2+ platform, which uses artificial intelligence (AI) to bring AR and MR experiences to devices.

However, it’s unclear whether the alleged XR headset is actually the smart glasses Qualcomm’s CEO has hinted at.
