Samsung could make ‘radically different’ AI smartphones in the future
Samsung is reportedly working on new smartphones with artificial intelligence (AI) that could be “radically different” from the company’s existing smartphones. The development was shared by Samsung’s mobile division head in an interaction with a publication. The report also added that Samsung is investing heavily in the research and development of these new AI smartphones. However, it is not clear whether these will be launched as a separate smartphone lineup or will replace the company’s current flagship phones.
Samsung reportedly working on new AI smartphones
Speak Speaking to the Australian Financial Review, TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile Experience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics, said the South Korean tech giant is now focusing on creating new AI smartphones that could be “radically different from Samsung’s existing phones.” He did not specify what would be different about these phones.
Roh also stressed that the “lion’s share” of Samsung MX’s research and development efforts was also focused on developing these new devices, the report said. Despite hinting at big changes with these new AI-powered smartphones, he didn’t explain what those changes might entail. They could mean new form factors, larger or smaller displays, new sensors, or the addition of dedicated neural processing units (NPUs).
Notably, earlier this month, the tech giant globally introduced the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6. In addition to iterative hardware upgrades and a new hinge mechanism, the smartphones also brought new AI features under the Galaxy AI umbrella.
Some of the interesting features include Sketch to Image for the Galaxy Z Fold 6, which uses the S Pen. Users can create a rough sketch that can be converted into realistic art using AI. Note Assist, which can record audio and transcribe and summarize it, has also been added to both devices.
The clamshell-style Galaxy Z Flip 6 gets a new ProVisual Engine for its cameras that’s powered by AI. It can detect objects, analyze lighting conditions and isolate facial features to improve images. The AI can optimize images and enhance the quality of the objects, even at a 10x zoom range.
