Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 vs. Z Fold 5: Spec Comparison – Video

Foldable phones

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Six is here. But what does this new phone bring? Let’s take a look at the specs and how they compare to the previous Z Fold Five. And remember, specs can only tell us so much. So subscribe to see more about this new foldable phone and everything Samsung announced during its Summer Unpacked event. The Z Fold Six is part of Samsung’s new Galaxy Z series, which the company says is its thinnest and lightest to date. But how much thinner and lighter are we talking? Well, when closed, the Z 45 is 0.53 inches thick, while the 0.48 inches is thick and when opened out the Five is 0.24 inches thick, while the Six is 0.22 inches thick, so the Z Fold Six is thinner, but if you cut it or I guess in this case but if you fold it, the Z Fold Five weighs 253g, while the Z Fold Six weighs 239g. Another notable difference between these two phones is that the Z fold six has a newer chip, the Z fold five has Qualcomm’s Snapdragon eighth gen two chip optimized for the Galaxy series. The Z fold six. Did you guess it? Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon eighth gen three chip. Samsung says that this new chip is optimized for AI processing. It’s not surprising that Samsung is stressing that its new phone can support AI, because AI is the buzzword in tech right now. And because Samsung introduced a suite of generative AI features called Galaxy AI earlier this year, Galaxy AI is available on the Z fold five and six. So both will have a lot of AI features. Now, Samsung has teased a bunch of new AI features in its unpacked keynote that we know will be on the Z fold six, like conversation mode and the Interpreter app. But it’s unclear whether these or other new features will trickle down to older Samsung devices like the Z fold five, the Z fold five and six, both of which come in 256- and 512-gigabyte and 1-terabyte storage options, all with 12 gigabytes of RAM. The Z fold five starts at $1,800, while the Z fold six starts at $1,900. Next, I’ll discuss the displays. Let’s start with the internal display. So both the Z fold five and the six have a 7.6-inch a moled internal display with a refresh rate of 1 to 120 hertz, but the resolution differs slightly between the two models. The internal display on the Z fold five has a resolution of 2176 by 1812 pixels. While the display on the Z fold six has a resolution of 2160 by 1856 pixels. Now, let’s discuss the cover display. The Z fold five has a 6.2-inch a-moled cover display with a refresh rate of 1 to 120 hertz. While the Z fold six has a slightly larger 6.3-inch a-moled cover display with also a 1 to 120 hertz refresh rate. As for resolution, the cover display on this fold five has a resolution of 2316 by 904 pixels. While the display on the Z fold six has a resolution of 2376 by 968 pixels. When it comes to water and dust resistance, the Z fold five has an IP x 8 rating. While the Z fold six has an IP 48 rating, the Z fold 6 is potentially more resistant to dust and particles. Thanks to that new IP 48 rating, but just like the Z fold five, it can also be submerged in water for short periods of time. I’m really interested to see how the Z fold five and six cameras compare in real life since the six has that newer chip. But I will say that on paper, the camera specs between the two phones seem pretty similar. Now, there are a few different ways to take selfies on these phones if you’re used to a non-foldable smartphone. The way that will probably feel the most familiar is to fold the phone closed and use the cover screen selfie camera. As far as specs go, the cover screen selfie cameras on both the Z fold five and Z fold six are 10-megapixels with an F 2.2 lens. But these are foldable phones, so there is another way to take a selfie. If you’re using the phone as a tablet, you can take a photo using the under-display camera that remains largely hidden behind that internal screen. As far as specs go, the under-display cameras on both the Z fold five and Z fold six are four-megapixels with an F 1.8 lens. As for the cameras on the back, both phones have a triple-camera system. More specifically, both have a 50-megapixel wide-angle camera with an F 1.8 lens, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera with an F 2.2 lens, and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera with an F 2.4 lens. Both rear cameras also have 3x optical zoom. Both the Z fold five and six have a 4,400-milliamp-hour battery. Now for some context: the two-year-old Z fold four also has a 44-milliamp-hour battery. However, in his Z fold five review, my colleague Patrick Holland found that the Z fold five’s battery lasts about an hour or two longer on a single charge than the Z fold four’s. The Z fold four’s battery likely drains faster than its newer replacements due to an older, less efficient chipset. And that gives me hope that even though the Z fold five and six have the same battery capacity, the Z fold six’s battery will last longer due to its newer chip. Assuming that the use of more AI features doesn’t destroy that efficiency. You already know that we’ll be putting the new phone’s battery to the test. So stay tuned. Those are some of the biggest differences between the brand new Z fold six and the Z fold five.
