Samsung may release a rollable smartphone with a flexible screen in 2025

Samsung is working on a smartphone with a large, rollable display that could launch next year, according to a report. The handset will reportedly feature a flexible display that can be rolled out to form a much larger screen. If the alleged launch date is accurate, the device could launch six years after the company’s first foldable smartphone launched. Samsung has yet to announce plans to launch such a device, but the company has previously unveiled new display technologies, including a hybrid device that folds and slides at the same time.

The Elec reports (in Korean) that Samsung is developing a phone with a rollable screen that can be expanded to a 12.4-inch display — almost as big as some Android tablets. Such a device would also be larger than the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design that was recently unveiled in China with a 10.2-inch display.

The device is also said to feature an under-display (UDC) camera, suggesting that the foldable phone will not feature a camera cutout, offering an uninterrupted viewing experience. The large display on the device, coupled with the UDC technology, could result in a high price tag for Samsung’s alleged rollable phone.

This isn’t the first new foldable display Samsung has shown off. In recent years, the South Korean tech conglomerate has shown off new foldable phones that fold inward twice, like the letter G, while another prototype folds into the shape of the letter Z. The company has also been granted patents for phones with rollable and tri-fold displays.

Samsung was recently outdone by Huawei: the Chinese company launched the Mate XT Ultimate Design earlier this month as the world’s first smartphone with three folding screens, while a commercial version of the triple-folding screens shown off by Samsung has yet to be unveiled.

The Elec report reveals that Samsung has shifted its focus to rollable phones, with the company expected to launch the phone in the second half of 2025. We can expect more details about the device to emerge in the coming months.
