‘Sar pe laal topi Rusi…’: PM Modi’s shoutout to Raj Kapoor, Mithun at Indian diaspora event in Moscow | India News – Times of India
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address to the Indian diaspora in Moscow, called Russia a “trusted friend” who has always been “India’s partner in happiness and sorrow”. Prime Minister Modi also mentioned the famous Hindi song ‘Sar pe laal topi Rusi’ in his speech where he paid tribute to iconic actors Raj Kapoor and Mithun Chakraborty for strengthening ties between the two countries.
“The song was once sung in every household here — ‘Sir pe lal topi Rusi, phir bhi dil hai Hindustani’. This song may have become old, but the sentiments are ever relevant,” he said.
Prime Minister Modi referred to the popular song ‘Mera joota hai Japani’ from the 1955 Bollywood film ‘Shree 420’.

In the early 1950s, when the theme of “India-Rusi bhai bhai” was in vogue, Raj Kapoor became a sensation in Russia. His films, especially “Shri 420” and “Awara”, were among the most successful productions in Russia and are still broadcast on many cable networks, dubbed in Russian or with subtitles.
The story of Raj Kapoor’s popularity also inspired a subplot in Vikramaditya Motwane’s recent series ‘Jubilee’, which chronicled the Soviet Union’s intense interest in the Indian film industry in the wake of Independence.

Raj Kapoor’s popularity also paved the way for the next generations of stars in India. After Raj Kapoor came another phenomenon: Mithun Chakraborty whose 80s disco moves became an instant rage in Russia.
His film ‘Disco Dancer’ rocked the popularity charts all over Russia. People are still seen doing covers of the song ‘Jimmy, jimmy’.
Praising their contributions, Prime Minister Modi said on Tuesday, “Artists like Raj Kapoor and Mithun Da have strengthened the friendship between India and Russia. The strength of our relations has been tested many times and each time our friendship has grown stronger.”
PM Modi also thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for maintaining good relations with India. “I would especially like to thank the leadership of my dear friend President Putin. He has done a tremendous job in strengthening this partnership for over two decades. This is the sixth time I am coming to Russia in the last 10 years and during those years we have met 17 times. All these meetings have built trust and respect,” he said while addressing the Indian diaspora in Moscow.
