Secret function that blocks drafts from French doors and some windows
THERE IS nothing worse than sitting on a pleasant evening and noticing a draft coming through your patio door.
But one man has shared a handy hack to prevent that – and it works on some windows too.
Demonstrating at his own door in a video on his TikTok pageDan said, “I just learned some valuable information about these little screws.”
He turned the camera on the screw, which is on the metal latch on the inside of the door, and explained, “See this little notch here?
“If you turn it so it points toward the seal, it tightens the door for winter.”
It also works in the summer because you can turn it the other way to “loosen it up” and let in “a little more air” when it’s hot outside.

“It’s great!” Daan concluded.
“So do this now to prevent your house from getting drafty in the winter.
“There we are!”
“Important information to keep drafts out in winter!” Dan captioned the video.
“This little screw can be turned to tighten the door seal in the winter and loosened to let air flow in the summer!”
And people were quick to hit the comments to praise Dan for sharing the hack, with one writing: “I closed my doors today after seeing this video.”
“How do you spin it?” asked another.
“I tried, I won’t give in!”
“I used a drill with a 5mm allen key just because it was a bit stiff!” Zane replied.
“I just got all my doors and windows fixed and I can’t thank you enough,” said a third.
“I’ve done this on all my windows and it works!” someone else wrote.
“I have a window at the back of my living room that was always draughty.
4 ways to keep your energy bill low
Laura Court-Jones, small business editor at Bionic shared her tips.
1. Turn your heating down one degree
You probably won’t even notice this small temperature difference, but what you will notice is a saving on your energy bill. By turning the thermostat down a step, you can quickly start saving. This one small action only takes a few seconds and could potentially reduce your heating costs by €171.70.
2. Turn off appliances and lights
It sounds simple, but completely turning off appliances and lights that aren’t in use can lower your energy bills, especially in winter. By switching off lights and appliances when they are not in use, you can save up to €20 per year on your energy bill
3. Install a smart meter
Smart meters are a great way to keep control of your energy consumption, especially as they allow you to see where and when your gas and electricity are being used.
4. Consider changing energy supplier
No matter how satisfied you are with your current energy supplier, they may not give you the best deals, especially if you have let a fixed rate contract expire without taking out a new contract. If you haven’t looked at alternative rates lately, you might not know that there are better options out there.
“I did last year and now I don’t.”
“Thanks! This solved my problem after trying to figure out how to adjust my door for a while,” another added.
“I learned something today, thanks lol,” someone else wrote.
“Why didn’t we know about this before? Thanks for sharing!” another gushed.
As someone else added: ‘You are a legend for showing me this.
“Works for Windows too, but I assume you know this.”
However, others warned people not to adjust things if you’re not sure.
“They are for adjustments,” one person wrote.
“There are other things you can adjust, but once you start messing with the alignment of the doors, the locks and handles don’t stick or sit tight.”
“Be warned: if you’ve never done this before, your window might not open again!” another added.
“I did it to my door and the lock broke because it wouldn’t open afterward.”
“It doesn’t do anything for the draft,” a third commented.
“It’s a stepped bolt that doesn’t move anything.”
