Naomi Osaka has credited Serena Williams for her metamorphosis into tennis star and four-time Grand Slam winner.

The Japanese, who moved to the United States at the age of three, did her best to convey the impact Williams has had on her life.

“I think her legacy is so wide that you can’t even describe it in words,” Osaka said at a pre-US Open press conference on Sunday.

Serena Williams is an idol for those who have followed her footsteps, including Naomi Osaka

“She changed the sport so much. She has introduced people who have never heard of tennis to the sport.

“And I think I’m a product of what she’s done. I wouldn’t be here without Serena, Venus, you know, her whole family.’

“I’m very grateful to her and I always try to think of how to put it into words, but I really think she’s the greatest force in the sport.”

Interestingly, while Osaka named some of the tennis world’s titans, Osaka omitted Serbian 21-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic.

“And that’s not like deliberately trying to make Federer or Nadal smaller. I just think she’s the greatest thing that will ever be in the sport.

“It’s just an honor to see her play and to see her give us a chance to watch her more because I remember seeing an interview she did, I don’t know what it was, one on the job she was in, when she retires she will never tell anyone.

“So I was always very scared. I said, “Dang, I don’t know when she’s going to play last.”

“So to see her announce it and have people appreciate her legacy is really cool.”

Osaka and Williams faced each other four times when the 24-year-old won the 2018 US Open final 6-2, 6-4.

Williams can play in her last singles on Monday evening when she takes on the Montenegrin Danka Kovinic in the opening round of the US Open.
