The family of a craftsman who suffered serious head injuries in a horrific moped accident in Bali this morning turned off his life support, announcing that he had given the “gift of life” by donating his organs.
Shane Ramsey, 30, was visiting the Indonesian island for a wedding and was riding a moped in Seminyak on Sunday when he crashed into a roadside pole.
He was not wearing a helmet and had no travel insurance, which would have cost him only about $50 a week.
Mr Ramsey was rushed to hospital where he underwent brain surgery and has been in a coma ever since, racking up huge hospital bills.
His family paid $70,000 for him to undergo emergency neurological surgery and arranged a medical evacuation flight, which is believed to have cost around $150,000.
Mr Ramsey arrived in Perth at around 5pm on Thursday and was taken by ambulance to the intensive care unit at Royal Perth Hospital.
However, his mother, Catherine Ramsey, said she and her family were “devastated” after they decided to turn off his life support in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
“It was turned off at 3.18am when he was brought to theatre to give him the gift of life,” Ramsey told Daily Mail Australia.

His family turned off his ventilator at 3:18 a.m. Monday
Shane will reportedly donate all of his organs to people in dire need of a transplant.
Ms Ramsey previously told Daily Mail Australia that Ramsey had suffered three bleeds on the brain, which required surgery, and a fractured skull.
He was on his way with friends to watch a UFC fight when the accident happened.
His mother previously told Nine News she would sell the house to pay his medical bills if necessary.
“I just want to take him home, we’re in a strange country,” she said.
Doctors weren’t sure how extensive the damage to his brain was.
Mr. Ramsey had plans to buy a house when he returned home.

The young professional has been in hospital since Sunday and his family says they do not know the full extent of his injuries.
A GoFundMe was started last Monday to help pay for Mr. Ramsey’s medical bills and possible medical evacuation home.
At the time of publication, nearly $130,000 has been raised.
Mr. Ramsey had just completed a three-year apprenticeship and was looking to the future.
The carpenter’s former boss also took to Facebook on Monday to draw attention to the fundraiser.
He remembers running into his former student a few weeks ago.
“You forget how f***ing fragile life can be (and) how quickly everything can change,” he wrote.
