Shiv Sena neta arrested after son rams BMW into scooter, kills woman | India News – Times of India
MUMBAI: A 45-year-old woman, who was a pillion rider, was killed and her husband injured after a BMW, believed to be driven by a Shiv, overran the road. Sena The son of an official, Mihir Shah (24), hit their scooter Worli around 5:30 am on Sunday. Mihir, who had visited a bar on Saturday night, fled and the BMW was found with their family driver later in Bandra.
The impact was so great that Kaveri Nakhwa and her husband Pradip, fishermen from Worli Koliwada, landed on the bonnet of the car. “Pradip hit the windscreen and gestured to the driver to stop… but the driver did not stop,” said a Police source said. Pradip who fell first went looking for her and found her about 2 km away. He rushed her to the hospital where she was declared brought dead.
The crash caused a stir as it came less than two months after the Pune Porsche case. Mihir’s father Rajesh Shah, a Sena functionary from Palghar, and the family driver, Rishiraj Budwat who was sitting next to Mihir at the time of the crash, were arrested late on Sunday night for helping him flee.
Police have formed six police teams to track down Mihir. A notice has also been issued to prevent him from flying out of the country.
10 km away from accident site, police find BMW with driver of Neta family
The car was abandoned around 7 am in Kala Nagar, Bandra (East), about 10 km from the accident site. Police traced the car using GPS and found the Shah family’s driver, Rishiraj Budwat, with the car, while Mihir had fled. Police said Budwat was waiting for Shah Sr. When Rajesh Shah also reached the spot, police took both of them to Worli police station.
The car was impounded by police. A sticker on the windshield was damaged and the license plate on the back was missing when police found the vehicle.
His father told TOI that he did not know where his son was. He claimed that he came to know about the accident only after he started getting calls from people. The car is registered in the father’s name and the insurance had expired in May. Mihir, who studied till class 10, is in charge of his father’s building materials business.
Police are examining CCTV footage to confirm that Mihir was driving at the time of the accident. Mihir and the driver had left Shah’s Borivali home around midnight for a long drive. On Marine Drive, Mihir had asked the driver if he could drive the car, a police source said.
About the accident, police said the woman and her husband were returning on a scooter after buying fish from a wholesale market near Crawford Market. The couple was knocked down by the two-wheeler on Dr Annie Besant Road and both ended up on the bonnet of the car, police quoted the man as saying. The BMW started with the two still on the bonnet.
The woman was taken to Nair Hospital, Mumbai Central, where she was declared dead before being admitted. A case under various sections of the newly introduced Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, has been registered with Worli police station.
Sena (UBT) Aaditya Thackeray, MLA from Worli constituency, also visited the police station and met the woman’s husband and senior police officials, demanding strict action in the case. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said no one would be spared in the case and everyone would be treated equally before the law, irrespective of their position or party affiliation.
On Sunday, a team of traffic officials and another team of forensic experts visited the police station and examined the BMW.
