Shoppers rush to get their hands on flattering £20 supermarket dress, hailed as ‘stand-out piece’
The dress from A SUPERMARKET has been hailed as a “stand-out piece” that can be worn through summer and autumn – and it costs just £20.
Fashion fans were raving about the Sainsbury’s dress this week after spotting it on the racks.
The ‘Black Smudge Spot Crinkle Mesh Midaxi’ is available in sizes 8-24 and features a flattering ruffle detail.
Sainsbury’s bosses say: “Get a stylish look this summer with our black, sleeveless, spotty print dress.
“In a crinkled mesh fabric, available in a flattering midi length with pretty ruffles. Complete your outfit with a pair of black sandals.”
Katrina, creative stylist at Tu Clothing, also called the dress “gorgeous” and shared her thoughts on the supermarket’s current “must-have items.”
She said: “I absolutely love this column dress. Such a statement piece with a gorgeous print. Stack it with some gold jewellery and you’ve got your summer evening look sorted.
And shoppers seem to agree wholeheartedly, with one enthusiastically saying: “Just bought these from my local store. Tried on the skirt first and then found this.
“Very flattering. Great for a warm holiday or more autumn with a black leather jacket.”
“I enjoyed Tu this summer,” he said.
A third wrote: “Comfortable, fashionable and flattering. And a great price too. Love it.”
A fourth added: “I’m not one to dress up but when I saw this in the local shop I instantly fell in love with it.
“Beautiful, you can combine it with a blazer, but I love it with my denim jacket.”
Meanwhile, a fifth joined in the conversation: “Bought on impulse, but I like it. Fits well, great price too. Good for the holidays.”
But if you’re struggling to get your hands on the popular dress in your size, fashion expert Katrina has revealed her other favourites on the supermarket shelves.
She said: “These versatile pieces are the foundation of any wardrobe and are suitable for all seasons.”
Katrina was the first, like other fashion fans, to rave about a polo top with pointelle stitching and crochet details, available in black or cream.
The £20 top was previously praised as a “dream to wear”, with Katrina adding that it was “super easy to style and goes with almost anything”.
The fashion expert also recommended a “beautifully tailored” cream suit consisting of a £28 blazer and £16 trousers.
She looked elsewhere in the clothing department and tried on a light green crinkled dress costing £22.
She said: “Maxi skirts are a wardrobe essential and they are so easy to put on.
Is supermarket fashion the new high street?
DEPUTY Fashion Editor Abby McHale says:
Supermarkets have really upped their game when it comes to their fashion lines. These days, when you pop in to do your weekly shop, you can also pick up a selection of wallet-friendly, stylish items for the whole family.
Tesco has just announced a 0.7 percent rise in the quarter thanks to ‘strong growth in clothing’ and M&S has earned the title of the number one destination for womenswear on the high street.
Asda’s George clothing line earned the supermarket £1.5m in 2023, 80 per cent of clothes at Sainsbury’s were sold at full price rather than discounted, and sales of Nutmeg at Morrisons have also risen by 2 per cent over the past year.
How is it that supermarket fashion is so successful?
The clothing is not only affordable but also of good quality, and much of the clothing is part of programs such as the Better Cotton Initiative.
They often stick to classic pieces that they know will last for years.
And because they buy so much stock, they can deliver quickly and the volumes are cheaper.
“Combine with sneakers and a T-shirt for a polished daytime look or wear your favorite heel for the evening.”
She also called a pair of long-legged khaki chinos her “favorite summer pants” and raved about a wrap shirt that was a “new take on a classic.”
