Last month, M&S fans were left disappointed when the supermarket chain stopped offering an iconic treat.

The popular Colin the Caterpillar in a jar has recently disappeared from store shelves.

A keen-eyed fan spotted the Colin the Caterpillar cake in a jar disappearing from M&S stores.

She raised the issue with the company on X, formerly Twitter.

The post read: “Hi M&S, have you stopped doing Colin in a jar cakes?”

The business account responded saying, “Hi Emily, it looks like these are unfortunately no longer being produced. I’ve let our Food team know that you’d like to get them back in stock!”

The pot cakes hit supermarket shelves in 2021, with fans calling them “a little pot of joy.”

The treat consisted of layers of chocolate sponge cake, Belgian chocolate sauce and chocolate ganache, topped with a small White chocolate Colin face in a handy packaging.

Each pot sold for £4. Opinion among buyers at the time was divided.

But it’s not all doom and gloom as M&S has launched a host of new products.

A spokesperson said: “We are constantly evaluating, innovating and improving our range in the Foodhall. Last year we launched 1,250 new products and upgraded 1,000 products.

“This year we will launch 1,400 new products and upgrade another 1,000 products.”

Fans of ‘cake in a jar’ will be in heaven, as M&S has launched a new alternative snack – and it’s also available in a jar.

Colin the Caterpillar’s chocolate mousse is now available in supermarkets and offers a similarly chocolatey treat.

This sweet treat is served with a layer of rich chocolate sauce on the base, covered with airy chocolate mousse.

The dessert is also decorated with a white chocolate Colin face and chewy brownie pieces.

Colin the Caterpillar vs Cuthbert the Caterpillar

MARKS & Spencer has reached a truce with Aldi over the Colin the Caterpillar cake.

The upmarket supermarket and discount chain found themselves embroiled in a legal battle after Aldi started selling a cake called Cuthbert the Caterpillar, which bore a striking resemblance to the M&S creation.

It has now emerged that they reached a confidential agreement out of court on November 5.

The companies did not disclose terms of the settlement, but both cakes will still be sold.

An Aldi spokesperson said: “Cuthbert is free and looking forward to seeing all his fans again very soon!”

An M&S spokesperson said: “The purpose of the claim was to protect the intellectual property of our Colin the Caterpillar cake and we are very pleased with the outcome.”

The retailer began selling the famous Colin cake more than 30 years ago and the design has remained largely unchanged since 2004.

The only exception to this is seasonal events such as Halloween, Christmas and Easter, when M&S launches temporary new designs.

Colin is made with chocolate sponge and buttercream, covered with a chocolate layer, and costs £7.

Aldi launched its imitation Cuthbert cake in 2019 for £4.99.

Most supermarkets now have their own version of it, including Cecil from Waitrose, Charlie at the Co-op and Curly Cake from Tesco.

Colin the Caterpillar’s chocolate mousse is available at the till for just £2.

Some customers have already tasted this delicious treat and call it “the best”.

Someone wrote on Instagram: “There’s one problem with this: there’s not enough!

“M&S, please make a large version of this.”

Another added: “It really is a mousse that looks amazing.”
