‘Should be candid in her remarks’: Mother of RG Kar victim demands immediate action from Mamata Banerjee | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The mother of the victim in the tragic rape murder case bee RG Medical University and the hospital criticised West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for not being forthright enough in holding the perpetrators to account, especially given the destruction of evidence at the crime scene and the arrest of only one suspect.
Speaking from her home on the outskirts of Kolkata on Saturday, the victim’s mother urged Mamata to take a more direct and assertive stand, especially given the destruction of evidence at the crime scene and the arrest of only one suspect.
“Instead of just saying that whoever is found guilty would be punished, she should have been more categorical and direct. Considering the destruction of evidence at the crime scene and the arrest of only one person, we expected the CM to be more direct,” she said.
She also demanded the arrest of all persons involved in the crime and those who tried to cover it up. She also urged the government not to take punitive measures against the striking doctors who are advocating for justice and improvement hospital security.
However, the victim’s mother also expressed hope that dialogue between Mamata and the protesting doctors could lead to a solution. This comes after the protesting doctors agreed to hold talks with the Bengal Chief Minister following her unannounced visit to the protest site outside the state health department headquarters on Saturday afternoon.
Banerjee approached the doctors as their ‘didi’ (elder sister) rather than a politician. She assured them that she would assess their demands and take appropriate action if there were any irregularities.
The protesting doctors chanted “we want justice” while Mamata described her visit as a “last attempt” to resolve the situation.
The doctors have been protesting outside Swasthya Bhawan, the headquarters of the Health Ministry, since Tuesday, demanding better security at government hospitals and the dismissal of senior officials involved in the rape and murder case.
Previous attempts by the government to negotiate a solution have been unsuccessful. A planned meeting with the prime minister on Thursday was cancelled after the government refused to livestream the session, further escalating tensions between the parties.
