- Shoya Nakajima came off the bench on Saturday for his Antalyaspor debut
- His debut was cut short as he was sent off after just 20 seconds
- He didn’t get a single touch before jumping in with a sliding challenge
- His family was in the crowd, and his mother cried when he was sent away
Japan international Shoya Nakajima had a nightmare debut for Antalyaspor on Saturday when he was shown a red card just 20 seconds after coming off the bench.
Nakajima completed his move from Porto to Antaylaspor on a two-year contract earlier this month. With the Turkish side trailing 1-0 in their league match with Adana Demirspor, Nakajima was summoned by his manager and came on in the 59th minute to try to turn the game around in his team’s favour.
He was clearly eager to join in, and without even hitting anything, he slid in to try and win the ball back from the sideline.

He tried to get involved right away, but caught his opponent too late with his first tackle
The VAR showed his tackle was late and high and he was shown a red card by the referee
Failing to get hold of the ball, he left his opponent piled on the ground, with the referee immediately rushing at him to show him a yellow card.
It looked like Nakajima got away with his ugly challenge, but the referee was then advised by the VAR official to go and check the monitor on the pitch.
Replays showed that Nakajima’s tackle was late and he caught his opponent on the ankle with his studs, leaving the umpire with little choice but to change his decision and upgrade to a red card.
Nakajima initially greeted the decision with a smile, but then seemed in shock as his debut came to an abrupt end.
The 28-year-old’s family were in the crowd to watch him play, and they were stunned that everything had gone wrong for the attacker within seconds.
Nakajima went to check with his opponent, but this didn’t save him from being sent off
His family was devastated by the decision as his mother wiped away tears in the crowd
Nakajima’s mother was very upset and put a handkerchief on her face to wipe away the tears while the rest of his family looked on in disbelief.
Nakajima was actually the third player sent off that night. His team-mate Soner Aydogdu also got an early shower after being shown a red card in the eighth minute, while Adana Demirspor’s Yaroslav Rakitskyi got his marching orders six minutes before halftime.
After Nakajima’s resignation, the evening went from bad to worse for Antalyaspor as they conceded twice in the final 15 minutes en route to a 3-0 defeat.
Adana Demirspor now tops with 16 points after seven games, while Antalyaspor is in 13th place after losing five of their first seven games, and they will now have to do without the suspended Nakajima.
