Sikh factions rally behind Badal shooter and demand title for him

AMRITSAR: Panthic organizations, which are not aligned with Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), have united to oppose the demand for excommunication Narain Singh Chaurawho tried to assassinate SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal on December 4 Golden Temple.
The Panthic factions met here on Wednesday to discuss the sentiments of the Sikhs, the political situation in Punjab and the honor and dignity of religious places. The group is expected to announce their next move on Thursday.
It is learned that Panthic officials urged the acting Jathedar Akal TakhtBhai Dhian Singh Mand, to lead the movement and announce the conferment of the title “Panth Rattan” on Chaura, taking into account the wider sentiments of the Sikh community.
“Chaura’s action largely reflects the prevailing sentiment and the deep dismay and utter disappointment that the people of Punjab, especially the Sikhs, feel towards SAD,” said Bhai Jarnail Singh Sakhira, one of the officials present at the meeting . “Many believed that the SAD represented their interests, but over time the party became more focused on securing the future of a select few, promoting nepotism, while neglecting Panthic sentiments. This became clear when SAD officials themselves admitted that they had committed sins and mistakes during their tenure. People are increasingly outraged by the lenient sentences imposed on those responsible,” Sakhira added.
Meanwhile, Chaura’s son Baljinder Singh Bajwa said his father had met Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami on the day he tried to kill Sukhbir.
Chaura’s counsel JS Randhawa said the police have filed a petition that SGPC was not cooperating and had not yet provided CCTV footage.
He said the court remanded Chaura in police custody till December 14. Dhami did not respond to attempts to contact him to comment on the case.
