‘Situation like a stampede’: At least two dead, 130 injured during Jagannath Rath Yatra in Odisha | India News – Times of India


NEW DELHI: At least two people have been killed and nearly 130 injured during Jagannath Rath Yatra in Odishaofficials said Monday. The deaths occurred in two separate incidents on Yatra.
During the Rath Yatra in Puri on Sunday, a resident of Bolangir district reportedly died of asphyxiation in what appeared to be a stampede, a health official said.
“When we put him in the ambulance, his pulse was pounding. We took him to the hospital and gave him CPR. However, doctors declared him dead,” said Sushant Kumar Patnaik, an ambulance worker.
In another incident, police reported that a supporter was believed to have died after being run over by a chariot.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced an ex gratia of Rs 400,000 for the families of the deceased.
Finance Minister Suresh Pujari visited the injured in hospital on Sunday.
“One person has died, while many others have been admitted after suffering a heart attack. injuries in rushdehydration, dysentery and other reasons. No one is serious,” he said.
More than 600 people sought medical attention at hospitals and medical camps in Puri. However, Bijay Mohapatra, a health official, said only a little over 130 of them were admitted to hospitals.
“Such hospitalisation during Rath Yatra is normal. None of the injured are in a very serious condition. We are treating the injured devotees,” he said.
The Yatra resumed on Monday around 9.30 am despite tight security measures.
