Skincare pro reveals golden rules for anti-ageing – from 75p buy to fridge hack
A SKINCARE EXPERT has revealed her golden rules for anti-ageing that will leave you looking refreshed, rested and youthful – and a must-have purchase is just 75p
Fiona Ross, 33, is the founder of The Aesthetics Club, with clinics in Bearsden and Newton Mearns, both near Glasgow, and in London.
But the beautician shows that you don’t always have to spend a lot of money to get a perfect face.
Fiona, who founded The Aesthetics Club in 2018, believes in the importance of sticking to a routine, but she also knows that not everyone has the money to buy expensive products.
That’s why she’s sharing her best skincare tips for every budget, showing consumers what to do and what not to spend their hard-earned cash on when it comes to creams, serums, cleansers and more.
She said: “I think it’s important not to spend huge amounts of money on your cleanser and moisturiser.
“There are some really nice, budget-friendly products that aren’t too expensive.
“I would try to spend money on what we call ‘corrective products’ or ‘treatment products,’ which target concerns like acne, redness, dryness, etc.
“If you use products that specifically target those problems, you can slot them in among the less expensive options.”
Fiona is a huge advocate of affordable pampering at home.
“I really like doing an almond peel at home every two weeks and I like using a gua sha – it’s not to be underestimated if your face is feeling a little puffy. I use mine once or twice a week.”
And since Shein sells a gua sha for just 75p, it’s a very cost-effective way to care for your skin.
Fiona also emphasises the importance of a morning and evening routine: “In the morning I start with a cleanse using an exfoliating cleanser.
“I always recommend double cleansing at night because some makeup and SPF can be really hard to get off.
“Cleansing is very important because it is a day off for you. It will reduce congestion, blackheads and pimples.”
The expert realizes that no two faces are the same and that skin problems can vary depending on various circumstances. Age is one of the most important factors to take into account.
“As far as anti-aging advice goes, I would say avoid the sun, smoking, sugar and stress as much as possible.
“Sun and smoking are the two main causes, but sugar and stress can also cause many skin problems.
“In the meantime, for younger, oily skin, I would eliminate oil from your skincare routine entirely. Use oil-free products and opt for cleansers that help with oil production. If something has BHAs and AHAs in it, that will help.
“When someone’s skin can’t produce water, it produces more oil. Sometimes all they need is adequate hydration.”
Fiona has golden rules for anyone who wants to improve or protect their skin.
“Double cleanse your skin, apply SPF, refrigerate your eye care products, and apply the rest of the products to the back of your hands,” she said.
A special skin care treatment
For those willing to spend a few bucks on specialty, high-impact treatments, Fiona offers some suggestions that she believes are the most effective.
“I’m a big fan of the Lyma Laser,” she said.
“It is more effective than LED lighting at home. I do that every night if I think about it.”
And for that ‘deep clean’ feeling, Fiona always recommends a facial.
She added: “I don’t get as many facials as I would like. With Oxylight, I love that there are six steps and they really address a range of concerns.
“You get a good exfoliation but you’re not dry afterwards, you get a dewy skin but also a deep cleanse. It’s great if you have a special occasion like a wedding and you want that really radiant, sculpted hydrated skin.
“It’s something I’d like to do more often, but I can’t. The results are incredible.
“Also, the Moxi laser treatment is amazing, it completely transforms the skin. After the treatment you will experience dryness, but that only lasts for four to five days.
“It’s excellent if you’re looking for rejuvenation and a more advanced treatment. I think it’s great if you want the results but don’t have time for downtime in a busy schedule.”
Although these treatments can be pricey, Fiona is confident they save money in the long run.
She said: “If you invest more up front in treatments like moxi, you can save money in the long run because you are laying a good foundation for the quality of your skin.
“This can often mean that you will no longer need to undergo treatments in the future, such as injections, botox, fillers and skin-improving treatments.
“You’ve got that amazing waterfall going, you’re working on the quality of your skin and you don’t have to do anything else because the results can be so dramatic.”
Fiona has also brought Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Aniston’s latest treatments and skincare products to Scotland.
Her most recent move was the introduction of Oxylight, a six-step facial treatment to achieve a ‘filtered skin’ look, and Moxi, a laser that uses non-ablative skin resurfacing, at her Newton Mearns clinic.
The Aesthetics Club is also one of the few businesses in the country to offer Ameela facials, also known as “salmon sperm” facials.
Ameela is an injectable gel that consists of polynucleotides. These skin boosters work together with fibroblasts, the cells that produce collagen and elastin.
They hydrate, firm and contour and reduce free radical damage under the skin – one of the main causes of aging.
In Ameela, the polynucleotides are derived from salmon DNA.
Fiona calls the Ameela injections a “wonderful and powerful anti-aging solution”.
She added: “We will always strive to be at the forefront of technologies and modalities that provide the best evidence-based treatments.”
