Apple TV Plus renewed Slow horses for a fifth season in January 2024. And in October, an X/Twitter post from FilmUpdates revealed that production on Season 5 had already wrapped, just ten months after its renewal.
To support this, during an interview with Collider In early October, showrunner Will Smith said: “We’re almost done with Season 5. We still have a few days to wrap it up, but we’re already editing, so it’s coming. Don’t worry, it’s coming. Not as soon as you want, but it’s coming.”
When asked when it will be released, Smith replied: “I really don’t know when it will come out, but I can’t imagine Apple would want to leave it for more than a year after Season 4. So, the last one to come out would be the same slot next year, I’d say. And Apple certainly hasn’t let it go longer than a year so far.
Slow horses has shown off an impressive release schedule, with one season being dropped every year since 2022 – and seasons 1 and 2 even came out in the same year. So since season 5 has wrapped production and was reportedly being edited in October, we’d predict a release date of mid-to-late 2025.

That’s the only tantalizing glimpse I can give you of it.
Slow Horses season 5 possible plot synopsis and rumors
Major spoilers follow Slow horses seasons 1-4.
Slow horses Season 5 is confirmed to be an adaptation of Mick Herron’s novel ‘London Rules’, the sequel to ‘Spook Street’ that served as the basis for season 4.
To get a good idea of the possible plot for season 5, here is the official synopsis of the book: “Regent’s Park’s First Desk, Claude Whelan, learns this the hard way. Tasked with protecting a beleaguered Prime Minister, he is himself under attack from all sides: from the showboat MP who orchestrated the Brexit vote and now has his sights set on Number Ten; of the showboat’s wife, a gossip columnist, who crucifies Whelan in print; and especially of his own deputy, Lady Di Taverner, who is alert to Claude’s every stumble. Meanwhile, the country is rocked by a seemingly random series of terrorist attacks, and someone tries to kill Roddy Ho.
At Slough House, the crew struggles with personal problems: suppressed grief, various addictions, retail paralysis and the nagging suspicion that their newest colleague is a psychopath. But collectively, they are about to rediscover their greatest power: making a bad situation much, much worse. It’s good that Jackson Lamb knows the rules. Because those things don’t destroy themselves.”
From the season 5 trailer, we know that much of the show will stay true to the book. We also get a glimpse of most of the main cast to confirm their return to Slough House, and there’s an awkward kiss between River and Louisa that we’re excited to unpack.
Following on from the previous seasons, Slow horses always lasts six episodes, with the plot covering the events of two or three days. It looks like they’ll stick to this tried-and-true method in season 5, as Smith spoke to Collider: “You feel like if you go beyond that – I mean, you can inventing – I’m afraid it would feel like filler, and it would take you away from what’s so great about the books. So I think six is the magic number.”
In season 4, River met his biological father, Jack (Hugo Weaving), who only wanted to strengthen his relationship with Lamb. But what about more from Frank? Well, the man himself has spoken Forbesfurther confirming a return: “You probably know that Frank is in one of the other books, and so the assumption at the end of this season, and certainly for anyone who has read the books, is that Frank will come back.”
He adds: “Frank gets to play his Get Out of Jail Free card, which he’s had all along, because he knows MI5 and David Cartwright were trying to frame him. He knows he has it, so he can say that fantastic sentence: ‘I’ll take the next train.’ He can be that kind of character because he’s basically a survivor and he’s extremely slippery.”
With the book’s synopsis and teaser trailer as a starting point, it’s fair to say that the core plot is etched. But for those who haven’t read the books yet, and with the unique additions of the cast and crew: Slow horses will undoubtedly bring twists and turns that we didn’t see coming.
Will Slow Horses get more seasons on Apple TV Plus?
Slow horses has already been renewed for season 6, so yes, there is definitely more to come. As reported by Termseason 6 will be based on Mick Herron’s ‘Joe Country’ and ‘Slough House’, the sixth and seventh books in the series. Add: “In season 6, the spies go on the run as Diana Taverner embroils them all in a deadly high-stakes game of retaliation and revenge.”
While season 6 will draw its plot from two novels, only one remains in the series. Although, according to Smith speaking to Collider, Herron is working on book nine.
Furthermore, Smith adds that from his perspective there is interest in a spin-off: “I do think he wrote a great book, the last book that came out, which is in the Slough House universe, and Slow Horses is coming also. in it, that’s called The secret hours. That could be a movie or a more limited number just because of the nature of that story.
When asked about the possibilities for a Christmas special, Smith said: “Gary and Gisele [Schmidt]his wife, had a fantastic idea that I loved, which was a Slow horses advent calendar where we made 25 little videos, and you went in every day as an advent calendar, but you could make dots around the timeline.
So you could maybe do one where Min was still alive, and you could just go in and have these little vignettes. I also talked to Gary about, “What do you think Lamb’s Christmas is like, his real Christmas Day?” Where is he going?’ We think he probably goes to the pub alone. But that would be a great thing to do.” We didn’t have that Slow horses advent calendar on our bingo card for 2024, but we are definitely in favor of it.
