Smartphone shipments in India down 11 percent in Q3 2022: Counterpoint

India’s Smartphone Shipments Decline 11 Percent in Q3 2022; Xiaomi Leads With Highest Market Share: Counterpoint

Smartphone shipments in India declined 11 percent year-on-year in Q3 2022 to reach over 45 million units, according to the latest data from Counterpoint Research. Chinese electronics brand Xiaomi secured the top spot among other smartphone brands with a shipment share of 21 percent. Samsung followed Xiaomi closely behind at the second position with a market share of 18 percent. Vivo and Realme were ranked third and fourth respectively, closely followed by Oppo at the fifth position. Smartphone shipments in India in Q3 2022 also saw Apple achieve its highest-ever market share of 5 percent in the Indian market. The third quarter also marked the first time ever that an iPhone (iPhone 13) topped the overall quarterly smartphone shipment rankings of India.

Recent research by Counterpoint shows that smartphone shipments in India saw a decline Xiaomi grew 11 percent YoY in Q3 2022 to reach over 45 million units. Although Xiaomi’s YoY shipments fell 19 percent, the Chinese company managed to retain the top position with a market share of 21 percent. Xiaomi was also the top 5G smartphone brand in Q3 2022 in India in the sub-Rs. 20,000 price bracket.

South Korean electronics brand Samsung came in second in the quarter with an 18 percent market share. Samsung was the top smartphone brand in India in September. The company also led the Rs. 10,000-Rs. 20,000 price band, which was mainly driven by the Galaxy M-series and F-series models. Samsung was also the fastest growing brand among the top five brands in the premium segment.

As mentioned earlier, Vivo secured the third position while Realme finished at the fourth spot in Q3 2022. Chinese tech company Oppo was at the fifth position, although it was down 7 percent year-on-year in Q3 2022.

This quarter, US tech giant Apple also achieved its highest ever Indian shipment share of 5 percent. The iPhone 13 became the first iPhone to surpass total phone shipments in India in a quarter.
