Snapchat’s My AI is now powered by Gemini, brings new features
Snapchat has partnered with Google Cloud to bring the capabilities of its Gemini artificial intelligence (AI) model to My AI. The strategic partnership, announced Tuesday, has allowed the social media platform to add computer vision capabilities and improve its ability to process text, audio and code. According to the Mountain View-based tech giant, Snapchat’s My AI uses Gemini AI models available on Vertex AI. Interestingly, the media-focused social media platform also launched on Google Cloud in 2011.
Snapchat’s My AI is Powered by Gemini
In a press releaseGoogle Cloud explained the details of the partnership. While the announcement comes now, Gemini’s integration with My AI was made earlier this year. The tech giant highlighted that Snapchat’s AI chatbot is one of the largest consumer chatbots currently available to users.
With this integration, My AI will not only gain basic generative AI capabilities, but also enhanced capabilities for processing text, audio, images, video, and code. This means that users can send an audio file or an image to the AI and ask it questions about it. In a video, Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel highlighted that users can send the chatbot an image of different snacks and ask it to identify the healthiest option.
In real-world scenarios, users can also use this capability to have the chatbot translate a street sign when traveling abroad. Similarly, it can also respond to questions from a video file.
Currently, all Snapchat users can use My AI, but Plus subscribers have access to a number of additional features, such as image generation and AI-powered editing. Google claims that since Gemini began powering My AI, the platform has seen a 2.5x increase in engagement in the US. Notably, prior to Gemini, the chatbot was powered by OpenAI’s GPT models.
During the digital event Gemini at Work, Google Cloud also presented on display Other new customers who have onboarded their AI models to create new experiences include Volkswagen US, Warner Bros. Discovery, Bell Canada, Best Buy, Telecom Italia and more.
