Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipset may not offer significant CPU improvements
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipset will be Qualcomm’s next-generation flagship mobile platform when it launches in October. Ahead of the launch, several reports have hinted at the possible improvements that the chipset could be getting. A new leak now claims that the chip could offer significant GPU power efficiency, but the CPU performance might not meet consumers’ expectations. Notably, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipset is reportedly built on a 3nm process technology from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).
Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 SoC not expected to deliver significant CPU performance gains
In a after On X (formerly known as Twitter), a leak aggregator who goes by the username @negativeonehero posted a screenshot of a Weibo post from a Chinese tipster. Summarizing the tipster’s information, the X user said, “Looking at the internal test data of 8G4, the improvement of CPU efficiency is in the single percentage, but the improvement of GPU is huge, D9300 peak at half power is possible.”
In the original report, the tipster claimed to have seen the internal benchmark and power consumption data of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipset. Based on this, the Adreno 750 GPU that is expected to be integrated inside the SoC is said to get a significant boost. The tipster claims that it could demonstrate similar GPU performance as MediaTek’s Dimensity 9300 chipset, albeit at half the power consumption.
There is a downside, too. According to the tipster, the chipset’s CPU performance is disappointing, showing only a single-digit improvement over its predecessor. However, the post doesn’t share any benchmark numbers that would highlight the upgrade. So it seems like the chipset is focusing on GPU efficiency rather than CPU performance.
However, it must be noted that these are just rumors and since none of the information has come from official sources, it should be taken with a grain of salt. The chipmaker has only confirmed that the upcoming flagship mobile platform will use its own Oryon CPU and will feature a dedicated neural processing unit (NPU). More information will be available only once Snapdragon officially announces the 8 Gen 4 chipset during its October event.
