‘I’m really glad it’s not in cash’: the down-to-earth Iga Swiatek’s hilarious response after she got her $2.6 million winnings in an envelope after lifting the US Open trophy in New York

Iga Swiatek joked that she was “very happy” that her US Open winnings of $2.6 million were not in cash, after she was surprised to be handed an envelope with her prize after lifting the trophy on Saturday night.

Poland’s No. 1 in the world was way too good for her opponent Ons Jabeur in New York, winning in straight sets, and there was a party atmosphere within Arthur Ashe as fans celebrated her dazzling win.

After lifting the trophy, Swiatek seemed surprised to receive an envelope with a check for $2.6 million, joking, “Thank you. I’m really glad it’s not in cash.’

Both the men and the women at the US Open will receive the same prize money in the singles, with Carlos Alcaraz or Casper Ruud receiving the same envelope after their match on Sunday.

Saturday’s loser in the final, Jabeur, will still take home a cool $1.3 million for reaching the Arthur Ashe showpiece.

Meanwhile, Poland’s Swiatek appeared in shock after taking her third Grand Slam title, and first in New York after two previous successes in France.

“I just don’t expect much, especially for this tournament it was such a challenging time. Coming back after winning a grand slam is always difficult,” she said.

“This tournament was definitely a challenge. It’s New York, it’s so loud, so crazy. I’m so proud that I could handle it mentally.’

The Pole turned to Jabeur and said: ‘I know this is already a nice rivalry. I’m pretty sure we’ll have many more and you’ll win a few, so don’t worry.’

A repentant-looking Jabeur said, “I want to thank the crowd for cheering me up. I really tried, but Iga didn’t make it easy for me. She deserved the win today. I don’t like her that much right now, but it’s okay.

“A great two weeks, backing up my Wimbledon final. I’ll keep working hard and we’ll get that title soon.

“I try to push myself to do more. Hopefully I can inspire more and more generations. This is just the beginning of so many things.’
