Social Security September 2024: Second round of payments coming soon
The first round of Social Security payments for September 2024 has already been sent out, and the second round will go out in a few days. If you’re not sure when you should receive your check, we’ve got you covered. Below, you’ll find the full payment schedule for September 2024, as well as some questions you may have about your benefit payments. If you’re still waiting for your August check, learn what to do if your Social Security payment is missing.
Although the Social Security Administration sends out checks monthly and your check arrives at the same time each month, not everyone receives their checks on the same day.
Instead, Social Security checks are scheduled based on the date of the month you were born and when you first started receiving benefits.
Read on to find out if you can expect your check this week, how your payment date is determined by the Social Security Administration, and other government payment dates. For more information, read how to file for Social Security benefits, and what experts predict the 2025 COLA will be.
When will I receive my Social Security benefits?
Want to know what day of the month you’ll receive your check? Here’s the Social Security and SSDI payment schedule for September.
Social Security Payment Schedule September 2024
You received social security before May 1997 | September 3 |
---|---|
If your birthday falls between the 1st and the 10th of a given month | September 11 |
If your birthday falls between the 11th and 20th of a given month | September 18 |
If your birthday falls between the 21st and 31st of a given month | September 25 |
How is the date of my social security payment determined?
Social Security payments are usually paid beginning on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. The remaining two payments are paid on the following two Wednesdays of the month. Which week you receive your payment depends on your date of birth. There is one major exception, which I will discuss below.
Date of birth between: | Date of social security check |
---|---|
1st and the 10th | 2nd Wednesday of the month |
11th and the 20th | 3rd Wednesday of the month |
21st and 31st | 4th Wednesday of the month |
Will I receive my other government benefits on the same day?
If you received Social Security benefits before May 1997, or receive both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income, your payment schedule is not determined by your date of birth. Instead, payments are paid on the same date each month, with a few exceptions that I’ll explain below.
Social Security payments are sent on the 3rd of each month, while SSI payments are sent on the 1st of each month. These dates sometimes change if the 1st or 3rd of the month falls on a weekend or holiday. For example, March 3rd fell on a weekend, so Social Security recipients received their March payments two days early, on March 1st. The same thing happens in the month of November.
The only benefits paid on the same schedule are Social Security and Social Security Disability Insurance.

If your check doesn’t arrive on time or at all, the Social Security Administration recommends waiting three additional mailing days before contacting them. After that, you can call the national toll-free number: 1-800-772-1213
The SSA notes that “wait times to speak with a representative are typically shorter in the morning, later in the week, and later in the month.”
If you have trouble reaching the SSA using the national number, you can contact their office locator to find a local office to contact.
