Sony may be testing the waters with the PS5 Pro’s price, as analysts estimate the PS6 will cost around $600
According to some gaming industry analysts, the PS6’s price could reach or even exceed the $600 mark.
In a chat with GamesBeatAccording to Mat Piscatella, a trusted analyst at Circana, “higher prices will likely play a role” in the PS6, suggesting a slowdown in organic console hardware sales growth in the U.S.
“I expect prices of new console hardware to continue to rise,” Piscatella added. “We’ve now seen (a bit radioactively after the PS3 price announcement back then) that $599 threshold has been reached or broken by both PlayStation and Xbox, so I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if we see that again.”
Midia Research’s Rhys Elliot expects a similar price change, citing the PS5 Pro’s controversial $699.99 price tag. “I expect the PS6 and Xbox next-gen consoles to retail for at least $600,” Elliot said. “PlayStation is clearly testing the waters with its PS5 Pro pricing.”
Niko Partners’ Daniel Ahmad also weighed in, stating that PS5 Pro is “targeted at a price-insensitive audience,” adding that: “console manufacturers have still taken steps to ensure they have a cheaper entry point. This is the Switch Lite for Nintendo, the Series S for Xbox, and the PS5 Digital Edition for Sony. However, what we’ve seen generally this generation is that these models haven’t received permanent price cuts.”
Ahmad also said that Niko Partners estimates the PS5 Pro will sell 10 million units over its lifetime, which would represent about 10% of total PS5 sales. Like PSVR 2, the mid-gen upgrade may find some traction among enthusiasts seeking the very best console image quality, but its widespread appeal will be limited compared to the more affordable PS5 models.
