Southampton have confirmed the arrival of Spanish defender Juan Larios from Manchester City.

The 18-year-old has signed a five-year contract with St Mary’s after leaving Manchester, where he was a regular at City’s Elite Development Squad in Premier League 2.

He will be their fourth summer signing of the Premier League champions, after Gavin Bazunu, Romeo Lavia and Samuel Edozie.

Larios told the club’s website: ‘I am so happy to be here in Southampton. I’m really looking forward to starting the team.

“I like the philosophy of the club, to develop young players and to trust them. I spoke to the manager and the club and they showed me how brave they are. They told me they believe in me for now and for the future.’

Larios was on the Sevilla books before moving to Barcelona in 2016 at the age of 12, where he stayed for four years before joining City.

Southampton manager Hasenhuttl said of the new signing: “Juan is a talented young player who has shown he has the technical qualities and personality to improve our team.

“This is a positive step in continuing our way of attracting young and hungry players who want to get better with us.

“We hope to be able to give Juan the opportunity to play Premier League football, and his adaptability to be able to play in different positions can certainly help us this season and in the future.”

Larios became Southampton’s third deadline day signing after the arrival of City team-mate Samuel Edozie and Arsenal player Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

The deal for Edozie, who looked certain to break into Pep Guardiola’s squad last season before being injured, is worth up to £10million.

While Maitland-Niles has secured a move to the south coast in a lease with an option to buy for Southampton, while Arsenal are looking to relocate unwanted talent.
