Southern Expressway crash: Adelaide’s grandfather killed in horror car pile-up

Many tributes have been poured in for a much-loved grandfather who was killed in a horrific multi-vehicle crash. His loved ones are ‘stunned’.

John Iordanis, 58, was driving his green Ford Falcon when the vehicle collided with three other cars and a truck on the Southern Expressway in Adelaide’s south about 4.50pm on Friday.

Christies Beach’s grandfather died at the scene. He was only five miles from home.

Friends and family are shocked by the death of their beloved father, grandfather and colleague.

His stepdaughter Natalie Chown told Daily Mail Australia he was a loving and caring person.

“We can’t express how sad we are,” she said.

Mrs Chown added on Facebook: “You have been there through all the ups and downs in life. Our hearts are broken that you were taken so soon.”

Others remembered Mr. Iordanis as a friendly man who was full of life.

“I will miss your mischievous smile, our conversations and our jokes,” one person wrote.

“One of the best people I ever knew, always loved a laugh. Devastated when I heard the news,” wrote another.

Judy Pearson, who knew and worked with Mr Iordanis for 25 years, said she was still coming to terms with the tragedy.

“I was so shocked when I got the call last night,” she wrote.

‘[I] laughed a lot with you. You will be missed by so many people at work. I still can’t believe it.’

Police are investigating whether Mr Iordanis had a medical episode before the crash and whether this could have been a factor: 7 News reported.

The drivers of the three other vehicles (pictured) and the truck were taken to hospital where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

A spokesperson for South Australia Police told Daily Mail Australia that no further updates were available while the investigation was ongoing.

The Southern Expressway and Main South Road near Huntfield Heights were closed for several hours before the highway was reopened.

Mr Iordanis was the 44th victim to die on South Australian roads this year.
