A Spanish actor and his wife have been arrested and charged with poisoning her aunt to seize an early inheritance.

Spanish actor Luis Lorenzo Crespo, 61, was arrested near Madrid on May 27 with his wife Arancha Palomino, 37, for the murder of 85-year-old Aunt María Isabel in June 2021.

The duo invited Aunt Isabel to stay with them and used heavy metals to poison her, police said.

Officers went to Lorenzo’s house after he confirmed she was living with them, as relatives hadn’t heard from her for days.

The elderly woman had somehow spent large amounts of money leading up to her death, police found.

She had apparently updated her will to leave her entire estate to her niece just months before she died.

Homicide detectives found bundles of 100, 50 and 20 euro bills hidden among clothing and in plastic bags when police searched their address, amounting to at least 142,000 euro in total.

The investigation also revealed that the couple had around €50,000 in their bank account, as well as the cash.

The aunt was originally thought to have died of natural causes from dementia last year, but her suspicious brother requested a second autopsy, which revealed she had been poisoned.

The autopsy findings revealed on May 31 that Isabel had 200 times the normal level of cadmium and 20 times the normal level of manganese in her body.

The metals are present in dyes, batteries and fungicides, and are also present in industrialized areas.

The report suggests the elderly woman must have ingested the toxic metals.

Lorenzo’s attorney Francisco Perez said the elderly woman was poisoned after eating fish high in mercury.

The couple said they cared for the elderly woman and took her to specialists after her dementia diagnosis in an attempt to explain the expenses.

But the Guardia Civil said there was no diagnosis of dementia, while neighbors claimed the couple neglected her.

The Spanish actor has appeared in such shows as ‘El Comisario’, a gritty police drama and the comedy ‘La Que se Avecina’.
