Squadron Leader Mohana Singh is the first woman fighter pilot in the LCA Tejas fighter aircraft fleet | India News – Times of India

JODHPUR: Squadron Leader Mohana Singh has become the first female fighter pilot to join the elite 18 ‘Flying Bullets’ squadron, which flies India’s indigenous ‘Made in India’ aircraft LCA Tejas squadron of fighter jets.
Singh, one of the country’s first female fighter pilots, has once again broken glass ceilings. Her remarkable achievement underscores the Indian Air Force’s commitment to gender equality and empowerment.
The officer was part of the recent exercise, ‘Tarang Shakti‘ in Jodhpur, where she was part of the historic flight of three vice-chiefs of the three armed forces.
Sqn Ldr Mohana Singh was among the first group of three women to become fighter pilots in the Indian Air Force.
Mohana Singh’s other two female compatriots, Sqn Ldr Bhawna Kanth and Sqn Ldr Avni Chaturvedi, are now flying the Su-30 MKI fighter jets in the western desert.
Until recently she flew the MiG-21s and was recently transferred to the LCA squadron at Naliya air base in the Gujarat area, along the border with Pakistan.
During the historic flight, Sqn Ldr Mohana was seen briefing the Army and Navy Vice Chiefs about the flight in the LCA Tejas fighter aircraft and helping them with the preparations.
Indian Air Force Vice-Commander Air Marshal Amar Preet Singh flew solo in the LCA Tejas fighter aircraft variant, while the other two Vice-Commanders, Lieutenant General NS Raja Subra and Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, flew the training aircraft variants with two fighter pilots.
This exercise was seen as one of the key messages from the armed forces to collectively support Make in India.
The flight also took place in the LCA Tejas, when the world’s top air forces including the US, Greece, Sri Lanka, Australia and many other countries with their advanced fighter jets participated in the multinational exercise at the Jodhpur Air Base.
The IAF has about 20 female fighter pilots after the government opened fighter pilot training to women in 2016.
