St George Illawarra captain Ben Hunt says he has no interest in leaving the club despite a standoff with the Dragons over a contract extension.

The halfback was arguably in his best form in 2022 in a struggling Dragons side, but has yet to put a new deal on paper.

Hunt can talk to rival clubs about his destiny in 2024 from November 1 and with a lack of good halfbacks or hookers – a position he played in this year for the Queensland State of Origin side – the 32-year-old is likely to be a hot asset.

The Dolphins, Canterbury and Gold Coast have all been mentioned as possible destinations for the Maroons star.

But after Sunday’s 24-22 win over Wests Tigers, Hunt insisted there was only one place he wanted to play.

“Every day something seems to pop up,” he said.

“I’m just waiting for the season to be over and I only have a week left. We’ll fix it and work on it. I enjoy the club and am happy to stay.’

Hunt will turn 34 as the 2024 season approaches, but he seemed to be worth every penny of his $1.2 million contract.

The Dragons insist their offers are in line with his value, although the knock-on effect of Hunt’s stay could lead to highly regarded playmaker Jayden Sullivan leaving the club.

Sullivan, 20, played hooker against the Tigers and there is a school of thought that he and Hunt are best suited to switch roles in 2023.

Hunt has only played in the final once during his five-year stay with Dragons and there are reports that he wants clarity on coach Anthony Griffin’s future before making a decision.

The pair are close and there is division with Dragon Camp, something Griffin denied on Sunday.

“I have no idea,” Griffin said after the morale-boosting victory.

‘Last week was a good week and although today was not nice; winning gives you pleasure and faith.’
