Students protest violence in Manipur, call for resignation of DGP, security advisor – Times of India
NEW DELHI: A large group of students took to the streets in Manipur’s Imphal to protest the recent escalation of violence in the state and demanded the resignation of the DGP and the security advisor. The students condemned the indiscriminate use of drone bombs and rocket attacks by extremist organisations.
The protest came a day after Chief Minister N Biren Singh along with 18 MPs held a meeting with Governor L Acharya amid the recent outbreak of violence.
In response, security forces have been deployed anti-drone systems in the fringe areas of Manipur to counter possible threats from rogue drones. In addition, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is bringing in more anti-drone weapons to beef up security measures in the state.
“The AR has deployed several anti-drone systems in the border areas of the state to ward off all unwanted drones. The CRPF has also tested an anti-drone system and supplied it to the troops deployed in the state. The CRPF will soon bring more anti-drone weapons to the state,” Manipur police said in a message on X.
Meanwhile, the Coordinating Committee for Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), headed by Khuraijam Athouba, has declared an indefinite state of emergency, citing increased Kuki aggression in the region as the reason.
Earlier, at least five people were killed in a gunfight between groups belonging to two communities in Jiribam district of Manipur. A security source said several others were injured and the casualty count could rise.
On Friday, suspected militants launched rocket attacks on the residence of Manipur’s Chief Minister Mairembam Koireng, killing one person and wounding six others.
Security forces responded by destroying three bunkers in neighbouring Churachandpur district and an air patrol was carried out using a military helicopter.
