Study touts roadmap for 71% reduction in transport emissions | India News – Times of India
NEW DELHI: India can achieve a 71% reduction in carbon emissions from the transport sector by 2050 by implementing three ambitious strategies — electrification, improving fuel efficiency standards and switching to public transport for passengers and railways for freight, according to a study by World Resource Institute.
India’s transport sector accounted for 14% of total energy-related carbon emissions in 2020. The report released on Wednesday said there is a need for a roadmap for emission reduction and targets for the transport sector to achieve the net zero target in 2070.
The study arrived at the estimates using India Energy Policy Simulator (EPS), an open-source system dynamics model that allows users to develop scenarios for different time frames, such as 2030, 2040 and 2050, for reducing carbon emissions and reducing energy consumption. “Implementing additional policies with a carbon free electricity “The target of 75% of electricity coming from renewable sources results in a 75% reduction in 2050 compared to BAU values,” the report said.
