Super stretchy OLED for automotive and textiles debuts in South Korea

LG Display, the screen manufacturer of the Korean electronics giant, has unveiled a new flexible OLED screen that can stretch up to 50% and attach to irregular surfaces such as fabric.

The 12-inch prototype screen stretches up to 18 inches and has red, green and blue pixels at a density of 100 pixels per inch. That is not very high: for comparison: a smartphone usually has between 300 and 500 ppi.

The company says the new display features both contact lens technology and a micro-LED light source repeatedly stretched more than 10,000 timesthe company said.

LG Display debuted a stretchy OLED in September at Seoul Fashion Week, but it’s unclear if it’s the same one. The company did not immediately respond to CNET’s request for clarification.

We don’t expect to see these screens on TVs. Instead, LG Display proposed applications including convex touchscreens for cars or wearable displays attached to uniforms to provide real-time information.
