About 500 people have been evacuated after a small fire broke out in a rubbish chute at one of Sydney’s tallest residential towers.

The New South Wales Fire Brigade was called to the Greenland Centre building on Bathurst Street at around 12pm on Tuesday afternoon.

Several small fires are said to have broken out in the waste chute and in the rubbish bins in the basement.

Eighteen fire engines and 72 firefighters were on the scene. Police and paramedics also arrived.

The Greenland Centre Building is 235 metres high and consists of more than 450 apartments.

More coming soon.
