Sydney weather warning: Warning of power outages across the state
A heatwave has hit the east coast, which will last for days and bring temperatures of almost 40 degrees Celsius – with warnings of an increased risk of power outages.
On Monday, the Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe heatwave warning for eastern parts of NSW.
Sydney is gearing up for back-to-back sweltering days, with temperatures in the city’s west reaching 35 degrees Celsius on Monday and 38 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.
The heat will be at its worst on Wednesday, with temperatures expected to reach 39 degrees Celsius.
These unusually warm days are 6 to 10 degrees Celsius higher than the typical seasonal average.
The most popular towns and suburbs are Batemans Bay, Bowral, Camden, Campbelltown, Hornsby, Liverpool, Nowra, Penrith, Parramatta and Richmond.
Other areas in the state expected to be affected include the Hunter region, Illawarra, South Coast and Southern Tablelands.
Australia’s energy market operator warned of possible power outages on Tuesday afternoon as electricity demand rises due to the widespread use of air conditioners in response to the heat.
Compounding the problem, at least one generating unit in three of New South Wales’ four coal-fired power stations is currently offline for maintenance or repairs.
Sydney is preparing for a heatwave that will last from Monday to Wednesday
Temperatures will remain above 35 degrees Celsius for much of the time in parts of NSW
“High temperatures and strong electricity demand, combined with some generation outages, mean tight forecasts for electricity supply in NSW tomorrow and Wednesday afternoon,” an AEMO spokesperson said.
‘AEMO also predicts tight electricity reserves in Queensland on Wednesday.’
Meanwhile, those living in Victoria and the ACT may also notice days getting warmer as the heatwave moves south towards the end of the week.
The Bureau warned anyone living in the affected areas to seek shelter and stay safe.
“Severe heat waves can be dangerous for many people, especially the elderly, infants, children, pregnant and lactating women, people with medical conditions and those who are unwell,” a spokesperson said.
‘Find a place to stay cool, such as your home, a library, community center or shopping centre.
‘Close your windows and draw blinds, curtains or awnings early in the day to keep the heat out of your home.
“If available, use fans or air conditioners to stay cool.”
Rain will replace the heat from Thursday, with both Victoria and NSW expected to be swamped by showers this weekend.
