Former President Donald J. Trump the Supreme Court urged Tuesday to rule that he is absolutely immune from criminal charges stemming from his efforts to undermine the 2020 election.

“The President cannot function, and the Presidency itself cannot maintain its vital independence,” the letter said, “if the President faces criminal charges for official acts as soon as he leaves office.”

The letter, Trump’s most significant submission to the justices before the case is heard on April 25, continued to push for an expansive understanding of presidential immunity, an understanding that the report said was required by the structure of the Constitution itself.

“The issue of a former president’s criminal immunity raises serious constitutional questions that go to the heart of the separation of powers,” the letter said.

Legal experts said Trump was unlikely to prevail, but added that how and when the court rejects his arguments will essentially determine if and when Trump’s trial, which had been scheduled to begin on March 4, will continue.

When the Supreme Court agreed to hear the case last month, it set a so-called accelerated timetable. But it did not move particularly quickly and culminated in oral arguments some seven weeks later, on April 25. That delay marked an important partial victory for Mr. Trump.

Even if the court were to then move with considerable speed and issue a categorical decision against Mr. Trump within a month, the trial would most likely not begin until the fall, well into the heart of the presidential campaign. If the court does not rule until the end of June or sends the case back to the lower courts for further investigation into the scope of any immunity, the trial cannot take place until after the elections.

If Mr. Trump wins the election, he could order the Justice Department to drop the charges.

When the Supreme Court agreed to hear the case, it said it would decide this question: “Whether, and if so, to what extent a former president enjoys presidential immunity from criminal prosecution for conduct incidental to official acts while in office to go.”

That sentence has been scrutinized. On the one hand, Mr. Trump’s argument that his acquittal at his second impeachment trial, on charges of incitement of insurrection, blocked any prosecution on similar charges appeared to be ignored. (Fifty-seven senators voted against him, ten short of the two-thirds majority needed to convict.)

On the other hand, it seemed to leave open the possibility that the court would distinguish – or ask lower courts to do so – between official acts and private acts.

Mr. Trump was sharply critical of a ruling by a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, which unanimously rejected his argument that he might not be prosecuted for actions he took while in office.

The appeals court panel, made up of one Republican and two Democratic appointees, said Trump has become an ordinary citizen in the eyes of the criminal law after leaving office.

“For the purposes of this criminal case, former President Trump has become citizen Trump, with all the defenses of any other criminal defendant,” the panel wrote. “But any executive branch immunity that may have protected him while he was president no longer protects him from this prosecution.”

When the case was argued before the appeals court, a lawyer for Mr. Trump argued that former presidents are absolutely immune from prosecution, even for assassinations they ordered while in office.

In the new letter, Mr. Trump’s lawyers said the court should be wary of approving prosecutions of former presidents. “Criminal prosecutions pose a deadly threat to the independence of the presidency,” they wrote, adding that a contrary ruling could lead to the prosecution of President Biden.

“Is President Biden destroying our southern border and undermining our national security abroad for unlawful election purposes?” the boy asked.

Jack Smith, the special counsel who prosecuted Mr. Trump, elaborated on his arguments a short filed at an earlier stage of the proceedings, citing its attempts to undermine democracy.

If Trump’s “radical claim were accepted,” Smith wrote, “it would upend the understanding of presidential responsibility that has prevailed throughout history while undermining democracy and the rule of law—especially when, as here, a former president would be accused of committing crimes to remain in power despite losing an election, thereby attempting to undermine constitutional procedures for the transfer of power and disenfranchising millions of voters.”

Mr. Smith added that there is no reason to fear prosecutions that would prevent other presidents from taking decisive action.

“That dystopian vision runs counter to the checks and balances built into our institutions and the framework of the Constitution,” Mr. Smith wrote.

Louis Thornton-Allan, the estranged husband of late actor Paul Walker’s daughter Meadow Walker, has asked a court for spousal support in their ongoing divorce.

Thornton-Allan, 26, cited the “signed premarital agreement” in a request for support in response to an official divorce filing. Meadow, 25, arrived on February 15 Radaronline This was reported on Tuesday after reviewing court documents.

Meadow made a request in her filing last month that Thornton-Allan not receive spousal support, which Thornton-Allan objected to in his legal papers.

Thornton-Allan has not disputed the date of separation mentioned by Meadow, namely January 3, 2024.

The latest development in the split came less than three months after Meadow announced late last year that she and Thornton-Allan had split after three years of marriage. Meadow was spotted in Paris earlier this month with English model Kit Butler, 25.

“After three wonderful years of marriage, we have come to an agreement to amicably separate,” Walker shared in a statement uploaded to Instagram on December 28.

She added: ‘This is truly a joint decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy. We maintain mutual love and respect for each other, and will continue to support each other.”

Meadow and her husband got engaged in August 2021 and married three months later in October in the Dominican Republic.

Meadow took over her father’s charity, the Paul Walker Foundation, which also provides grants to marine biologists.

On Christmas Day, Meadow shared a black-and-white throwback photo with her dad of them wandering around a hotel.

‘Sending my love to everyone! This is a difficult time of year for many. Talk to your loved ones and tell them you love them. Tomorrow is not promised,” she captioned the image.

Meadow and Thornton-Allan kicked off 2023 with a trip to Lech am Arlberg, Austria, before flying to Rome in May for the premiere of Fast X: Road To Rome, held at the Colosseum in Rome, Italy.

The year before, they spent their first year of marriage traveling around the country, including getaways to Miami and New York.

In October 2022, photos obtained by DailyMail.com showed the star sobbing as she walked away from Thornton-Allan during a date at a New York City restaurant.

While it’s unclear what led to her emotional outburst, the cover girl was seen breaking down in tears at the table before walking away from her husband.

On average it happens a few times a month. I dream about someone and something happens to him or her, and a few days or weeks later I discover that the scenario in my dream has happened in real life. It’s always been that way.

One night, when I was 19, I dreamed that my grandmother was reborn as a baby, but with her aged head. I woke up when my college landline rang, went there, and heard my father tell me that my grandmother had died that night.

Then there was the time I dreamed of a tower with bodies falling out of them in graphic detail. A few days later the World Trade Center tragedy occurred.

I dreamed of my father lying quietly in a contraption in a wall. That year he began radiotherapy for the cancer that took his life.

And on the morning of his death, in 2005, I had the strange feeling that everything ‘stopped’ and that I was not allowed to get the train to work. He died that morning.

So I’ve always felt a bit clairvoyant. But often I ignore my dreams or feelings, or I forget them. Like the time I dreamed that I didn’t have to walk a path. The next morning I went for a walk and saw this trail I had dreamed of. I ignored my intuition and walked over, only to be stared at by a man in the bushes.

So what good is a little nugget of psychic abilities if I don’t listen to it or interpret it correctly? And can someone like me be ‘trained’ to become better at it?

I contacted the famous clairvoyant Inbaal Honigman. Inbaal has been psychic all her life and has been doing tarot readings since she was twenty. She appeared on Big Brother as the reality TV show’s psychic to see who would be voted out. Now she teaches courses to help psychics improve their skills.

I’ve always felt a bit psychic, writes Julie Cook

Our first session starts with a Zoom call. Inbaal is bubbly, friendly, personable and tells me that everyone has the ability to be psychic, but they should cherish it.

“Even people without that little ounce of talent can train to become a certain kind of psychic,” she says.

She tells me it would be good to start keeping a dream journal and buy a deck of tarot cards to “introduce yourself leisurely to the world of symbolism.” She also recommends crystals “to achieve greater clarity”: a clear quartz and one of obsidian. Clear quartz is “great for healing and great for sleep,” she adds.

‘Black crystals such as obsidian absorb negativity and keep your thoughts clear. They help defend you against people who come to suck you dry.’

Inbaal recommends that I choose a Tarot card of the day and place it next to my bed, to see if that can form a ‘bridge’ between my dreams and my understanding.

I choose the Six of Cups, with a boy giving flowers to a girl, on a beautiful square with a barracks behind it.

I sleep, but wake up with no memory of dreams.

“If you look closely,” says Inbaal, “there is an adult walking away in the background of the card. This can mean a happy childhood because adults let the children be children, but conversely it can also mean that there are no adults around.’

I don’t think much about my childhood. Money problems, recessions, job losses, unhappily married parents and then my father’s cancer devastated my younger years and so it is uncanny that my subconscious chooses not to respond to this card.

Julie was on holiday with her father in the south of Britain when she was three. He died in 2005

Julie was on holiday with her father in the south of Britain when she was three. He died in 2005

Another night I put down the Two of Swords.

I dream of walking down a slippery slope, terrified of falling, close to the edge of the sea. I am introduced to a man downstairs. We walk back upstairs and I know I have to get away from him, then I wake up.

Inbaal explains the card: ‘The Two of Swords shows a figure holding two heavy swords, which symbolize that you have to make a choice. It’s about indecision or having to choose a path.’

As I walked downstairs to feed the cats, I walked into the kitchen and saw a perfect, white crescent moon and gasped as three ducks literally flew over it in sillouette.

It felt so creepy that I couldn’t wait to tell Inbaal.

‘This is interesting because the number of the card is two and the ducks are three, so that numerically represents progress. Then there is the moon. If you look closely at the card, there is a moon in the background of the figure representing intuition. And a moon with the ducks moving across it is like the universe saying, ‘Go ahead, make a decision.’

I’ve been struggling lately with decisions about everything from midlife crises to investments and retirement, to even where I ultimately want to live.

But something else is also happening. Since choosing the cards and writing down my dreams, I feel more attuned and empathetic. I sense that my daughter is having a difficult day at school and lo and behold, she comes home in tears.

So maybe having this introspection will help me become clearer? Inbaal says that dreams are a bridge not only to our subconscious mind, but also to any dormant psychic ability we have. If you can learn to open your mind deeply to your subconscious thoughts, it can bring about psychic abilities you didn’t even know you had.

At our next meeting, Inbaal tells me how to open and close my chakras. These, she says, are the key energy points in the body that allow you to be more attuned to signals from the universe and spirituality.

During our Zoom we close our eyes and Inbaal gently talks me through the chakras.

‘Put your feet firmly on the floor and do not cross your arms and legs. We start with a few breaths and send our roots further into the ground, making us safe, bounded and secure.’

We then feel the earth energy traveling through the roots to the feet and down our legs until it reaches our base chakra, a red circle at the very top between the legs.

“As the energy reaches the base chakra, a red circle begins to spin and glow,” she says.

My ultimate wish is to contact my father, Julie writes. This was taken on holiday as a little girl

My ultimate wish is to contact my father, Julie writes. This was taken on holiday as a little girl

It travels to the sacral chakra, an orange circle below the navel and to the Solar Plexus, the chakra of the sun, and this circle turns yellow. From there the energy flows to the heart chakra, which is green, and then to the throat chakra, a blue spinning circle.

After a few moments, the energy reaches the third eye – a purple circle on the forehead – and moves to the top of the head, where ‘a bright white shimmering shutter opens and a silver cord extends upward, connecting us to the sky, so that we are nourished, nourished and protected.”

It’s a strange experience.

When I open my eyes, the colors seem brighter, her voice seems clearer, and I feel incredibly sharp and awake, like I’ve had four cups of coffee.

Inbaal tells me this is how I need to be so I can be open to spirits, but it is safest to close the chakras so I don’t absorb unwanted spiritual activity or negative energy.

So could opening chakras make me more available to the spirits of those who have passed away?

“Yes,” she answers.

Over the next few days I will try to open and close the chakras. It becomes easier and easier to do and increasingly relaxing. I can really feel the energy flowing through me and sharpening and awakening once the chakras are open.

My ultimate wish is to contact my father. He died of cancer in 2005 at the age of 59 and I regularly had very lucid dreams in which he visited me. Not so much anymore.

In the coming days I will continue with my Tarot card of the night, my dream journal and the opening and closing of my chakra.

The fifth night I dream of my father. He sits in a large church with no fixed denomination or religion, is younger again and wears a neat suit. He walks away and I keep trying to find him. There are several rooms in the church where people gather and I know I have to find him in one of them.

I wake up and write down my dream, feeling hopeful and wishing I could have had a conversation with him.

I try again the next night and the next. I’ve been trying all week, but he never shows up again.

Inbaal suggests opening the chakra just before bedtime and laying out a tarot card that relates to masculinity. The obvious choice is the Emperor – a strong card of a man sitting on a throne.

I put it down, sleep… and dream of other things.

Inbaal asks what was my father’s zodiac sign. I tell her Cancer and she recommends the Knight of Cups, a water sign but also because the figure carries a crab-like shell.

I put this down one night, open the chakras as she said and fall asleep.

That night in my dream my father comes to me. He is happy and we are in a strange house. He brought a large wrapped gift. It’s a pool table for my son, Alex.

In my dream, Alex is crying because he finally meets my father. It’s a happy dream and when I wake up I’m sad that it’s over. I ask Inbaal about its meaning.

She says, “A house represents your mind, and rooms in the house represent parts of your personality. The house was not a house you recognized, so you now interact in a ‘new’ way, your dynamic as father and daughter has changed. Maybe he has had a lot of time to think about his life and he looks at you in a different way, maybe you have also changed the way you remember him.

‘A wrapped gift is him sharing a message that is not obvious, but symbolic. The fact that it is huge is also meaningful, he really wants to make an impact. I love the symbolism of a pool table. Several possible goals have been set, each of which can be achieved.’

Inbaal asks if a pool table means something specific to me. That is not the case.

“The flatness of a pool table is very meaningful,” she adds. ‘Everyone has a chance. If your son wants to study more but is afraid that everyone will be richer or more intelligent than him, your dad’s pool table could say that once you step on the green, everyone is equal.”

I feel so strengthened now. The Tarot, the crystals, the journal and now the chakra opening have made me realize that I have an empathetic gift.

I hope that as I progress and learn more, it will lead me to an even greater understanding. There are many things I would like to say and ask my father. He died so young and I wish I had gotten more of his advice. I like to think that these dreams can be a bridge to what happens in the future.

THIS week’s South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, featured a host of new technologies, including an interactive film experience about homelessness.

The short film is called The Tent and is experienced via a tablet.

Viewers spend the second half of the film alone and are zipped into a real tent.

One of the most unusual aspects of this form of entertainment is that virtual and augmented reality are often associated with experiencing a life that is better or more expansive than your own.

The Tent offers a different kind of experience that will make you question your own morality.

Director of The Tent Rory Mitchell spoke to The US Sun about why he thinks experiencing VR in this way is important.

“Experiencing the second part of the story in the tent has generated a lot of interesting reactions from the audience.

“I think people find that even sitting on the ground in a tent for ten minutes is too much for them and it causes claustrophobia, cramps and the uncomfortable feeling of being in the tent, giving them a physical sensation that makes them immerses himself in the story further,” he told us.

“At one point we even thought about having people dress up as police officers so they could take you outside afterwards.”

The Tent is a 21-minute mixed-reality cinematic experience that follows the story of a woman in Los Angeles who wakes up to find a homeless person in her front yard.

It is told like a fairy tale and asks the questions, “What does it take to live a life that is in alignment with your deepest values?” and “Why is it so complicated to be a good person?”

The experience begins outside the tent, with viewers looking into a tablet and seeing something that resembles Snow White’s mirror.

You’re told you’re a good person and then you fly to a virtual city and focus on one house in particular.

Viewers can move around while holding the tablet and watch the movie from different angles.

One thing you never see is inside the virtual tent or the person in it.

At first, the woman who owns the house wants to let the homeless man live in her garden and even prepare meals for him regularly.

Artificial Intelligence at South by Southwest

Artificial intelligence was a big topic at South by Southwest (SXSW) 2024. Here’s a look at some of the top stories…

A US politician has called on ‘Swifties to save America’ and issued a stark warning about AI deepfakes ahead of the 2024 election

US Army colonel predicts humanoids could fight as early as 2030, but also warns about the technology

An expert warned that AI ‘minions’ like ChatGPT are eating themselves like ‘flesh-eating snakes’ in a creepy ‘deterioration’ phenomenon

According to ChatGPT head, deepfake scams are “absolutely” something OpenAI is concerned about

The second part of the experience is viewed from the tent and shows the two main characters having various disputes.

By the end, the main character wonders if she should call the police and remove this person from her property.

“I think VR, AR, XR really give us a new way to explore the world and tell stories,” Mitchell told us.

“We can tell distractions. We can tell fun soap operas in this style and we can also, like all great art, tell stories that are about what it means to be human and how we can live better together.”

When asked what he hoped people would get out of this experience, Mitchell responded, “That it’s just a twist of fate whether you’re the woman of the house or the woman in the tent and that we can look at ourselves and make a conversation about ethical activism and how we can best help each other.”

The director also revealed plans to make the film accessible through the App Store.

“The reason we built it for mobile is so we can distribute it through the App Store so people can get a taste of spatial entertainment at home on their kitchen table and it’s still going to be an incredible experience,” he told us.

Famous Big Brother star Louis Walsh told Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu that housemate Nikita Kuzmin is ‘perfect’ when he asked if the Love Islander likes him.

In the upcoming scenes in Wednesday night’s episode, we’ll see Ekin-Su and Louis in bed gossiping about the Strictly Come Dancing professional.

Ekin-Su, 29, tells Louis that Nikita is a “true friend,” prompting the former talent coach to wonder if her feelings are actually just platonic.

The former X Factor judge, 71, tells Ekin-Su that Nikita is a ‘perfect’, and asks the reality star if she likes him.

But Ekin-Su insists she respects Nikita’s relationship, claiming she no longer focuses on looks because she has been stung by it in the past.

In the bedroom, Ekin-Su talks to Louis about Nikita, who is still sleeping. She tells Louis, “He’s a nice guy, he’s a nice person, like a real friend.”

“He’s perfect, he’s a perfect person,” Louis replies, before asking, “Wouldn’t you like him?”

Ekin replies: ‘I’m respectful, he’s in a relationship…’

“You would,” Louis interjects. ‘If he was free and you were free, you would be on a desert island…’

Ekin replies, “I don’t go for looks anymore, that’s what I’ve done in the past and it doesn’t get me anywhere.”

Louis then questions Ekin about her past boyfriends. She reveals she’s had five, saying, “They all lasted two, three years.”

When Louis asks who she loved most, he says: ‘Oh, I know, I know by your little face’

“I can’t say…” Ekin-Su replies, in a possible hint that her Love Island ex Davide Sanclimenti is her true love.

It comes after viewers criticized Louis for his comments about Fern Britton in the girl and boy band task during Tuesday’s episode.

During the episode, the contestants took part in Big Brother’s new show You’re Gonna Be A Star.

Louis sat across from Ekin-Su Culculoglu, Zeze Millz, Lauren Simon and Fern, 66, and asked: “I honestly want to know how things are going.”

Ekin-Su replied: “I’m doing well” and Zeze, 32, agreed, saying: “I’m actually doing well” before Ekin-Su added: “Everyone is doing their best and we’re getting there.”

Louis replied, “You look great. Even Fern looks good.’

The ladies all turned to look at Fern, who immediately reacted and playfully kicked the air in front of Louis.

Louis continued, “Do you know what I mean? You look good.’

Fern crouched low in front of him and repeated, “Even Fern?” while her co-stars told Louis he couldn’t say that.

Unfazed, Louis continued, “And you look great, no one said it was easy. But you know, only one of you will win. And I can only be honest, and so can Sharon.’

Ekin-Su asked, “What advice can you please give us?”

The former Westlife and Boyzone manager was quick to reply to the Love Island star: “Confidence. Sell it. Smile.’

Ekin-Su asked, “Can we be sexy?” and Louis replied, “Please!”

Then he repeated shamelessly, “Even Fern looks good.”

In an open letter Published Monday, the NAACP urged black college athletes to “reconsider any possible decision” to attend a public university in Florida, after last week’s news that the University of Florida is eliminating its Diversity and Inclusion office.

The University of Gainesville decision came in response to a law signed last year by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis that bans the state’s public universities from using state or federal dollars for diversity programs or activities. In a March 1 memo, the university announced it would eliminate 13 positions, including the Chief Diversity Officer, and reallocate $5 million it spent on DEI initiatives.

Monday’s letter, signed by NAACP Board Chairman Leon W. Russell and President and CEO Derrick Johnson, is addressed to NCAA President Charlie Baker and current and future college athletes. It predicts that “while the University of Florida may be the first, it won’t be the last.”

Six public universities in Florida – Florida, Florida State, Central Florida, South Florida, Florida Atlantic and Florida International – compete at the FBS level.

“Florida’s rampant anti-Black policies pose a direct threat to the progress of our young people and their ability to compete in a global economy,” Johnson said in a statement. “Diversity, equity and inclusion are paramount to ensuring fair and effective educational outcomes. The value that Black and other college athletes bring to major universities is unparalleled. If these institutions cannot fully invest in those athletes, it is time for them to take their talents elsewhere.”

The NAACP letter echoes the sentiment of former Gators executive Emmitt Smith, who wrote on March 3 that he was “completely disgusted by UF’s decision and the precedent it sets.”

In his statement, he said, “to the MANY minority athletes at UF: please be aware of this decision by the university, which is now closing its doors to other minorities without any oversight.”

In the school memo announcing the elimination of the DEI office, officials wrote: “The University of Florida is — and always will be — steadfast in our commitment to universal human dignity.”

The NCAA and the Florida governor’s office had not returned messages seeking comment by time of publication. On the day the University of Florida announced it would close its DEI office, DeSantis tweeted: “DEI is toxic and has no place on our public universities.”

It was a night of high glamour – diamonds, couture dresses and A-listers – and should have been the usual spectacle of very rich, very beautiful and very talented artists congratulating each other on a good year for cinema.

Everyone expected that the Barbenheimer boost, which saw the box office soaring, would have a knock on effect and produce a vintage Oscars.

But with nudity, jokes about incest, political controversy and plain old bad taste, plus a hefty dollop of angst about wars, was this the night that the Oscars fumbled the ball?

There was instant outrage when Native American actress Lily Gladstone failed to win for her performance as Mollie Burkhart in Killers of the Flower Moon and even the climax of the night, the announcement of Best Picture, seemed to go awry.

Veteran actor Al Pacino, 83, seemed to struggle to stay on script in a short preamble, before opening his envelope and saying: ‘My eyes see Oppenheimer.’ That brought nervous giggles from some quarters of the auditorium.

It was Oppenheimer’s night with the film taking seven Oscars having been nominated for 13.

There were gasps in the room when Emma Stone’s name was read out as Best Actress at the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday

Conversely it was a bad night for Barbie, which had eight nominations but came away with just one award, for the song What Was I Made For, by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell.

Despite a barnstorming performance of I’m Just Ken by Ryan Gosling, which saw many of the A-listers in the room joining in with the song, and despite its colossal financial success, it was largely shut out.

Was one Oscar Kenough reward for the biggest film of the year which was very clearly popular in the room?

It was an even worse night for Maestro, Bradley Cooper’s passion project about the composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein. Maestro was nominated for seven Oscars and came away without a single one. Cooper was also beaten once again in the race for Best Actor, at the third time of asking.

Cooper also had to endure some bad-taste teasing from host Jimmy Kimmel about his habit of bringing his devoted mother Gloria as his date to awards.

Kimmel said: ‘Bradley brings his mother to every awards show. How any times can you bring your mom as your date before you are dating your mom? Are you working on a movie about Freud right now and not telling us?’

He is dating supermodel Gigi Hadid but the couple didn’t make any appearances together at pre-Oscars parties and opted not to go to the Vanity Fair party either.

There were some moments of delight, such as a cut away showing Messi the dog, a star of Anatomy of a Fall ‘clapping’, and some found John Cena’s naked sketch funny.

Actor and former wrestler Cena came on naked aside from a strategically placed gold envelope to announce the winner of the Costume Design Oscar.

The first Oppen-Oscar went to Robert Downey Jr., who won best supporting actor just as had been predicted and made a gracious, gag-filled speech.

He said: ‘I’d like to thank my terrible childhood and The Academy, in that order. I’d like to thank my — veterinarian — I meant wife, Susan Downey over there. She found me a snarling rescue pet and you loved me back to life. That’s why I’m here. Thank you.’

He went on: ‘Here’s my little secret. I needed this job more than it needed me. (Director) Chris (Nolan) knew it, (producer) Emma (Thomas) made sure that she surrounded me with one of the great casts and crews of all time, Emily, Cillian, it was fantastic.

‘And I stand here before you a better man because of it. What we do is meaningful, and the stuff that we decide to make is important.’

He shrugged off the outrage which greeted a drug gag seemingly improvised by host Kimmel after Downey Jr. touched his nose during his opening monologue. He had also looked unamused when Kimmel asked him: ‘Is that an acceptance speech in your pocket or do you just have a very rectangular penis?

Cillian Murphy became the first Irish-born winner of a Best Actor Oscar and won a standing ovation from the crowd which made him chuckle in delight. He said: ‘It’s been the wildest most exhilarating most creatively satisfying ride.’

Addressing director Chris Nolan and his wife Emma Thomas he said: ‘I owe you so much thank you. I’m a very proud Irishman standing here tonight.

‘You know we made a film about the man who created the atomic bomb for better or for worse. We are all living in Oppenheimer’s world so I would really like to dedicate this to the peacemakers everywhere.’

Accepting an Oscar for directing, Nolan paid tribute to his cast and crew. He added: ‘Thank you do those who have been there for me and believed in me for my whole career, the incredible Emma Thomas, the producer of all our films and all our children, I love you.

‘To the Academy. Just to say movies are just over 100 years old. Imagine being there 100 years into theatre or painting and we don’t know where we are going to go, but to know that you think I am a meaningful part of it means the world to me.’

Cinematography went to Hoyte van Hoytema, previously nominated for Christopher Nolans film Dunkirk. From the stage van Hoytema said: ‘Woah, steady. To all the aspiring film makers out there I would like to say please try shooting that incredible hip new thing celluloid.. it makes things look so much better.’

Jennifer Lame won achievement in film editing for Oppenheimer. She said: ‘Emma Thomas you amaze me… Chris Nolan you are okay too. I was terrified when you first hired me but you instilled so much confidence in me.’

She later said: ‘So many people came to me and didn’t think the film was too long even though it was three hours. I have so many favorite scenes with Cillian. I was mesmerized by his performance. You wanted to know who he was even though he is inscrutable.’

Ludwig Goransson won best original score for Oppenheimer. He said that it had been Nolan’s idea to use a violin as the motif. He thanked his parents for giving him guitars and drum machines instead of video games.

The best picture Oscar was accepted by Nolan’s wife Emma Thomas.

She said: ‘All of us who make movies know that you dream of this moment. I could deny it but I have been dreaming of this for so long and now it has happened. The reason that this is the movie that it is, is Chris Nolan he is singular and he is brilliant and I am so grateful to you.’

There were gasps in the room when Emma Stone’s name was read out as Best Actress for her fearless performance as Bella Baxter in Poor Things. It had been a neck and neck actress race between Lily Gladstone for Killers of the Flower Moon and Emma Stone for Poor Things, but many felt that Gladstone was going to clinch the statuette.

Stone, who previously won for LaLa Land, said that she was overwhelmed and added that the zip on her dress had broken, adding: ‘I think it happened during “I’m Just Ken.”‘

She went on: ‘This is really overwhelming. Sorry. My voice has gone.

‘The other night I was panicking as you can see it happens a lot and Yorgos said to me please take yourself out of it and he’s right its not about me its about a team that came together to make something that is greater than the sum of its parts. Yorgos thank you for the gift of a lifetime in Bella Baxter.’

The cerebral epic about the life of Robert J Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, didn’t have everything go its way.

Notably it lost out out on the sound Oscar to The Zone of Interest, a British film about the Holocaust in which the murders in Auschwitz are conveyed only as background noises.

It also lost out on Costume Design and Hair and Makeup to the Yorgos Lanthimos sex comedy Poor Things.

Some of the most surprising results saw Barbie lose out on production design and costume design. More predictably, Ryan Gosling was shut out in favor of Robert Downey Jr, and Oppenheimer won Best Picture.

Kimmel said in his opening monologue: ‘Here we are, all dressed up, celebrating the best of the best, beginning with the biggest movie of the year, Barbie. Barbie was a monster hit.

‘What a thing. What an achievement to take a plastic doll nobody even liked anymore, I mean, my wife, before this movie, you would had a better chance getting my wife to buy my daughter a pack of Marlboro Reds than a Barbie doll.

‘Now Barbie is a feminist icon, thanks to Greta Gerwig, who many believed deserved to nominated for best director tonight.

‘Hold on a second. I know you’re clapping, but you’re the ones who didn’t vote for her, by the way. Don’t act like you had nothing to do with this.’

The hostilities in Gaza were on the minds of many on Sunday night, with some attendees having to walk the final few yards to the venue after pro-Palestinian protestors closed some roads. Pop star and actress Ariana Grande was among those to be held up. Singer Billie Eilish wore a pin supporting efforts to bring peace.

Accepting the Oscar for documentary feature film 20 Days in Mariupol, Mstylslav Chernov said that this was the first Academy Award in Ukrainian film history.

He said: ‘I will probably be the first director on the stage to say I wish I had never made this film. I wish to exchange this (Oscar) for Russia never invading Ukraine, never occupying our cities, to Russia not killing tens of thousands of Ukrainians.’

He went on: ‘I cannot change history, cannot change the past. We can make sure that the history record is set straight and that the truth will prevail and the people of Mariupol and those who have given their lives will never be forgotten.’

Animated short film was won by War Is Over! Inspired by the Music of John & Yoko. Their son Sean Ono Lennon was an executive producer on the film which follows two soldiers on opposite sides of a battle playing chess while communicating through carrier pigeon.

Sean Ono Lennon flashed peace signs from the stage of the Dolby Theatre. He said: ‘My mom turned 91 last month and today is Mother’s Day in the UK, so can everyone please say happy mother’s day Yoko!’

Producer Dave Mullins said later: ‘We would like people to talk a little more, kill a little less, I know that sounds naïve.’

The first award of the night was presented to Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who won best actress in a supporting role for playing grieving mother Mary Lamb in The Holdovers.

In an emotional speech she thanked God, her drama teacher, her mother and her publicist, adding: ‘I am so grateful for all the women who have been by my side.’

She added: ‘You know, I… I didn’t think I was supposed to be doing this as a career. I started off as a singer. And my mother said to me, “Go across that street to that theater department. There’s something for you there.”

‘And I thank my mother for doing that. I thank you to all the people who have stepped in my path and has been there for me, who has ushered me and guided me.

‘I am so grateful to all of you beautiful people out there.

Leading actress Sandra Huller cried during a speech about the conflict in the Middle East

‘For so long I’ve always wanted to be different, and now I realize I just need to be myself. Ron Van Lieu, I thank you when I was the only black girl in that class, when you saw me and you told me I was enough.

‘And when I told you I don’t see myself, you said, ‘That’s fine. We’re going to forge our own path. You’re going to lay a trail for yourself.’

The best original screenplay went to Anatomy of a Fall by Justine Triet and Arthur Harari. Triet said: ‘Thank you so much, it will help me through my mid life crisis I think. This is a crazy year.

The glamour of tonight contrasts slightly with writing… I was stuck in the house with two kids it was lockdown. We hooked them up to cartoons to have peace.’ Harari added: ‘It was like mixed doubles ping pong played by neurotic French.’

Triet later said that they had wanted to have Dolly Parton’s song Jolene playing on repeat in the film but failed to get the rights so they ended up with the 50 Cent Song PIMP.

Best adapted screenplay was American Fiction – the first upset of the night, beating Barbie, Poor Things, Oppenheimer and The Zone of Interest.

Writer Cord Jefferson used the platform to make the case for lower budget films. ‘Instead of making one $200 million movie try making twenty $10 million movies.

‘I want other people to experience that joy. The next Scorsese is out there the next Greta (Gerwig) the next Christopher Nolan.

‘This has changed my life thank you for trusting a 40 year old black guy who has never directed a movie before.’

Afterwards he said that it had been important to show diversity within diversity in the film, which is about a professor who writes a satire of a ‘black’ book only for the liberal elite to hail it as a masterpiece.

He said: ‘As Victor Hugo said, nothing is more powerful than an idea whose time has come. We didn’t have a big marketing budget so we relied on word of mouth a lot.

‘Hopefully the lesson here is that there is an audience here for things that are different.

‘A story with black characters that is going to appeal to a lot of people doesn’t need to take place in a plantation in the projects to have drug dealers in it.’

Another surprise was the win for animated film The Boy and The Heron over Spider-man: Across The Spiderverse.

Poor Things won Best Make Up and Hairstyling, again a surprise as many had thought that this was Maestro’s best chance to convert one of its nominations into a win.

Production design – which many thought might go to Barbie- went to Poor Things. Accepting the Oscar, James Price said: ‘This is crazy! I feel in the mood for love and custard tarts.’

Again, many thought that Barbie would win costume design, and again this went to Poor Things.

The Zone of Interest – about Rudolf Hess and his family living just outside Auschwitz, was Britain’s interest in the best international film category and won.

Writer and director Jonathan Glazer said: ‘All our choices were made to reflect and confront us in the present, not to say look what they did then, but rather look what we do now.’ Our film shows where dehumanization leads at its worst.

‘It’s shaped all of our past and present. Right now, we stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation which has led to conflict for so many innocent people.’

‘Whether the victims of October — whether the victims of October the 7th in Israel or the ongoing attack on Gaza, all the victims of this dehumanization, how do we resist?’

Leading actress Sandra Huller cried copiously as he spoke.

Visual effects went to Oscar Godzilla Minus One. Documentary short film was won by The Last Repair Shop.

Lawmakers in Washington introduced a bill this week calling on TikTok to cut ties with its Chinese parent company or be banned in the United States. When many users opened the popular app on Thursday, the company greeted them with a message opposing the legislation, prompting a flood of calls to various Capitol Hill offices.

“Stop a TikTok shutdown,” the message on the app read. It included a button for people to call their representatives and say, “Let Congress know what TikTok means to you and tell them to vote NO.”

By noon, phone lines for members of Congress were flooded with calls, according to messages from staffers of lawmakers at X and two congressional aides with knowledge of the situation. Some callers appeared to be teenagers, while others hung up as soon as they connected, aides said. One employee posted a screenshot on X showing that TikTok is also present sent a push alert for some users.

Some users on X said they couldn’t use the app before calling; it was unclear whether it was possible to bypass the message.

Tech companies have often tried to mobilize users in response to legislation, but rarely have these efforts been so overt.

Lawmakers on the House Energy and Commerce Committee approved the legislation 50-0 on Thursday. It aims to force TikTok’s Chinese owner ByteDance to sell the app. The House bill is one of several attempts over the past year to restrict TikTok over concerns that ByteDance’s relationship with Beijing poses national security risks.

Representatives Mike Gallagher, a Republican from Wisconsin, and Raja Krishnamoorthi, a Democrat from Illinois, who are co-sponsors of the bill, criticized TikTok’s message, saying it was misleading. “Here you have an example of an adversary-controlled application lying to the American people and disrupting the legislative process in Congress,” they said.

TikTok did not immediately respond to requests for comment. It had previously said lawmakers’ fears were unfounded, in part because its U.S. operations and user data are protected from the rest of the organization.

The legislation has a long way to go before it becomes law. Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana, the speaker of the House of Representatives, said Thursday he supported the bill. If the full House approves the legislation, it will go to the Senate.

Senator Mark Warner, Democrat of Virginia, who has introduced his own legislation targeting the app, said he had some concerns about how the new bill directly mentioned TikTok and ByteDance, a fact that could be cited in a legal challenge of the legislation. But he said, “I have tremendous respect for Congressman Gallagher and I am going to take a closer look at this bill.”

Sen. Chuck Schumer, the majority leader, determines which legislation is considered by the full Senate. His spokesperson did not answer when asked whether he supported the TikTok legislation.

Mike Nellis, a Democratic digital strategist and former senior adviser to Kamala Harris, said TikTok’s warning to users was a “smart organizing tactic.”

But he added: “I would be concerned that the tactic would backfire and highlight the real problem, which is that a foreign-owned tech company has so much influence within the United States.”

Mr. Nellis, who has worked on campaigns advertised on TikTok, also said, “I imagine members of Congress are feeling more pressure to take action than before after being inundated with these types of calls.”

On Thursday afternoon, the House Energy and Commerce Committee sent a note to lawmakers’ offices with advice on how to respond to the flood of calls. The note, obtained by The New York Times, included the committee’s arguments in favor of the bill and “phone scripts” for responding directly to callers.

One of the scripts suggested that employees tell callers that “TikTok lied about the bill” and that the app “has worked very hard to hide its relationship with China.”

“The bill requires TikTok to sever that relationship,” the committee script said. It advised employees to tell callers that when the app does that, “you can continue to use TikTok” without Chinese influence.

South Africa has asked the United Nations’ highest court to issue emergency orders to Israel to end what it called the “genocidal starvation” of the Palestinian people, citing UN warnings that Gaza risks was under threat of famine.

The request made Wednesday to the International Court of Justice in The Hague was part of a case filed by South Africa in December accusing Israel of genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza. Israel has strongly denied the accusation of genocide and on Thursday the Foreign Ministry called on the court to reject South Africa’s latest request.

“South Africa continues to act as the legal arm of Hamas in an attempt to undermine Israel’s inherent right to defend itself and its citizens and to release all hostages,” said Lior Haiat, a spokesman for Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. said on social media.

It was not immediately clear when the court would respond to the request. In January, in an initial ruling in the broader genocide case, the court ordered Israel to act to prevent its forces from committing genocide in Gaza and to increase the amount of humanitarian aid reaching the territory’s citizens.

Last month, South Africa asked the court to issue an emergency injunction to stop Israel from sending troops to the southern Gaza city of Rafah. The court did not do this, but said Israel must adhere to its original order to prevent genocide.

The judges of the World Court, as it is also known, have not ruled on the core question of whether a genocide is taking place in Gaza, a complex charge that will likely take them months or years to decide. For now, they have ordered a series of measures, amounting to temporary orders, aimed at protecting Palestinian civilians, as they found the dangers of genocide “plausible.”

The genocide case has thrust the usually slow-moving court into the global spotlight, turning it into a platform for tense arguments and disputes over Israel’s war in Gaza. Despite the symbolic weight of the charges before it, the court, which settles disputes between UN member states, does not have any means to force Israel to follow its orders.

In its request on Wednesday, South Africa accused Israel of causing widespread hunger and near-famine throughout Gaza. Health authorities there say children are dying every day from malnutrition and dehydration, and aid groups say people are hungry enough to resort to food leaves, donkey food and food scraps.

“Palestinian children are dying of hunger as a direct result of Israel’s deliberate acts and omissions – in violation of the Genocide Convention and the court’s order,” lawyers for South Africa wrote in the filing.

For months, international observers and aid agencies have warned that Gaza’s 2.2 million citizens are facing famine, amid acute shortages of food and water. Distributing limited supplies within the territory has become more challenging, amid the destruction of infrastructure and increasing lawlessness as desperate people loot aid convoys.

In asking the court to intervene, South Africa pointed to last week’s deadly aid delivery in northern Gaza and Israel’s attempts to block UNRWA, the main UN agency providing aid to Palestinians. refugees, to discredit. South Africa said the humanitarian situation in Gaza had deteriorated rapidly in the weeks since the court refused to issue an emergency order to stop a possible Israeli advance on Rafah. At the time, the court said the “dangerous situation” throughout Gaza required Israel to comply with its order to prevent genocide.

“The situation that was ‘dangerous’ then is now so terrifying as to be unspeakable,” South Africa said in the dossier.

Justin Bieber turned 30 on Friday.

And fans went crazy over the milestone after growing up with the singer who released hits for teens like Baby and Sorry.

His followers flooded his Instagram account with well wishes.

Most said, “Congratulations Justin!” but many others were shocked that he had already reached this age.

‘Bro, 30 already? How can it be? Last time I checked you were 21,” said one fan.

Others asked him to work harder: ‘Where’s the new album?’ one asked, while another joked, “Justin, we don’t want much, just a world tour!”

And there were several sweet stories like this: ‘Congratulations Justin, many years of more and more lives for you, I have been following you since I was nine years old and today I am almost 24 and I say and repeat thank you because you exist, I am very grateful to be your fan.”

This comes after his wife Hailey Bieber’s father Stephen Baldwin asked fans to say a “little prayer” for his daughter and son-in-law Justin.

Hailey is reportedly ‘pissed’ at her actor dad.

Sources close to the Vogue model told TMZ that she and Justin are currently going through a “private” family matter.

Father Stephen was aware of the problem and felt he needed to hint to the world that there were problems.

It is not known whether the problems have to do with their relationship or health, but the actor did say that it had to do with ‘marriage and faith’.

Hailey has publicly ignored her father’s call for prayer.

Stephen raised eyebrows when he reposted a video of Justin singing that was shared by Victor Marx, the founder of All Things Possible Ministries.

He captioned it, “Christians, as you think of Justin and Hailey, please take a moment to say a little prayer for them to gain wisdom, protection and draw close to the Lord.”

The 58-year-old evangelist also wrote that his wife Eileen Marx and Hailey’s mother Kennya Deodato Baldwin “often pray together” for the couple, who married in 2018.

“There are special challenges that people in high visibility positions face, and the enemy doesn’t want them to get closer to Jesus either,” Victor wrote.

“So often, regardless of the material things or the accolades, they often face spiritual warfare [is] intense and tries to destroy their faith, marriage and life in general. So thank you.’ Marx has now deleted the message.
