As BMW bodies slid down the assembly line recently in Munich, engulfed in sparks from robotic welders, it was difficult to tell which vehicles would be powered by batteries, fuel engines or both. According to many analysts, that is not a good thing.

The German carmaker’s electric vehicles are made on the same assembly line as petrol cars and look the same from the outside. This approach, which uses the same basic body for electric, hybrid, gasoline and diesel cars, is seen as a difficult and inefficient compromise that some established automakers have adopted as they struggle to compete with Tesla and emerging Chinese automakers that produce cars exclusively are designed for batteries. current.

But what confuses the experts is that BMW’s strategy has paid off. The company sold 376,000 electric vehicles last year, including some under the Mini brand, a 75 percent increase from the previous year. In the luxury segment, BMW came second to Tesla, which remained dominant with 1.8 million cars. Electric vehicles accounted for 15 percent of BMW sales in 2023, up from 9 percent the year before.

The company’s growth comes as sales of electric vehicles around the world have increased at a slower pace. What’s even more surprising is that, unlike General Motors or Ford Motor, BMW made a profit on the electric vehicles it sold.

BMW’s experience suggests there is hope for at least some established automakers as Chinese automakers such as BYD begin exporting cars to other Asian countries, Europe and Latin America. As electric vehicles become increasingly popular, the popularity of BMW cars suggests that many buyers value the familiarity and craftsmanship of long-standing automakers and remain wary of newer brands.

If so, BMW’s approach could point the way to other automakers that have been producing cars for decades but have made little progress in the transition to battery-powered vehicles.

BMW’s strategy gave the company time to develop expertise in battery technology and design a line of cars that were specifically electric. It has helped the Munich-based company cope with fluctuations in demand as it can more easily ramp up or down production of different types of cars.

The approach also helped BMW retain customers who are interested in electric propulsion but are not ready for a sharp break with the past. The company offers hybrid versions of some of its most popular models and says buyers should be able to choose a car’s powertrain technology as easily as its color.

“We would lose our traditional customers if you told them, ‘You are part of the old world,’” BMW CEO Oliver Zipse said in an interview, referring to people who still preferred cars with combustion engine. “They would defect immediately.”

Next year, BMW will begin selling a new line of cars designed to run solely on batteries. Last month, at a company event at a location overlooking a rocky, wave-swept coastal area north of Lisbon, Mr. Zipse showed off prototypes of a sedan and a crossover SUV that are part of what the company calls the Neue Klasse. or New Class.

These cars will offer significant improvements over existing models, including batteries that store 20 percent more energy per pound, and features not available from Tesla, such as a digital display that runs along the entire bottom of the windshield.

The customizable display gives drivers speed, range, weather and navigation information without having to take their eyes off the road, and eliminates the need for an instrument cluster in front of the steering wheel. Most Teslas have one large display in the center of the dashboard, requiring drivers to look to the side to see maps and other information. That screen also contains many of the car’s controls.

In addition, the new BMWs will be available with autonomous driving technology that allows drivers to take their hands off the wheel on highways and change lanes just by looking in the side mirror. This feature directly challenges Tesla’s vaunted self-driving technology.

Ever since Tesla proved electric vehicles are practical and fun over the past decade, it has been an open question which car companies would rule the industry. Tesla, with roots in Silicon Valley, has led the way in software and battery technology but has struggled with production and introduction of new models. The established car companies had decades of experience in manufacturing, but faced a steep learning curve in batteries and software.

BMW is likely to survive this fraught transition to electric vehicles because of its technical expertise, strong brand and profit margins that have allowed the company to invest in new technology, says Matthew Fine, portfolio manager at Third Avenue Management, an investment firm that owns BMW. BMW shares.

“We thought this would give them a really good fighting chance,” Mr. Fine said. “And that seems to be true so far.”

The luxury car manufacturer started the transition to electric vehicles with certain advantages. The brand recently reached the top Consumer Reports rankings of car brands who make the best vehicles for the second year in a row. Tesla ranked 18th out of 34 brands on the list.

But Tesla has significant advantages. A Tesla Model S, which starts at $75,000, can travel more than 400 miles on a charge, compared to about 320 miles for a BMW i7, which starts at more than $100,000, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. BMW said the next generation of cars should more than make up for that shortage with smaller batteries that offer 30 percent more range.

Tesla could be vulnerable in several areas. Shares of the company, which is led by Elon Musk, have lost more than half their value since their peak in 2021. BMW shares are up about 17 percent over the same period. Wall Street still values Tesla at more than eight times BMW’s stock market value.

Tesla’s lineup is getting dated by automotive standards. The company recently started selling an upgraded version of its Model 3 in the United States, but hasn’t introduced a completely redesigned sedan or SUV since 2020. Tesla is producing its latest model, the Cybertruck, which was launched last year, in limited quantities. Numbers.

“Newcomers,” Mr. Zipse said without naming Tesla, “if they are not careful, they may grow old before they reach adulthood.”

A ride in an i7, an electric incarnation of BMW’s flagship sedan popular with politicians and business executives, offers a lesson in the comfort that’s crucial to the company’s appeal. The car, which looks almost identical from the outside to its internal combustion counterpart, is eerily quiet even at highway speeds. The car comes with a large video screen that folds down from the ceiling.

Mr Zipse states that BMW is not just a car manufacturer. “BMW, yes, it’s a car company,” he said. But he added: “At its core, it is a technology company that has the ability to integrate very different technologies into one product.”

In Munich, BMW is demolishing buildings used to produce combustion engines to make room for assembly lines that will produce Neue Klasse cars. The last V-8 rolled off the assembly line last year.

BMW buys most of its batteries from suppliers like China’s CATL, which also sells to Tesla but develops its own technology. In a building with blue and gray corrugated iron walls in the Munich suburb of Parsdorf, BMW operates a mini-factory where it tests new battery designs and production processes. One change means that a slurry containing lithium and other active ingredients may be mixed in a continuous stream rather than in batches, which is now the conventional practice. The process is faster and cheaper.

From 2027, BMW will produce only electric vehicles in Munich, although it will continue to produce models with combustion engines at other plants. The company has major factories in Shenyang, China; Spartanburg, SC; and other locations in Europe. BMW has said it will begin producing electric vehicles in the United States by the end of the decade.

Unlike Audi and other competitors, Mr. Zipse has refused to put an expiration date on internal combustion engines, drawing criticism from environmental groups.

“BMW could lead the European car industry in the transition to electric vehicles if it made a clear commitment to ending the production of combustion engines that harm the climate,” said Benjamin Stephan, a transportation expert at Greenpeace in Germany, in an e-mail. -mail.

But Mr Zipse said the future of the industry is clearly electric. Sales of BMWs with engines have remained steady, he noted. “The fastest growing segment is electromobility,” said Mr Zipse. Electric vehicles, he added, “will be a dominant market force.”

A BMW engineer allegedly murdered by a woman inspired to kill by the Netflix series 'Don't F*** with Cats' could have been knocked unconscious with a bottle of vodka before drowning in a river, a Home Office pathologist told the court today.

Dr. Brett Lockyer told a jury that Jorge Carreno suffered “blunt force trauma” to the back of the head.

He said a bottle of vodka 'used as a weapon' may have caused the injuries and bleeding under the skull he found during a post-mortem examination.

The jury in the trial of cat killer Scarlet Blake, 25, has heard that financial records show she bought a bottle of vodka online before the alleged murder.

A red Smirnoff vodka bottle cap found by Carreno's body on the riverbank contained traces of Blake's DNA, Oxford Crown Court has been told.

Scarlet Blake, 25, (centre) – who was described as obsessed with torture and violence – is on trial at Oxford Crown Court, charged with the murder of Jorge Carreno

During his testimony on the fifth day of the murder trial, Dr Lockyer said Carreno, 30, had a deep bruise measuring about 2cm on the back of his head.

He said the object would have caused bleeding under the skin because “the head hit an object or an object hit the head.”

When asked by prosecutor Alison Morgan KC whether a bottle of vodka could have caused the injury, he replied: “A bottle of that type that doesn't break, yes, absolutely.”

He said the blow could have caused the victim to lose consciousness.

Blake – who was described as obsessed with torture and violence – was the last person seen with Carreno as they walked the streets of Oxford in the early morning hours of July 2021.

CCTV footage shows Blake – who was live-streamed dissecting a cat and putting it in a blender months before the alleged murder – led Carreno to his death.

The engineer's death was initially thought to be a suicide or an accident, and remained unsolved for two years.

But following a complex police investigation by Thames Valley Police, Blake was arrested and charged with murder.

On the third day of the trial, bodycam footage from the first police officer on the scene was played at Oxford Crown Court, showing Mr Carreno's body being pulled from the water.

When police examined her cell phone, they found a collage of nine female serial killers and other images and boxes depicting strangulation.

The jury at Oxford Crown Court watched a video of Blake strangling a partner before passing out.

In the background of the video was a leopard print bathrobe cord and Blake took a selfie with the garment before walking through the streets looking for a victim.

Dr. Lockyer told the jury that a mark on the victim's neck could have been caused by a ligature.

He said a wide ligature could have caused the injury, but all traces would have disappeared if the body had been in the water for a while.

The jury of five women and seven men heard audio of a cat being killed along with Blake and the woman she live streamed during the horrific event while discussing the Netflix series 'Don't F*** with Cats '.

As she killed the rescue animal named Starlet, the New Order song “True Faith” could be heard in the background.

Canadian killer Paul Magnotta played the same song while choking cats and posted the videos on the Internet.

He was tracked down by animal lovers and convicted of the murder of computer technician Lin Jun in 2012.

Dr. Lockyer said his post-mortem verdict was that Carreno died by drowning, with alcohol intoxication being a factor.

He said Carreno was almost twice the legal drink-driving limit after spending the evening drinking with colleagues at BMW's Cowley plant.

He said: 'Whether the level of intoxication caused Mr Carreno to enter the water or impaired his ability to deliver himself from the water cannot be determined.'

The pathologist said he ended his initial report by saying that his results were based on facts presented at the time, but that if other information came to light it should be taken into consideration.

He was later shown the cat killing video and Blake's penchant for strangulation, and was asked to reconsider his original findings, including the possibility of strangulation.

Blake denies the murder and the trial continues.

Figure designs the bots for difficult, unsafe or annoying tasks in the production process.

BMW and Figure claim the humanoids will allow workers to focus on more important tasks.

In a press release, the companies say these robots will enable “continuous improvements in production efficiency and safety.”

“Single-purpose robotics has saturated the commercial market for decades, but the potential of universal robotics has been completely untapped,” said Brett Adcock, Founder and CEO of Figure.

“Figure's robots will enable companies to increase productivity, reduce costs and create a safer and more consistent environment,” Adcock added.

“We look forward to integrating side by side with BMW Manufacturing [artificial intelligence] and robotics in automotive production.”

In the first phase, Figure will identify use cases to apply the robots in automotive production.

The second phase includes a phased implementation at BMW's South Carolina plant.

In addition to these two phases, BMW Manufacturing and Figure plan to explore advanced technologies such as AI, robot control, production virtualization and robot integration.

“The automotive industry, and therefore vehicle production, is evolving rapidly,” said Dr. Robert Engelhorn, President and CEO of BMW Manufacturing.

“BMW Manufacturing is committed to integrating innovative technologies into our production systems to advance our future as a market leader and innovator,” he added.

“Using general-purpose robotic solutions has the potential to make productivity more efficient, support growing demand from our consumers and allow our team to focus on the transformation ahead.”

Not everyone is a fan of this move by BMW, as some fear that robots will take over human jobs.

Michael Walsh out Nerdist said BMW's bots look like a “sci-fi disaster come to life,” but didn't elaborate much on why.

Yet BMW is certainly not the first company, and certainly not the last, to use robots in the workplace.

Tesla's Optimus bot is another great example of the technology that is quickly coming.

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, a total of 1,025,474 cars and commercial vehicles were built last year.

The total retail value was over £50 billion.

Approximately 905,117 cars were made, with the majority of British-made engines manufactured for foreign buyers.

A total of 713,870 were exported, of which only 191,247 were built for the British market.

The top five British-built models for export were the Nissan Qashqai, Mini, Toyota Corolla, Nissan Juke and the Range Rover.

Manufacturers of specialist, luxury and performance cars also had a banner year, with 34,613 vehicles, worth an estimated £7.1 billion.

Commercial vehicle production in the UK rose by 18.5 percent, with 120,357 vans, trucks, taxis, buses and coaches leaving the factory.

SMMT chief Mike Hawes said: “Reducing supply chain challenges, the introduction of new models and a huge £23.7 billion investment will see UK car production back on track by 2023.”

However, he warned that “global competition is fiercer than ever”.

The sector was boosted in late 2023 by the postponement of stricter rules of origin for batteries and electric vehicles traded between the UK and EU.

This move should help safeguard the competitiveness of the UK sector.

Festive delays hurt Halfords

HALFORDS said consumers cutting back on their cars is hurting trading in the run-up to the Christmas period.

Automotive equipment sales fell 15.3 percent in December, compared with a 10.2 percent increase in October and November.

The retailer's boss, Graham Stapleton, said: “It is a very challenging time for our customers.

“We continue to see drivers putting off essential maintenance and there is a worrying increase in potentially unsafe vehicles on the road.”

Turnover in the car repair chain Autocentres increased by 5.1 percent, but bicycle sales fell by 1.2 percent.

Martens smart

DR MARTENS has been hit by plummeting sales in the US, which fell by almost a third by the end of 2023.

That's despite continued support from celebrity fans like Selena Gomez, Olivia Rodrigo and Phoebe Bridgers, all of whom have recently been pictured wearing the company's boots.

The slump in the US saw global sales fall 21 percent to £267 million in the final three months of the year.

The company said its U.S. operations suffered a major warehouse problem and are now facing a “weak consumer environment.”

Boss Kenny Wilson said: “While the consumer environment remains challenging, we are taking action to continue to grow our brand and invest in our business.”

The well-known shoe brand went public on the London stock exchange in January 2021, but has been struggling since then.

The shares are now worth about four-fifths less than they were then, but dealers see the company's future as promising and the share price shot up about ten percent yesterday.

Feeling of fever

TONIC water and mixer company Fever-Tree has increased its market share in pubs and restaurants. while the new Espresso Martini mixer is popular for home sales.

However, UK sales have fallen by one per cent in the past six months to £114.8m.

But sales were boosted by a strong performance in the US, with sales rising 22 percent to £117 million.

Boss Tim Warrillow said: “In the US, we have expanded our leadership position in both the tonic and ginger beer categories.”

Shares in financial adviser St James's Place fell 5 per cent yesterday as it emerged that the amount people invested in the firm had fallen to £5.12 billion, from £9.78 billion a year earlier.

Shares have fallen 48 percent in the past year.

A pinch in sales

Soft drinks maker Britvic reported an 8 percent increase in sales to £443.5 million in the three months to the end of December.

According to the company, sales in the South American country increased by 21 percent thanks to an acquisition in Brazil, while British sales increased by 6.9 percent.

Boss Simon Litherland said: “We are pleased with the start to the year.”

He promised “exciting plans for the year ahead,” including a refresh of the Pepsi brand.

Britvic has an agreement to make Pepsi in Britain.

Fuller's celebratory cheer

PUB giant Fuller's said sales increased by more than a fifth over the festive period.

And the chain claimed it had delivered a “great performance” in both its pubs and hotels.

Like-for-like sales are up 11.5 percent year to date.

The Chiswick-based company, which operates 370 locations across the UK, said customers had shaken off concerns about the cost of living to celebrate Christmas.

The news echoed similar statements earlier this week from rivals JD Wetherspoon and Marston's, both of which had improved festive sales.

Like rival pub chains, Fuller's is concerned about the rise in the national living wage and business rates.

Boss Simon Emeny said the company continues to be affected by the “challenging economic environment” but has “exciting plans” to grow.

He added: “The company is in excellent shape.”

I'll give it some lip

CONSUMER healthcare group Haleon, formerly part of drug giant GSK, is selling its lip balm brand ChapStick to a US private equity firm for £401 million to reduce debt.

Haleon, owner of brands including Sensodyne toothpaste and Panadol pain relief, will acquire £338m plus a £63m minority stake in US buyer Suave Brands Company.

Suave is owned by US private equity firm Yellow Wood Partners.

A shopping center has confirmed it has banned an elderly couple for life after they were caught tinkering with a Tesla and a BMW in the centre's car park.

Raymond Edwards and his wife Barbara, both 70, were arrested and fined when they were caught on camera holding cars at Brookside Shopping Centre, in Brisbanethe inner north, last October.

And now Greg Plawecki, manager of the mall has revealed the couple's punishment didn't end there.

“Mr and Mrs Edwards have been banned from Brookside Shopping Center due to their destructive actions in the car park against other customers' cars,” Mr Plawecki told Daily Mail Australia.

But the couple can cling to the hope that they will one day be able to shop there.

“This ban is subject to review within 12 months at the request of Mr. and Mrs. Edwards,” Mr. Plawecki said.

'The assessment is at the center's discretion and based on demonstrated good behavior since the incident.'

The Ferny Hills couple had no idea that their little act of revenge in the parking lot was picked up by the Tesla's watch mode camera, leading to them being tracked down and brought to justice.

On Wednesday, Edwards, 70, told Daily Mail Australia that his and Barbara's actions that day were “completely out of line”.

Standing outside his home, Mr Edwards said he and Barbara had let frustration get the better of them after they were 'cut off' and almost forced into a utility pole by a white Tesla and a white BMW about half a mile from the shops .

Mr Edwards admitted keying the cars was the wrong decision before launching into a tirade about the behavior of motorists.

He also stated that he would never own an electric vehicle and that he would “stand there and clap” if he ever saw a Tesla on fire on the side of the road.

“I regret our actions, but the point is that civility has been thrown out the window and stupidity has been thrown in,” Edwards said.

Mr. Edwards has since invested in a dashboard camera so that he has evidence for authorities to present the next time he and Barbara are run off the road.

'I constantly see people driving irresponsibly and you see the police in the area doing nothing.'

Mr Edwards, who added that he has never had a criminal conviction, said that in more than 50 years of driving he could count on one hand the number of driving offenses he has been guilty of.

“Whoever teaches these people to drive should take a good look at themselves,” he said.

Last week the couple were convicted after they were caught on camera keeping an eye on the luxury vehicles.

Mr Edwards was ordered to pay $2,443.61 in compensation for damage caused to the Tesla and the BMW, while Ms Edwards was ordered to pay the remaining $897.25 for repair work to the Tesla.

As they left the court, the couple was protected with umbrellas by their family and friends in an attempt to escape the photo.

“It cost me almost $5,000. “I plan to pay $50 every two weeks until it pays off,” he said.

Mr Edwards claimed he had suffered a heart attack in recent months and his wife remains 'in poor health'.

He said the couple had been vilified and harassed by the public online in the months since the incident.

“A rock was thrown at our house, it bounced off the railing but could have smashed through a window,” he said.

Mr Edwards is a high-performance car enthusiast, often posing with racing vehicles and attending Supercars events such as the Bathurst 1000.

“Keyboard warriors have made all kinds of accusations – one said we keyed a Ford Mustang, which is insane – I fully support blue (Ford),” he said.

One car Edwards says he doesn't plan on getting behind the wheel of anytime soon is an electric car.

“Electric cars – I would never buy one, not that I could afford one,” he said.

“I would love to see a Tesla on fire on the side of the road.

“I got out and stood there and clapped.”

A Wheel of Fortune contestant was left devastated after failing to solve a simple puzzle and missing out on a BMW.

In a recent episode, the contestant named Tarhea won the game and chose the 'Food and Drink' category for her bonus round.

Tarhea was given the letters 'BAGELS & ___G_N_TS' and tried several times to find the missing letters.

The hopeful contestant started guessing as she said, “bagels and fritters,” then “bagels and croissants,” but failed to come up with the correct answer: “bagels and donuts.”

Host Pat Sajak then showed Tarhea that she had missed the BMW as she threw her head back and stomped her feet, visibly upset by her tremendous loss.

“You know a lot of stores don't spell it right anymore, and you probably did too, but there's a 'UGH' up there, I'm sorry,” Sajak told the contestant as she cried out.

Although she didn't win the bonus round, Tarhea still managed to walk away with $25,898 from the game show.

Sajak then said that the BMW has been up for grabs for a week and that no entrant has won it. He said jokingly, “I think I understand. Isn't that the rule?'

Viewers took to

“She has a BMW over there and can't say bagels and donuts. I screamed at my damn TV, poor girl,” another posted.

'Are you serious? That was the easiest puzzle ever. I suck and I get it,” another person commented on YouTube.

Other commentators sympathized with Tarhea and chose not to attack her for her costly failure.

“I can never blame a participant for missing a puzzle that I easily solved from home,” said another on YouTube.

“It's entirely possible that if I were on national television in front of a studio audience, I would be tongue-tied and not have a working answer.”

Another said Sajak “had a point” when he said donuts are no longer spelled the same.

One positive response to X said: 'Every participant gets a turn, there is no need for negativity. Keep spinning!'

In another recent episode that aired in December, a contestant went viral for the “worst guess ever” when she was faced with a puzzle where the majority of the letters were already in front of her.

Gishma Tabari from New York was on the show when she was asked to solve a puzzle in the “showbiz” category and was given: “TH- -RITI-S_-GR-E.”

Tabari then guessed that the answer was: 'THE BRITISH OGRE', when it was 'THE CRITICS AGREE'.

“Why did I say it again?” Tabari thought to herself.

Before joining the show, Tabari was afraid of giving a “stupid” answer to one of the game's puzzles.

“The funny thing was, right before I went on, I went to my husband, Saman, and I thought…” My fear is that I'm going to go on the show and say or do something stupid that everyone will like. start laughing”. That's exactly what happened.” she said Fox news.

Tabari explained that she believes her gamble was simply a product of her creativity.

“I think it just came from my imagination. From the moment I got up there and saw the sign, that's what I saw. Now that I look at it, I think… it doesn't make any sense.”

Her response seemed to gain traction on social media as some users started mocking her.

'What? You've never heard of the British Ogre,” one user joked.

“This woman just guessed this puzzle as The British Ogre,” another user added. 'So many British Ogres in showbiz.'

“British Ogre sounds like a cool band name,” said one person.

“Honestly, I prefer THE BRITISH OGRE as the puzzles could use a little more crazy originality at times,” said another.

Responding to the comments she faced, Tabari said: “People generally don't know who I am. I have a degree, I'm working… I feel like I just had a rough moment on national television.”

Despite the online commotion and her terrible response, Tabari achieved her goal of actually being on the show she had been watching since she was five.

She still managed to walk away with a cash prize and a cruise to the Bahamas.

A family of three have been named killed when a BMW SUV crashed into customers in a beer garden, killing five people.

Mother Pratibha Sharma, 44, and her husband Jatin Chugh, 30, and Mrs Sharma’s daughter Anvi Sharma, 9, were named online as the family who died in the horror accident at 6.05pm on Sunday.

Ms Sharma, a mother and lawyer, was also an advocate against domestic violence and a dedicated member of the Sikh Indian community in Daylesford, who volunteered to deliver groceries to others.

Shell-shocked family friend Preet Singh told the Herald Sun he was struggling to come to terms with their losses.

“It’s incredibly shocking,” he said as he headed to her family’s home in Point Cook in Melbourne’s south-west.

‘I’m at a loss for words. I can’t really believe this.’

“Pratibha Sharma was a noble person who did a lot of great work for the community here,” one woman wrote on Facebook.

On Monday, Victoria Police released sad details about the tragedy, which included the death of an entire family – originally from Point Cook in Melbourne’s south-west – who were on a day out for the city’s unofficial Melbourne Cup long weekend .

A second family, from Tarneit, lost a 38-year-old father and his 11-year-old son in the tragedy. His wife, 36, and his second son, six, were injured, with the woman flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the boy taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital.

A third group of people – made up of a 38-year-old Kyneton woman, a 38-year-old Cockatoo man and an 11-month-old baby boy – were also injured. The baby’s mother, 38, was not injured.

It is understood two of the families were holidaying together in Daylesford, Nine News reported on Monday evening.

The driver, 66, from Mount Macedon, remains in hospital on Monday evening and is expected to be interviewed tomorrow.

The driver appeared to have been experiencing a medical episode at the time of the accident.

Victoria Police Chief Constable Shane Patton revealed earlier in the day that at least two of the groups hit by the car likely knew each other.

“It appears at this stage that it is two groups, two family groups who mainly know each other and who we believe are not from the Daylesford area,” he said.

‘But we are not in a position to really get much further with that.’

Witnesses say the white BMW

The hotel was busy with guests for the unofficial long weekend before Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup bank holiday, with families gathering near an ice cream parlor on the lawn.

The BMW then turned towards the road, collided with a lamppost and eventually came to a stop at a roundabout a few meters away from the hotel, on Howe Street.

The driver had no drugs or alcohol in his system at the time and has a full and unrestricted driver’s license.

A woman told Daily Mail Australia the driver appeared to have suffered a medical episode behind the wheel.

“It’s not like he was drugged, he had a seizure,” she explained, suggesting it could be diabetes.

The witness said: ‘It was just an explosion. Bodies were everywhere.”

Other witnesses said the driver appeared to struggle in his vehicle moments before pressing the accelerator and driving down a steep hill into the beer garden.

Victoria Police say they are still investigating the exact cause of the crash.

The man was later seen being put on a drip and was among the last to be taken to hospital.

“I just saw a family on the ground and I wanted to kill him,” the woman said. ‘I think he wiped out an entire family. I saw the little boy and it just broke my heart.”

On Monday, police said the victims belonged to two families who knew each other and were not locals but visitors “just going about their daily lives… on a beautiful sunny afternoon.”

Paramedics flew four patients to Melbourne for treatment, including one child.

The child was flown to the Royal Children’s Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Two adults were flown to Royal Melbourne Hospital and one adult was flown to Alfred Hospital, all with serious injuries.

Paramedics also took two patients to Ballarat and one patient to Royal Melbourne in serious but stable conditions.

Victoria Police confirmed the crash on social media on Sunday evening.

“Emergency services are currently at the scene of a fatal crash in Daylesford,” a police statement said.

The pub at the historic Royal Hotel in Daylesford will remain closed until Thursday.

During its debut, the German car company emphasized that its prism-shaped boat “encompasses a future-oriented form of luxury,” which designers in Los Angeles, Munich and Shanghai have been working on.

It said: ‘The innovative vessel appeals with its unique design and also offers passengers a totally new experience of mobility. Here, in the midst of an exclusive on-board ambience, excellent comfort meets a significantly reduced impact on the environment.’

With a speed of 55 km/h, the 13.15 m long Icon is said to be a ‘pioneer for a new type of personal watercraft’ that sets ‘new standards’ with its electrically powered system.

Until now, BMW claims that electric marine navigation has been limited to smaller and slower boats with a short range.

But an innovation known as hydrofoils has been implemented to help Icon achieve higher speeds while maintaining passenger comfort.

This mechanism allows the boat to travel on submerged wing structures while the hull floats above the surface of the water.

The technology was originally used in yacht racing and is said to reduce the Icon’s energy requirements by up to 80 percent compared to other vessels.

In the meantime, two 100 kW electric motors convert the energy of six batteries into a range of approximately 100 km, with an average operating speed of 27 mph.

This is controlled from the Icon’s command station, which is fitted with a classic BMW-style steering wheel.

The German company claims the Icon is “almost silent” while running too, with a lack of “vibration or shock” during the ride.

Still, BMW told MailOnline there was “no current information” on when this could hit the market – and at what price.

The group continued: “THE ICON impresses with a powerful propulsion system that produces neither noise nor emissions. Its foil technology allows it to reach high speeds without generating waves or trailing a wake. Indeed, the only thing THE ICON leaves behind on every trip is fun and joy.”

The days of shotguns in the front seat may soon be over thanks to BMW, which has taken rear-seat luxury to a new level in its high-tech £110,000 smart car.

MailOnline took a ride in the new, fully electric BMW i7, which has 5G connectivity, ambient lighting in the interior and a super-wide ‘theater screen’ in the back.

The 8K display, which measures 32 x 9 inches, flips out of the sunroof at the touch of a button and streams video from Netflix, YouTube and more.

BMW gave me a lift on my morning drive through west London – a welcome alternative to the cramped and temperamental subway.

The BMW i7 is a new electric variant of the BMW 7 Series, which has been in production at the German car manufacturer since 1977.

According to the company, the new car redefines luxury “with new levels of electrification, sustainability and digitization.”
