But 146 minutes later, Liverpool regained top spot with a 3-1 win over Burnley.

When asked if they could score a second Treble in a row this season, Haaland replied: “No, we won't.”

The goals were the Norwegian striker's first since November after he was sidelined with a foot injury.

After steering his team to a tenth consecutive victory in all competitions, the 23-year-old added: “It was good to be playing again and a great feeling to win.

“I've been practicing with my right foot, I should have scored one like that at Brentford, so it's showing improvement.

“We always work hard as a team, so a fantastic achievement. It was a good win.

“People will try to destroy our game, but we are a good team, we have had a good run, that's ten in a row.”

When asked what it was like to be injured, he said: “It was terrible. I really don't like it, but it makes you appreciate going to practice and getting a little nervous before the race.

“It makes your mind think a little differently.”

Liverpool's win at Anfield restored their two-point cushion, although Pep Guardiola's City still have a game in hand.

Head boss Jurgen Klopp was booked for dissent – along with Burnley chief Vincent Kompany – but claimed if the controversial blue sin-bin cards had been in use today it would have been 'the wild west'.

Klopp said: “It was definitely emotional.

“Imagine if the referee in this match had a blue card at his disposal? It would have been the wild west.

“There were so many yellow cards today. I had no idea why Vincent got his.

“I lost it so beautifully in that situation, give me a yellow card. As long as I don't get blue and have to sit somewhere for ten minutes!”

On the title race, he added: “It's every week. Add to that Tottenham, Aston Villa and Arsenal, they are obviously all in the mix.”

Ranchi: Udita Duhan capped her milestone 100th international appearance with a double goal that moved India closer to a ticket to Paris after the home side defeated Italy 5-1 to enter the semi-final of the FIH Olympic Qualification on Tuesday . Udita (1st minute, 55th), Deepika (41st), Salima Tete (45th) and Navneet Kaur (53rd) were the scorers for the Indian team as it finished second in Pool B with two wins from three matches behind the United States, who were left undefeated.

India will take on Pool A toppers Germany in the semi-finals on Thursday, while the US will take on Japan. The three best teams qualify for the Olympic Games in Paris. It was another good showing from the Indians after the 0-1 loss to USA in their opener, controlling the proceedings from start to finish. Udita was very strong at the back, while the little Neha Goyal and Salima were in charge in midfield.

It was a perfect start for India, as just like in the previous match, the home team took the lead in the first minute. India picked up where they left off and played high-press and attacked hockey from the start.

A few seconds after the match, Sangita Kumari forced Italian goalkeeper Lucia Ines Caruso into an excellent save.

Sangita's reverse strike from the top of the circle was cleared by a fully extended Caruso, but from the resulting strike India secured their first penalty corner.

And Udita was accurately on target with a perfectly executed slap shot, giving the hosts an early lead.

Italy had a chance to draw when they were awarded their first penalty corner just 50 seconds before the end of the first quarter, but in turn it was India who were countered.

Sonika made a brilliant run from the left and dribbled past a few defenders to pass the ball to Beauty Dung Dung, whose close-range effort was stopped by Caruso. Two minutes into the second quarter, Sangita earned India's second penalty corner, but this time Udita's was kept at bay by the Italian defense. The Indian defenders had another good day in office as they didn't put a foot wrong to deny Italy an open chance.

The backline led by captain and goalkeeper Savita Punia was faultless in the first two quarters, eliminating loose balls inside their own striking circle as the Italians failed to get a clear shot on target.

Three minutes after the change of ends, Salima Tete and Lalremsiami combined well from the right flank to provide a beautiful ball for Jyoti inside the circle, who failed to get a good connection.

India soon secured their third penalty corner, but Monika failed to stop Salima's attack. Lurking in front of the Italian circle, an opportunistic Lalremsiami pounced on a loose ball and earned a penalty for India after being brought down by goalkeeper Caruso. Deepika rose and made no mistake from the spot to give India a 2-0 lead.

Salima extended the lead just 50 seconds into the third quarter, firing from the right corner past Caruso into the top of the Italian net. Seven minutes after the final whistle, Navneet made the score 4-0, effectively crushing Italy's hopes of recovery. She did the kicking past five Italian defenders who cut in from the right flank for an opportunistic attack.

Minutes later, Italy created back-to-back penalty corners but could not get past Savita in front of the Indian goal. Udita played a great game and she made the match memorable by converting another penalty corner two minutes later, allowing India to complete a convincing win. Italy got a consolation goal just before the final whistle when Camila Machin converted a penalty corner.

Sweden’s civil defence minister has warned his country could soon face the prospect of war and urged citizens to join voluntary defence organisations in preparation for a potential armed conflict.

In a rousing speech that took note of his country’s hotly-anticipated accession to NATO this year and ongoing Russian aggression in Ukraine, Carl-Oskar Bohlin called on ordinary citizens to ask themselves ‘who are you if war comes?’.

Speaking at Sweden’s annual ‘Folk och Försvar’ (Society and Defence) conference in Sälen this past weekend, the minister said: ‘It is human to want to view life as you wish it was, rather than as it actually is.

‘For a nation for whom peace has been a pleasant companion for almost 210 years, the idea that it is an immovable constant is conveniently close at hand. But taking comfort in this conclusion has become more dangerous than it has been for a very long time.

‘There could be war in Sweden… The world is facing a security outlook with greater risks than at any time since the end of the Second World War.

‘Are you a private individual? Have you considered whether you have time to join a voluntary defence organisation? If not: get moving!’ he declared.

It comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Vladimir Putin would not stop at Ukraine and will attack other neighbours unless allies joined forces to stop him.

‘He (Putin) won’t finish this (war), until we all finish him together,’ Zelensky said during a news conference in Vilnius, adding ‘Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Moldova may be next’ if Ukraine did not withstand Russia.

Bohlin did not claim that the prospect of war is imminent in Sweden in his weekend speech.

But he stressed the current state of the world and rising tensions between East and West necessitated a response at all levels to ensure Swedish society would be prepared for any future conflict.

Using Ukraine’s valiant and effective defence of Kyiv in the early days of the war in March 2022 as an example, Bohlin said his nation must fast-track its efforts to bring about civil preparedness and become a war-ready society.

‘Putin didn’t understand that he was kicking down that door within every Ukrainian in 2014. By the time of the full-scale invasion in February 2022, the Ukrainian people had – individually and collectively – been formulating their response…

‘The Russian attacking forces faced the unified force of the entire Ukrainian society. This kind of effort can only come about quickly enough if the vast majority are aware of the situation and understand what is at stake.

‘Societal resilience requires exactly that: situational awareness… Awareness must be translated into practical action. Measures that actually raise the threshold.

‘Everyone has to understand that in the situation we find ourselves in, time may be our most precious non-renewable resource. If there is one thing that keeps me awake at night, it is the feeling that things are moving too slowly,’ he said.

Bohlin went on to directly address everyone from local government officials to individual citizens and encouraged them to take steps to prepare themselves.

”I don’t know what I’m supposed to do!”, I sometimes hear. Let me respond with a few questions.

‘Are you a senior official in an emergency preparedness authority? Good, then have you built your war organisation and defined which activities need to be maintained and which do not? Have you ensured compliance with protective security and necessary access to alternative command locations?

‘Are you a municipal commissioner? Good, then have you secured the war organisation, refuge points, the emergency water plan and the redundancy supply of foodstuffs, heating and electricity for health and social care?

‘Are you an employee? Good, then have you asked your employer what your role would be in your workplace’s war organisation?

‘Are you a private individual? Good, then have you taken responsibility for your home preparedness? Have you considered whether you have time to join a voluntary defence organisation?’

Each address was ended with a simple call to action – ‘get moving!’.

Swedish Defence Minister Pål Jonson issued a similar warning to that of Bohlin on Monday, arguing that conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East showed that 'the world has become more dangerous than it was just a year ago'

‘If you haven’t started, you are behind – if you don’t know how, you can either ask someone who has started, or get answers from the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency. It’s as simple as that,’ Bohlin concluded.

Swedish Defence Minister Pål Jonson issued a similar warning on Monday, arguing that conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East showed that ‘the world has become more dangerous than it was just a year ago’.

‘An armed attack against Sweden cannot be ruled out,’ Jonson said.

‘War can also come to us. These serious times require clarity of vision, capacity to act and persistence – clarity of vision to understand that Russia’s goal remains the eradication of a free Ukraine and creation of a Europe in which ”might is right” with buffer states and spheres of interest.’

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine prompted Sweden and Finland, two states who had remained neutral for decades, to submit applications to join NATO.

But Turkey, a member of the security bloc, has delayed ratifying Sweden’s application for more than a year, accusing the country of being too lenient toward groups that Ankara regards as threats to its security, including Kurdish militants and members of a network that Ankara blames for a failed coup in 2016.

However, Turkey’s foreign affairs committee in December finally gave its consent to Sweden’s bid to join NATO, drawing the Nordic country closer to membership in the Western military alliance.

Sweden’s accession protocol will now need to be approved in the general assembly for the last stage of the legislative process in Turkey.

Though no date has been set, it is expected to be approved within a matter of weeks.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan should then sign it into law, concluding a process that frustrated some of Ankara’s allies and tested its Western ties.

Turkish lawmakers said that Stockholm needed to take further steps to clamp down on the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), an armed group that has been designated a ‘terrorist organisation’ by Turkey, the EU and the US.

Some members fled Turkish persecution in the late 1980s and subsequent crises in the Middle East.

Sweden extradited a Kurdish refugee to Turkey in December, amid pressure to meet demands in return for NATO membership.

Erdogan last month linked ratification of Sweden’s NATO membership to the US Congress’ approval of a Turkish request to purchase 40 new F-16 fighter jets and kits to modernise Turkey’s existing fleet.

While NATO member Hungary has also not ratified Sweden’s membership, Turkey is seen as the main roadblock to adding the Scandinavian nation to the military alliance and bolstering its defences in the Baltic Sea region.

Meanwhile, Zelensky today landed in Lithuania as part of an unannounced trip to the Baltic states to drum up more support for the conflict.

The three Baltic states – all former Soviet republics which are now EU and NATO members – are among Ukraine’s staunchest allies.

‘Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania are our reliable friends and principled partners. Today, I arrived in Vilnius before going to Tallinn and Riga,’ Zelensky said on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

‘Security, EU and NATO integration, cooperation on electronic warfare and drones, and further coordination of European support are all on the agenda,’ he said.

The Baltic tour marks Zelensky’s first official trip abroad this year.

In Lithuania, a key donor to Ukraine, Zelensky will hold talks with the president, prime minister and the speaker of parliament, and meet with the Ukrainian community.

The visit comes as other Kyiv allies waver on fresh aid, nearly two years into Russia’s invasion.

Ukraine has come under intense Russian shelling in recent weeks, retaliating with strikes on Russia’s border city of Belgorod.

Zelensky has urged allies to keep military support flowing and held in-person talks with officials from the United States, Germany and Norway last month.

But an EU aid package worth 50 billion euros ($55 billion) has been stuck in Brussels following a veto by Hungary, while the US Congress remains divided on sending additional aid to Ukraine.

Bhubaneswar: East Bengal rode on the support of Cleiton Silva to start their Super Cup football campaign with a fighting 3-2 win over Hyderabad FC at the Kalinga Stadium on Tuesday. The Group A match saw Hyderabad draw twice through Ramhlunchhunga and Nim Dorjee Tamang before Saul Crespo scored the winning goal for East Bengal in the 80th minute.

East Bengal are struggling to score goals this season. But on this day, Silva led from the front as they tried to attack from the start. The first big chance came in the eighth minute when Nishu Kumar delivered a cross from the left flank.

Silva managed to head the ball to Nandhakumar, creating a perfect volley chance. However, Nandhakumar’s shot hit the crossbar. East Bengal broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute. The move was initiated by Mohamad Rakip, who played a quick one-two with Nandhakumar on the right flank, before delivering an accurate cross into the box that evaded all the Hyderabad defenders.

Silva made a timely run into the box and smashed the ball home to give East Bengal the lead. Hyderabad FC restored parity in the 45th minute. Mohammad Rafi played a beautiful through ball to Lalchhanhima Sailo on the right flank.

Sailo traced the ball with great awareness and found Ramhlunchhunga unmarked in the penalty area, and he calmly steered the ball into the bottom corner of the net. However, East Bengal were undeterred by Hyderabad’s equalizer and started the second half with the same attacking attitude.

Silva remained a key figure in East Bengal’s attacking efforts, making another significant impact in the 54th minute. He showed his skill and precision by scoring with a beautiful curling free-kick from 30 yards, putting East Bengal ahead again.

Hyderabad again fought their way back into the match in the 79th minute when Makan Chote played a square pass to Ramhlunchhunga in the box. Ramhlunchhunga tried to go past Souvik Chakrabarti before the East Bengal defender decided to foul him. Referee Harish Kundu immediately pointed to the spot and Tamang converted the penalty to help Hyderabad draw level.

However, East Bengal found their hero in Crespo, who came on as a substitute at the start of the second half. Borja Herrera floated in a corner from the left and an unmarked Crespo easily headed in the winner to give East Bengal three crucial points.

Australia’s east coast is set to be battered by new downpours which could last for weeks – as medical experts warn the deluge could trigger deadly outbreaks of weather-related diseases.

Victorians are being told to batten down the hatches, with summer thunderstorms threatening to dump mammoth rainfall totals and cause widespread flooding on Sunday and Monday.

But weathermen are warning Queensland’s non-stop rain could carry on for weeks, as meteorologists dismiss the ‘misconception’ an El Nino summer means a drought.

Now medical chiefs are warning of the dangers of mosquito-borne diseases like Ross River Fever and Japanese Encephalitis which could explode in the soggy conditions.

South Australia chief health officer Nicola Spurrier sounded the alarm on Saturday when she told Aussies to brace for outbreaks and watch for potential symptoms.

‘Fever and chills perhaps to start with, but then getting a very severe headache and then going on to confusion and sometimes seizures – and then maybe even unconsciousness if it’s very severe,’ she said.

‘It doesn’t matter where you are – if you get bitten by a mosquito, that mosquito could be carrying one of these diseases, and some of those are potentially fatal.’

Sky News meteorologist Alison Osborne said there was a ‘high chance of above-average rain through northeastern and eastern Australia’ before the conditions begin to dry out in February.

She said the ‘spiteful’ positive Southern Annular Mode (SAM) – a ring of westerly winds that hug Antarctica – was promoting easterly winds and driving rains across Australia’s east coast.

‘That is pretty difficult to predict in advance beyond a couple of weeks, but at the moment that has been a big driver of the rain and storm events through eastern Australia in particular,’ she said.

‘That thing has been wobbling positive since early December, and it’s likely to remain that way for at least the next two weeks.’

Ms Osborne’s warning of a wet January rings true for this weekend.

The Bureau of Meteorology forecasts ‘lingering’ wet weather that will develop on the weekend and into next week.

On Saturday, a low pressure system will develop in South Australia, with the associated rain band, and potential thunderstorms, reaching Adelaide by the late afternoon.

From Sunday, the system is forecast to reach western NSW, southwestern Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania.

The bureau’s senior meteorologist Angus Hines said widespread rainfall would hit areas of Tasmania, Victoria and ‘most of’ NSW.

‘When you combine the wet weather in the east and the south with the daily storms in the north, (you’ll be) pretty hard pressed to find parts of central and eastern Australia that have a dry three-day stretch ahead,’ he said.

‘Most of the country is lining up for some form of wet weather.’

The wet weather prediction comes despite an El Nino alert, which has been active since September.

However, Ms Osborne said it was a ‘very commonly held misconception’ that El Nino meant reduced rainfall in the summer months.

‘The influence of rain from El Nino from November onwards is pretty marginal through eastern Australia,’ she said.

In comparison, an La Nina alert was a stronger influence on rainfall patterns, leading to higher levels of precipitation and lower temperatures.

However from February, the moisture is predicted to dissipate, bringing ‘quite a high chance of above-average temperatures and quite a decent chance of temperature extremes through the northern tropics and the northwest’.

While the temperatures might not be as dramatic in areas across southeast NSW, Canberra and southern Queensland, Ms Osborne said ‘everywhere else is skewing normal or unusually warm’.

The threat of bushfires could also ramp up, as drier conditions take hold in February.

While the immediate threat is hampered for a time after it rains, with Ms Osborne noting ‘it’s pretty hard to light a wet match’, the rain could also encourage new vegetation growth that could promote fires once the heat and dry conditions return.

‘If there is a swing back to drier-than-average conditions, combined with high heat, then that can change things quick quickly,’ she said.

While the sun was shining in Victoria on Saturday, Emergency Management Commissioner Rick Nugent warned the state was set for a major rain event on Sunday and Monday.

‘We’ll most likely receive totals of around 150mm of rain but we could receive upwards of 200mm of rain across the state,’ he told reporters.

Emergency authorities are preparing for the worst-case rain scenario and have urged Victorians to do the same, particularly if they live in flood-prone areas.

‘Especially people staying in caravan parks and camping along creeks and along waterways,’ Mr Nugent said.

He said many of the state’s rivers and creeks were already quite full from recent rain, making it highly likely the forecast storms could lead to flash flooding in those areas.

‘Falling tree branches and flash floods are the highest risk, and please don’t drive through floodwaters – you’re driving a car, not a boat,’ Mr Nugent said.

‘We don’t want emergency service personnel having to rescue people during this event.’

Thunderstorms are expected to develop in Victoria’s west on Sunday morning, before moving through central, north central and eastern parts of the state during the day and into Monday.

‘It’s not just a one-day event,’ Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Michael Efron said.

He said the low-pressure trough would initially produce widespread rain and thunderstorm activity in the Mallee and Wimmera districts.

Some areas could be set for up to 60mm of rain in less than an hour, he said.

Widespread rainfall totals could be as high as 150mm in central and northern parts of the state, and up to 200mm in the north and northeast.

A warning for minor to moderate flooding has been issued for more than a dozen catchments.

‘The amount of moisture across the state at the moment is incredible,’ Mr Efron said.

‘It’s what you would normally see in somewhere like Queensland.’

In September, the bureau officially declared an El Nino climate pattern, which typically delivers drier conditions for much of the country.

Mr Efron explained other climate factors were influencing the current spate of storms across eastern Australia, including the Southern Annular Mode and above-average sea surface temperatures in the Tasman Sea.

‘Those easterly winds are bringing that humid air across Victoria,’ he said.

‘Everyone would have noticed the humidity, and I think we’re likely to see that continuing through the rest of this month.’

The flooding risk is said to be highest to the state’s north but metropolitan Melbourne could face the same threat between midnight on Sunday and midday on Monday

Victoria State Emergency Service chief operations officer Tim Wiebusch said storm fronts with a ‘tropical moisture link’ often spelled flash flooding and subsequent riverine flooding.

Mr Wiebusch said the flooding risk was highest to the state’s north but metropolitan Melbourne could face the same threat between midnight on Sunday and midday on Monday.

‘We’re asking Victorians to get prepared now,’ he said.

‘If you’re staying or holidaying in the northeast of the state, or the Loddon or Avoca areas, we would ask you to pay attention to the emergency warnings.

‘We’ve already seen 20 flood rescues from the start of 2024 – that’s 20 too many.’

SES crews will establish sandbag collection points at high-risk locations such as Bendigo, Castlemaine, Campbells Creek, Heathcote and Wedderburn from Sunday.

Mr Wiebusch said more sandbag sites would be set up.

LawConnect has emerged first from the Heads in an exciting and dramatic start to the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race on Boxing Day.

Rival supermaxi yachts SHK Scallywag and Andoo Comanche followed in that order as light winds made for a challenging start to the 628 nautical mile blue-water classic.

The drama unfolded when Comanche flew a protest flag and accused Scallywag of tacking too close to her as the pair made their way out.

If Comanche goes through with the protest, Scallywag will have to complete a penalty turn of 720 or risk being disqualified from a line honors win on arrival in Hobart.

After scattered showers disappeared just before the 1 p.m. starting signal, LawConnect was the fastest on its way.

The yacht Scallywag (pictured) was the subject of a protest from the Comanche, who accused his rival vessel of tacking too close to her at the start of the race on Boxing Day.

But when she had a problem furling a sail just after the first marker out of the Heads, she turned towards the spectator fleet and fell behind Scallywag and Comanche.

LawConnect made the most of a change in the wind and started the journey up the NSW coast as the frontrunner.

Two-handed Currawong, the smallest boat in the fleet at 9.1 metres, finished last out of the Heads.

Sailors are wary of the danger posed by forecast thunderstorms, hail and gale-force winds during this year’s race.

Widely regarded as one of the most challenging yacht races in the world, the event follows the east coast of Australia south from Sydney, crossing the Bass Strait, before continuing along the east coast of Tasmania, eventually reaching Hobart.

The Bureau of Meteorology, whose representatives briefed competitors ahead of the race, said there was a high degree of uncertainty over forecasts for the coming days.

“A trough and low pressure system over eastern Australia is slowly moving south-east and will reach the Tasman Sea later today or tomorrow,” an agency spokesperson said.

‘Uncertainty remains as to its exact placement. Weather, wind and wave forecasts will depend on the location of this system.”

At the start of the race, participants were prepared for light easterly winds, the agency said, with a chance of showers or thunderstorms.

“The potential for thunderstorms increases along the NSW coast and over Sydney during the afternoon – with very erratic winds, hail, lightning and heavy rain potentially reducing visibility,” the agency said.

“There are likely to be strong wind warnings during the race, and there is a small risk of local gale force winds over Bass Strait on Tuesday evening.”

‘Rain and thunderstorms are forecast throughout the race, mainly along the NSW coast and across Bass Strait, but are likely to be more active and widespread on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The field did not face high winds at the start of the race, but this is expected to change, with wild weather forecast as the field winds its way along the coast towards Bass Strait.

The field did not face high winds at the start of the race, but this is expected to change, with wild weather forecast as the field winds its way along the coast towards Bass Strait.

“These can reduce visibility, cause lightning, erratic winds and possibly even some hail.”

With Bass Strait often being the toughest part of the race, teams can expect bigger south-westerly swells and strong winds.

‘This year, easterly winds and easterly swells are forecast, as well as thunderstorms, making conditions challenging on Tuesday and Wednesday. These conditions are expected to ease from later Wednesday,” the agency said.

About 113 ships will participate in the event this year.

The record for the race was set in 2017 by the LDV Comanche, a 30-metre maxi yacht, which completed the event in just over 33 hours.

Tropical Cyclone Jasper will batter Queensland’s tourist towns on Wednesday as it slams into the mainland, bringing devastating winds of more than 160km/h.

Category 2 Jasper has been dubbed a ‘Zombie Storm’ by forecasters after it briefly weakened in strength before suddenly increasing in strength as it approached Australia.

The ship is expected to come ashore on Wednesday at 1 p.m half a meter of rain, damaging winds and a dangerous storm surge.

At least 15,000 homes in Cairns are at risk of flooding from storm surges, while Port Douglas has also been named a possible storm surge ‘red zone’.

Here’s what to expect in a category two cyclone

High winds: Average winds ranging from 89 to 117 km/h, accompanied by gusts of 125-164 km/h.

Possible damage: Minor damage to houses and significant damage to signs, trees, caravans and certain crops.

Risk of power outages: There is a risk of power outages due to the impact of the cyclone.

A storm surge or tide occurs when coastal waters rise above high tide level due to a cyclone, causing ‘tsunami-like waves’ to move inland.

The storm could even become a category three system by the time it crosses the coast, the Bureau of Meteorology warned.

“If the system is slower and crosses Wednesday evening or early Thursday morning, there is a small chance it will intensify to Category 3 before crossing,” an agency spokesperson said.

Jasper is expected to continue heading towards the state’s north coast for the remainder of Tuesday into Wednesday morning, before making landfall somewhere between Cooktown and Cairns on Wednesday around 1pm.

“Forecast models suggest Jasper will make landfall as a Category 2 system, bringing heavy rainfall, damaging winds and a storm surge as it crosses the coast,” said Weatherzone’s Ben Domensino.

Rain should increase along the northern tropical coast and the Tablelands from Wednesday morning, extending further inland across the Cape York Peninsula on Wednesday and Thursday.

The storm could bring a total of 400 to 500 mm of rainfall per 24 hours, with six-hour rains reaching around 300 mm in some areas.

Damaging winds could develop between Cape Flattery and Lucinda as the storm approaches and crosses the coast on Wednesday.

The strongest winds are likely to occur between Wujal Wujal and Innisfail, including Cairns.

Strong onshore winds combined with low atmospheric pressure will cause dangerous storm surges around high tide on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Evacuation centers have been set up across the region, with Deputy Prime Minister Steven Miles warning of a significant risk of flash flooding when Jasper makes landfall.

“It will then spread across the Cape and affect some of the most vulnerable communities in Queensland,” he said.

Swiftwater rescue teams and additional police and force crews have been sent to the north of the state in anticipation of the wild weather.

Cairns hospital is also vulnerable, prompting plans to sandbag the facility and cancel its planned operation on Wednesday to free up beds.

A nearby elderly care facility may also be evacuated.

Cairns Airport remains operational, but a number of airlines have indicated that there will be schedule changes or flight cancellations.

Cairns District Acting Chief Disaster Inspector Sonia Smith has urged holidaymakers to travel north.

She urged motorists to stay aware of road closures and flash flood warnings.

Johnny Depp wears a leg brace as he arrives in Berlin ahead of a gig with rock band Hollywood Vampires – after postponing the tour due to an ankle injury

Johnny Depp was seen wearing a leg brace when he arrived in Berlin on Wednesday ahead of his show with his band Hollywood Vampires at the Citadel Music Festival.

The actor, 60, who stars in the rock group alongside Aerosmith’s Alice Cooper and Joe Perry, recently postponed the US leg of their tour due to his injury.

Johnny wore a knit hat with a graphic printed jacket and black cargo pants as he strolled around town.

He was joined by an unknown friend as he continued his European tour after their appearances in Munich and Hamburg.

After spraining his ankle while promoting his movie, Jeanne Du Barry, at the Cannes Film Festival, a source revealed to TMZ that the star “emphasized it further while trying to get through” at a tribute show for his late friend Jeff Beck.

Earlier this month, the band announced they would be postponing the US leg of their tour due to Johnny’s injury.

An insider told TMZ that the actor has broken his ankle and his medical team has ordered him not to fly for the foreseeable future.

It meant he was unable to perform with Hollywood Vampires’ in New Hampshire, Massachusetts and New York.

Shortly after the cancellations, Depp and his bandmates, Alice Cooper and Joe Perry, confirmed the news that they will have to reschedule their first three US tour dates on their Instagram account.

“We are sorry to inform you that the Hollywood Vampires will be rescheduling our three US tour dates this week,” the band revealed in their post.

They continued: ‘Johnny has suffered a painful ankle injury following his recent performances and has been advised by his doctor not to travel.’

“He is devastated by this turn of events, but is looking forward to resting so that all four Vampires can give their very best on tour in Europe,” the group continued.

Johnny, Alice and Joe formed the Hollywood Vampires in 2012, initially performing covers in honor of rock stars who died in the 1970s.

Johnny previously toured with Beck and recorded an album with the legendary guitarist, who passed away at age 78 after contracting bacterial meningitis.

The pair created a 13-song collection, featuring two new Depp originals and an eclectic mix of covers ranging from iconic artists like the Beach Boys, Marvin Gaye and John Lennon to alternative rockers like Killing Joke and The Velvet Underground.

“When Johnny and I started playing together, it really sparked our youthful spirit and creativity. We joked about how we felt 18 again so that became the album title too,” Beck, 77, said in a statement about the album, as reported by Billboard.

In keeping with their fond teenage memories sparked by the music, the two artists decided to use an illustration of themselves as an 18-year-old drawn by Beck’s wife Sandra for the album cover.

F1 23 (Playstation, Xbox, PC, £69.99)

Verdict: Go ahead

Judgement: *****

It’s time to crown a new world champion. Not from Formula 1 – although to be honest I wouldn’t mind if Max Verstappen was dropped – but from sports games. And that world champion is F1 23.

What makes it so good? Partly it is Polish. Being the official video game of Formula 1, it has glossy renditions of everything in the sport: the drivers, the tracks, the pundits, the theme song.

It’s a true racing fan’s dream. Other sports games, such as the FIFA series, have shine, but F1 23 also has hardwood quality.

The racing itself is immensely satisfying, whether you play the game (as I was inept) on the easier settings and just whiz past Hamilton and Leclerc, or whether you max out the difficulty and treat it as (I’m reliably informed) a remarkable accurate simulation of Formula 1 itself.

There’s also quality in the narrative mode – Braking Point – which returns from F1 21 after a year’s absence. This continues the storytelling of previous characters while adding a new rookie in the form of wife-in-a-conceited-man sports Callie Mayer.

Braking Point is full of sports movie clichés – ups, downs, betrayals, hard-won triumphs – but, god, it’s done right.

With these annually released titles, the question is always whether they really differ from what has happened before. And maybe F1 23 is just incrementally different from F1’s 21 and 22.

But it’s often incremental improvements that lead to podiums – and more. We finally have a new world champion.
