Catherine, Princess of Wales, has been diagnosed with cancer and has started chemotherapy, she announced on Friday. She provided a grim coda to months of rumors about her condition, plunging the British royal family into deep uncertainty as two of its most senior figures grapple with serious problems. health issues.

Her diagnosis follows that of King Charles III, who announced his own cancer diagnosis and treatment in early February. Like the king, Catherine, 42, did not specify what type of cancer she had nor what her prognosis was.

In a pre-recorded video released on Friday evening, Catherine said: “It’s been an incredibly tough few months for our whole family,” as she described having major abdominal surgery in January and then discovering through subsequent tests that she had a form had cancer. .

Catherine, 42, who looked tired but determined to express hope for her recovery, said she and her husband, Prince William, were helping their three children, George, Charlotte and Louis, cope with having a sick mother.

“This obviously came as a huge shock,” said Catherine, “and William and I have done everything we can to process and manage this privately, for the sake of our young family. You can imagine that this took time.”

“We hope you understand that as a family we now need some time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment,” said Catherine, who wore a simple striped sweater and sat on a bench against the backdrop of early spring. flowers, in the video, which was shot by BBC Studios on Wednesday.

Catherine’s announcement came with a thunderclap in a country where popular members of the royal family – and Catherine is certainly one – are still sometimes treated like members of any British family. It provoked an outpouring of sympathy from public figures and ordinary people, for many of whom Catherine symbolizes the future of the royal family – a glamorous yet recognizable figure, born outside the monarchy, who became a princess and mother in the unforgiving gaze of the audience. .

The announcement also put an end, at least for now, to the flood of rumors and conspiracy theories circulating on social media and the news media about Catherine’s condition and even whereabouts. But like Charles, Catherine’s announcement left many questions unanswered.

Palace officials did not provide details about the type of cancer, how far it had progressed or how long she would receive chemotherapy. A spokesperson said she had started treatment at the end of February and was on a “path to recovery”. Officials asked the news media not to speculate about her condition, in a perhaps futile effort to avoid another round of questions.

But any expectation that Catherine would resume her official duties after Easter, as the palace once said, seemed to have disappeared. A palace official said it would not share any further personal medical information about Catherine, adding that the princess was entitled to medical privacy, “as we all do.”

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak wished Catherine well and pointed the finger at those fueling rumors about her.

“She has been subjected to intense scrutiny and unfair treatment by certain sections of the media around the world and on social media,” said Mr Sunak about X. “When it comes to health issues, she, like everyone else, should be given the privacy to focus on her treatment and be with her loving family.”

For the royal family, Catherine’s cancer is another major blow, sidelining one of its most visible figures at a time when its ranks were already depleted. In addition to Charles, who has canceled public appearances to undergo his treatment, the family has been adjusting to the loss of Queen Elizabeth II, who died in 2022; the departure of Prince Harry and his wife Meghan; and the exile of Prince Andrew, disgraced by his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Harry and Meghan released a statement saying they wished “health and healing for Kate and the family, and hope they can do this privately and in peace.”

Buckingham Palace said Charles was “so proud of Catherine for her courage to speak as she did.” The palace noted that the king had visited her while they were both being treated in a London hospital and said Charles “has remained in closest contact with his beloved daughter-in-law in recent weeks.”

Catherine offered a timeline of her medical treatment that was eerily similar to that of her father-in-law. At the time her surgery was performed, doctors believed her condition was non-cancerous. The surgery was successful, she said, but on further tests the doctor found evidence of cancer. They recommended chemotherapy, which she said she had recently started.

The palace said the king’s cancer was discovered following a procedure for an enlarged prostate. While the palace has said he does not have prostate cancer, it has not specified what type of cancer it is or what his prognosis is.

Until Catherine’s video, Kensington Palace, where William and Catherine have their offices, had released even fewer details about her condition, an information vacuum that has contributed to a series of rumors and conspiracy theories on social media.

British newspapers have found themselves in a difficult position as courts have ruled that the right to privacy extends to members of the royal family. The Editors’ Code of Practice, under which much of the UK press operates, protects all individuals from unwarranted intrusion on matters of physical and mental health.

Catherine suggested that the family needed a zone of privacy where she could come to terms with her situation and explain it to her children. The announcement was timed for Friday, a palace official said, because the children had just started their Easter break from school and would not have to deal with the media frenzy — or, presumably, endure questions about their mother from classmates .

“It took me time to recover from major surgery before I could start my treatment,” Catherine said. “But most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that suits them, and to reassure them that I will be fine.”

“As I told them,” she continued, “I am doing well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal; in my mind, body and spirit.”

Rumors about Catherine’s health quickly began to circulate after Kensington Palace announced in January that she would go to the London Clinic, a private hospital, for abdominal surgery and stay there for ten to fourteen days. There were no photos of her children entering or leaving the hospital to visit their mother, and only a single photo of William, behind the wheel of a car, leaving the hospital.

Four weeks after Catherine’s release, William abruptly withdrew from a memorial service for his godfather, King Constantine of Greece, citing a “personal matter,” which accelerated speculation about Catherine on social media.

On Mother’s Day in Britain, Kensington Palace published a photo of Catherine with her three children, taken by William. The aim was to quell speculation about her, but the photo sparked a new round of conspiracy theories after The Associated Press and other news agencies reported that the photo had been digitally altered.

Catherine apologized for the editing, which she said she was responsible for, and attributed it to an amateur photographer’s innocent desire to improve the image. But it raised questions about the way the royal family communicates with the public: Catherine has photographed many members of the royal family in private settings, and those photos have often been published by British newspapers.

This week, video emerged of William and Catherine walking out of a grocery store near their home in Windsor. The palace, as it has done throughout this period, refused to confirm the images, leading to further speculation.

Despite all the questions left unanswered, royal watchers said Catherine’s video on Friday was a step in the right direction.

“The video message is a welcome intervention and will hopefully do much to dispel the wild rumors and speculation of the past three weeks,” said Ed Owens, a royal historian. “Such transparency is what we need from the royal family if we want to ensure public trust is maintained.”

When Barbara Hulanicki, born in Warsaw in 1936, founded Biba with her husband Stephen Fitz-Simon in 1964, the pair quickly set London’s fashion scene, which the designer described as ‘so grey’, on fire.

Now a new exhibition, The Biba Story: 1964-1975 at London’s Fashion & Textiles Museum, will introduce one of Britain’s most famous brands to a whole new audience.

Although Hulanicki, now 87 and living in Miami, closed its doors in 1976, the brand has lived on independently of her, most recently as a franchise owned by the beleaguered House of Fraser brand.

Hulanicki’s original designs are also enjoying a second life, decades after they graced the shelves of the original store on Abingdon Road in upmarket Kensington.

An original 1970s Biba knitted waistcoat, with label, is currently on sale for £200 on vintage clothing website shopcurious.com.

On the much-loved site Vinted, a Biba 18kt gold onyx ring currently costs £1,495, while a pair of rare original Biba raspberry pink suede leather shoes from 1973 can be found on eBay for £145.

A new exhibition The Biba Story: 1964-1975 has opened at London’s Fashion & Textiles Museum. Designer Barbara Hulanicki, 87, who opened her first store in 1964, and Twiggy, 74, who modeled for the brand, pictured at the exhibition opening this week

The brand’s fans included anyone who was anyone at the time in the 1960s, with Twiggy, the Rolling Stones, Cilla Black and Marianne Faithfull all regulars at the Kensington store.

Twiggy, now 74, who rose to fame as a 1960s model, became the face of the label and was at Hulanicki’s side at the exhibition launch this week.

The two women were joined by other fashion icons, including Anna Sui and Dame Zandra Rhodes. Hulanicki’s husband, Fitz-Simon, died in 1997 and the fashion designer has remained single ever since.

Long considered one of the original supermodels, Twiggy first rose to prominence with her piercing blue eyes and beautiful bone structure.

Last year the model, married to Leigh Lawson, revealed how other designers came and went, but she always loved Hulanicki’s clothes.

She said Fashion: ‘Honestly, my heart has always belonged to Biba. By then I had become friends with creator Barbara Hulanicki, who remains my style icon. Every time she designed a collection, she sent one of everything in a taxi. Heaven.

‘I wore her pieces with clothes I found at Kensington Market: brightly colored velvet trousers and Afghan coats that smelled awful when it rained. Ah, the things we do for fashion. It will never change.’

The brand closed in 1976... but other companies, including House of Fraser, have since relaunched it, without Hulanicki's involvement.

The brand closed in 1976… but other companies, including House of Fraser, have since relaunched it, without Hulanicki’s involvement.

The brand actually started as a mail order company in 1963. Things slowly evolved until 1964, when Hulanicki created a pink gingham dress that cost 25 shillings.

It was advertised in the Daily Mirror and received 4,000 orders within 24 hours. In 1973 Biba sold clothing, furniture and cosmetics. (In 1974 it had a turnover of £1 million. Only in sales of make-up. Only in Japan.)

The brand’s success has seen it move into a bold new space, in a seven-storey store in an art deco building on High Street Kensington.

A mix of Art Nouveau decor and rock ‘n’ roll decadence, it was more than a retail space: it was the city’s hippest meeting place.

The store sold everything from lipstick to dog food; had a roof garden; and even had a playground full of a carousel; and a rainbow-colored restaurant that took in 1,200 covers per day.

The brand expanded beyond dresses to include shoes, jewelry and hats

“The louder the music played, the faster the girls moved and more people showed up in the store,” Hulanicki later recalled, whose brown pinstripe dresses, glittery skirts and figure-hugging clothes in earthy colors sold like hotcakes.

As post-war austerity began to ease and more and more women enjoyed independent lives and jobs, the brand’s makeup range became a fashion product that many women could afford. A smoky kohl eye and bright red lipstick became the brand’s signature look.

At the other end of the financial spectrum, members of the royal family, including Princess Anne, stopped by to snoop.

But the good times couldn’t last forever and in 1976 the store closed for good. In November 2009, the brand successfully relaunched at House of Fraser without Hulanicki on board, starting with fashion and then adding accessories and interior design lines.

The collections initially sold out and many designs were reminiscent of the iconic, original 1960s glamour.

However, the dwindling fortunes of House of Fraser itself ensure that the most recent incarnation of Biba has also reached its end.

The Biba story: 1964-1975 runs from March 22 to September 8

For the royal family, news of Catherine, Princess of Wales’s cancer diagnosis was another major blow, sidelining one of its most visible figures at a time when its ranks were already depleted.

In addition to King Charles III, who has canceled public appearances to undergo his own cancer treatment, the family has been adjusting to the loss of Queen Elizabeth II, who died in 2022; the departure of Prince Harry and his wife Meghan; and the exile of Prince Andrew, disgraced by his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Harry and Meghan released a statement saying they wished “health and healing for Kate and the family, and hope they can do this privately and in peace.”

Since Harry and Meghan, known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, stepped back from their royal duties in 2020 and left Britain for Southern California, Harry has been estranged from his father, Charles, and his brother, Prince William. He visited his father shortly after Buckingham Palace announced the king’s cancer diagnosis in February.

The palace said Friday that Charles was “so proud of Catherine for her courage to speak as she did.” The palace noted that the king had visited her while they were both being treated in a London hospital and said Charles “has remained in closest contact with his beloved daughter-in-law in recent weeks.”

The Great British Bake Off will reportedly remain on Channel 4 for another three years – after the hit series was at the center of a £100million tug-of-war between streaming giants before its contract with Channel 4 expired.

Reports earlier this month suggested that Netflix and other streaming channels could be enticed into attempting to move the beloved show to a rival broadcaster.

But according to The mirrorbosses are close to agreeing a new three-year deal for the series.

A TV source said: ‘There were some raised eyebrows at Channel 4 when reports suggested Bake Off could be moving in recent weeks as they are in the middle of negotiations.

‘But as far as the bosses are concerned, they have all the ingredients they deem necessary for a brilliant partnership on the show, and that’s something they want to continue.

The Great British Bake Off will now reportedly stay on Channel 4 for another three years – after the hit series was at the center of a £100million tug-of-war between streaming giants

A TV source claimed: 'Nothing has been confirmed but the most likely outcome now is that Bake Off will remain on Channel 4 beyond 2024'

A TV source claimed: ‘Nothing has been confirmed but the most likely outcome now is that Bake Off will remain on Channel 4 beyond 2024’

‘Nothing has been confirmed, but the most likely outcome now is for Bake Off to remain on Channel 4 beyond 2024, with both parties currently in favor of a three-year contract.’

MailOnline has contacted Channel 4 for comment.

It comes after claims emerged that the show could be forced to move to a streaming giant due to Channel 4’s ‘money problems’.

The channel axed several shows in 2023, reportedly to control costs, and last month it was reported that GBBO could be its next show.

The broadcaster’s contract to air the competition reportedly expires after the 2024 series, and it was claimed at the time that there was no talk of renewing it.

The sun claimed that Netflix and Disney+ were mentioned as potential buyers.

A source said: ‘The participation of two major companies in the race has massively increased the value of the show, which is already sought after for its global appeal.

‘Streamers also want to combine their model with shows that air at the same time and day every week.

‘Netflix is already doing this with WWE wrestling and Disney+ recently bought the US version of Strictly. Word is they both want to do the same with a big British show.”

Channel 4 is also said to be planning to cut 200 jobs after a huge drop in television advertising.

The show, judged by Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith and presented by Noel Fielding and Alison Hammond, launched on the BBC in 2010.

However, it was bought by Channel 4 in 2016 for £25 million, a shockwave that saw the original presenters sensationally quit.

Netflix currently has the rights to broadcast Bake Off in America, while ITV came close to bidding for the UK rights during the last round of negotiations, but decided against it.

Channel 4 said: ‘Any speculation around contracts is just that and we look forward to bringing many more soaking bottoms to our viewers in the future.’

Netflix and Disney+ declined to comment.

Judge Prue recently broke her silence on the claims and opened up The mirror: ‘Oh my God, I hope to stay with Bake Off wherever it goes. But I don’t think it will move.

‘I know a lot of people are struggling and Channel 4 has lost a lot of shows.

‘But I’m pretty sure as long as Channel 4 is around they will continue to follow Bake Off. It’s certainly one of their best shows. I think it has found its natural home on Channel 4.”

Tesco has released a limited edition sandwich inspired by a much-loved British classic, served in cafes across the country, leaving shoppers in a fit of both excitement and confusion.

The supermarket has launched the limited edition Beechwood Ham, Egg and Chips sandwich, influenced by the traditional British ‘local caff’ staple of ham, egg and chips.

The sandwich consists of layers of juicy beechwood ham, chopped egg mayonnaise and salt and vinegar fries, topped with ketchup and all nestled between two thick slices of white bread.

The sarnie is part of Tesco’s new ‘global cuisine’ range, which includes a Buffalo Chicken and Blue Cheese Wrap and a Korean-inspired Spicy Gochujang Chicken Sub – the sarnie hit shelves earlier this week.

And fans are already in a frenzy, with satisfied customers leaving rave reviews online, while some turned-off critics banded together to share their thoughts on one of the key ingredients.

Tesco has released a limited-edition sandwich inspired by a much-loved British classic, served in cafes across the country, leaving shoppers both excited and confused

One shopper sent a photo of his discovery to a food and products blog on Instagram as he browsed the fridge aisle of his local Tesco store.

The customer’s photo, which was reposted by @newfoodsUK on March 20 with Beechwood’s ham, egg and chips sandwich, received more than 1,700 likes and dozens of comments from fans and critics.

After trying the sarnie, someone wrote: ‘I had it, it was tasty. The fries weren’t soggy.’

Another echoed this sentiment, saying: ‘I’ve had this and it’s like having chips on your sandwich, surprisingly delicious.’

However, not everyone is convinced by Tesco’s latest creation, with some critics still unconvinced by the prospect of enjoying a sandwich full of ‘cold’ and ‘soggy’ chips.

One person asked: ‘Cold, soggy chips?’ while another wondered: ‘Chilled fries?’

A third disapproving person said: ‘Just because you can doesn’t mean you should,’ while another critic wrote: ‘Limited edition because no sane person will want to buy cold fries on a sandwich.’

Another customer, who tried the sarnie but didn’t seem to enjoy it, wrote: ‘Had it yesterday… weird!!! And not in a good way.”

The sandwich costs £3 and is available in all stores as part of a £3.40 Clubcard meal deal, but cannot currently be purchased online for home delivery or collection.

Tesco sandwich maker Sarah Bryer said: ‘We think it could become a breakfast classic.

‘We know how loved the chip butty is by the nation, and we’ve seen a huge wave of people admitting their guilty pleasure of a crispy sandwich on social media, paired with the British pub’s favorite ham, egg and chips.’

It comes after a single mother who was fired from her cleaning job for taking a leftover tuna sandwich from a law firm’s kitchen says she suffered “unfair and inhumane” treatment.

Gabriela Rodriguez, 39, was suspended by contractor Total Clean after helping herself to the £1.50 Tesco sandwich on a discarded plate for employees of City law firm Devonshires.

New Indonesian legislation could reduce Sandiford’s sentence from the death penalty to prison.

The British 67-year-old grandmother has been in a cell at the Kerobokan prison in the Indonesian capital Bali since 2012 for an attempt to smuggle cocaine..

A prison source told the Mirror that prisoners had been informed of the new law and that authorities planned to follow it.

An Indonesian woman jailed for corruption said Sandiford was seen as the “queen” of the prison.

Examples of the drug mule’s special treatment include the ability to order a medium-rare steak once a week.

But she added that the grandmother had given knitting lessons to her fellow inmates.

Others said Sandiford scares people away with her “foul mouth” and “antagonistic” personality.

Sandiford was caught flying to Bali with £10.16 of the Class A drug worth £1.6 million.

Having no previous convictions, she claimed she was forced by a British-based drug syndicate to smuggle cocaine from Thailand to Bali due to threats on the life of one of her two sons in Britain.

Despite cooperating with authorities in an attempt to arrest those higher up in the syndicate, she was given a death sentence, with human rights lawyers and former British prosecutor Ken Macdonald saying she had been treated with ‘quite extraordinary severity’.

While most travelers hope to reach ancient sites or historical monuments, one British explorer tries to get as far away from them as possible.

Chris Brown hopes to reach Point Nemo – the most remote place on Earth and the graveyard for hundreds of pieces of space junk.

In the middle of the Pacific Ocean, Point Nemo is so far from any land that the nearest humans are on the International Space Station 250 miles (408 km) above Earth.

If successful, the 62-year-old entrepreneur from Harrogate will become the first Briton to complete a specific expedition to the point.

‘I’m going to try to get in the water if at all possible. “I also expect to open a bottle of bubbly when I get there,” he said.

Chris Brown hopes to reach Point Nemo – the most remote place on Earth and the graveyard for hundreds of pieces of space junk

Mr Brown and his son Mika, 32, set sail aboard the chartered expedition yacht Hanse Explorer from Puerto Montt, Chile, on March 12.

The pair hope to reach Point Nemo on March 20 or 21 if all goes according to plan.

Although Mr Brown says he had considered using a racing yacht to get to the point as quickly as possible, he ultimately opted for the safer option of a more robust vessel.

The luxury yacht usually makes tourist expeditions to Antarctica and is said to pass quite close to Point Nemo.

Mr Brown said that ‘after some negotiation the owners agreed to our little detour.’

POINT NEMO: THE MOST REMOTE LOCATION ON EARTH

‘Point Nemo’, named after Jules Verne’s famous submarine Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, is the most remote place on earth.

This remote oceanic location is located at coordinates 48°52.6′S 123°23.6′W.

This puts it about 1,670 miles from the nearest landmass: Ducie Island.

Nemo has the Pitcairn Islands to the north, the Easter Islands to the northeast and the Maher Islands to the south.

Its remote location has made it a popular spot for space agencies.

They use it as a graveyard for rocket stages and satellites because it allows them to return to Earth to reduce risks.

The crew’s destination is the so-called Oceanic Pole of Inaccessibility, meaning it is the furthest point from land.

From Point Nemo, the nearest land is Ducie Island, part of the Pitcairn Islands, which is 2,688 kilometers away.

Besides a few small islands, the nearest major inhabited areas are Wellington, New Zealand and Concepción, Chile, both of which are over 2,500 miles away.

This part of the world is so remote that it has become the most popular place for international space agencies to drop falling space debris.

Since 1971, more than 260 pieces of space debris have found their final resting place in the waters around Point Nemo, including Russia’s Mir space station.

Within the next decade, this remote part of the Pacific Ocean will also be the site of the International Space Station’s downing.

When the ISS lands at Point Nemo, it will actually be seven times further from any human settlement than it is in orbit.

The point has been known since 1992, when a research engineer calculated the furthest point for landing, taking into account the Earth’s ellipsoid shape.

Since its discovery, several ships have approached the point, including Ocean Race participants traveling between Auckland, New Zealand and Itajaí, Brazil.

Point Nemo's remote location makes it the ideal place for space agencies to retrieve space debris from orbit, because the chance of anyone getting hit is so incredibly low.

However, maritime experts have stated that ‘it is possible that no human ever passed through the specific coordinates’.

Nevertheless, Mr Brown appears undeterred by the extreme remoteness of the site.

Ultimately, he hopes to become the first person to reach all eight continental poles of inaccessibility on Earth.

These are the points on each continent that are furthest from any ocean, making them among the most remote places on Earth.

Mr Brown has already reached five of the eight, reaching the poles in Antarctica, Oceania, Africa, North America and South America.

Mr Brown and his son Mika, 30, are expected to reach the point on March 21, after leaving Chile last Tuesday

“I don’t consider this as dangerous as my expeditions to Africa or Antarctica,” he said.

‘The obvious danger is that you are miles from anywhere at sea, and you are a long way from any of the shipping lanes, so if there was a problem with the boat help would take a long time to wait. ‘

During the expedition to the Antarctic Pole of Inaccessibility, Mr Brown and his son were briefly stranded in temperatures of -28°C after their plane broke down.

But while Mr. Brown may be adventurous, he also seems to have a keen sense of danger.

Last year he came to media attention after it was revealed that he had turned down a spot on the ill-fated submarine expedition to the Titanic.

Mr Brown said he even paid a deposit for a seat on the OceanGate ship.

However, he pulled out of the trip after discovering the submarine would be controlled with games console controllers saying it looked ‘sloppy’.

Although Point Nemo has been known since the 1990s, maritime experts say it's possible no one has ever sailed through its exact coordinates before

Mr Brown plans to collect water samples at Point Nemo to test the density of microplastics on their way to the world’s most remote oceans.

In addition to being a dumping ground for space debris, Point Nemo is located in a complex network of circular currents that trap large amounts of waste.

The South Pacific Gyre in which Point Nemo is located is a confluence of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, the Humboldt Current, and the West Wind Drift.

As a result, this region of the Pacific Ocean has become something of an oceanic garbage dump.

Fortunately, this area may also be one of the least biologically active regions of the world’s oceans.

In the 4,000 meter deep waters it is so devoid of nutrients that life can hardly exist.

Scientists have only discovered bacteria and small crabs living in the sea vents on the ocean floor near the point.

Britain’s House of Lords dealt a sharp setback to the government on Wednesday by voting to change key Conservative Party immigration legislation and potentially delay a controversial plan to put asylum seekers on one-way flights to Rwanda.

It was an unusual show of opposition from the Lords, many of whom objected to the policy on legal and constitutional grounds. Although the Conservative government, with a comfortable majority in the House of Commons, can eventually get the bill passed, the back-and-forth with the House of Lords, the unelected upper house of parliament, could hamper the government’s hopes for a quick start can thwart. to a plan it sees as crucial to its fortunes in an election year.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak argues that the flights to Rwanda, a small country in East Africa, would be a vital deterrent and could stem the flow of tens of thousands of people who make the dangerous, often illegal, small-scale crossing from France to Britain every year to make. often unseaworthy boats.

The government does not expect such flights until May, and following the House of Lords’ actions on Wednesday, that timeline could now move to June. The Prime Minister’s Office had no immediate comment.

Those chosen for the first flight are expected to file legal challenges that could further hamper the plan.

Under the legislation, the asylum claims of those deported from Britain would be assessed in Rwanda. But even if the claims were successful, the deportees would remain there and not be allowed to settle in Britain.

The policy was started almost two years ago by former Prime Minister Boris Johnson. But despite paying hundreds of millions of pounds to Rwanda as part of its deal with that country, the British government has so far failed to send a single asylum seeker there.

The government is under intense pressure over the arrival of small boats on British shores, which have become a symbol of its failure to control immigration. Taking control of Britain’s borders was a central promise of the 2016 Brexit campaign, championed by Mr Johnson and backed by Mr Sunak.

In June 2022, a last-minute legal action grounded the first scheduled flight of asylum seekers to Rwanda, and the policy has since been suspended. Last year, the UK High Court ruled against the plan, saying that Rwanda was not a safe destination for refugees and that there was a risk that some sent there would be sent back to their countries of origin, where they could be in danger.

The bill discussed on Wednesday overturns that ruling, declaring Rwanda a safe country and instructing the courts to consider the country as such. This approach was heavily criticized in the House of Lords, which includes former lawmakers, lawyers, judges, civil servants and diplomats.

In a debate last month, Kenneth Clarke, a Conservative former finance minister, said the legislation set “an extremely dangerous precedent” by legally contradicting the Supreme Court.

During its deliberations, the House of Lords put forward a series of amendments, but these were rejected this week by the elected and much more powerful House of Commons. On Wednesday, the Lords voted to reintroduce seven amendments, including one requiring Rwanda to provide proof that it is a safe destination for refugees.

The Senate can do little more than postpone a bill, and due to a lack of democratic legitimacy, it invariably ultimately bows to the will of the House of Commons. But that didn’t stop some members from taking a challenging tone.

“I know that some noble Lords believe the House of Commons should have the final say,” said David Hope, a retired Scottish judge who is an impartial member of the House of Lords. ‘But on this occasion I really invite your Lordships who are prepared to take this position to think very carefully.’

Vernon Coaker, a member speaking for the opposition Labor party, which opposes the plan, criticized the government for refusing to give any weight to the previous amendments tabled by the House of Lords. Any delays in the deportation policy were the government’s fault, he said, because it controls the parliamentary timetable.

But he conceded that the legislation would eventually pass. “We have said all along, and I repeat here, that it is not our intention to block the bill,” he said.

In addition to the legislation, known as the Safety of Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration) Bill, the British government negotiated a new treaty with the Rwandan government to try to address the Supreme Court’s concerns.

Under the latest version of the plan, even those whose asylum claims were rejected while in Rwanda would be allowed to stay there. This was intended to allay fears that they could be sent back to their country of origin, where they might be in danger.

Yet the bill has been strongly criticized by human rights organizations. “All this could now come to an end if the government abandons its cruel policy of refusing to decide on asylum claims this country receives,” said Sacha Deshmukh, CEO of Amnesty International UK.

Flora Steel, an art historian, bought a silver brooch at an antiques fair in the English Midlands more than thirty years ago for about twenty pounds, about $35 at the time. After wearing it for several years on the lapel of one of her favorite coats, she put it in a closet, where it remained untouched for twenty years.

That was until last year, when Ms Steel was scrolling through YouTube on her phone and came across a 2011 BBC story about a brooch featured on the television program ‘Antiques Roadshow’. In the clip, presenter Geoffrey Munn showed a page of sketches of other brooches designed by the same Victorian-era architect and artist.

“I thought, ‘God, that’s mine!’” Ms. Steel said.

Mr Munn said during the show that he dreamed of finding brooches designed by the artist William Burges, calling his jewelry the “almost holy grail of Victorian 19th-century design.”

On Tuesday, Ms. Steel’s brooch sold for £9,500 (about $12,000) to a private collector at Gildings Auctioneers in Market Harborough, England. It is made of silver, lapis lazuli, malachite and pink coral.

“It caught my eye because of the incredible design – the beautiful use of stones,” said Ms Steel, who has been collecting silver jewelry since she was 13.

Mrs Steel was the third person to sell a William Burges brooch by auction through Gildings; the other two also realized the value of their brooches after watching ‘Antiques Roadshow’. One of the brooches sold for £31,000 in 2011 (approximately $50,000 at the time).

Burges, who is best known for his designs Cardiff castle in Wales, made the brooches for the weddings of two friends in 1864, Gildings said, citing notes on the original sketches of the brooches, which are stored in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Ms Steel’s brooch, which has a Victorian Gothic aesthetic, is engraved with the initials ‘JCG’, the initials of Rev John Gibson, a clergyman, and Caroline Bendyshe, a great-niece of Admiral Lord Nelson.

“If those pages of sketches had not been preserved, the association with the designer would have been completely lost in the annals of history,” says Will Gilding, director at Gildings.

Ms Steel, who is from Britain but lives in Rome, said her joy at discovering she owned a long-lost, treasured brooch brought her much-needed joy after two years of treatment for breast cancer.

After successful treatment, she said she planned to donate some of the money to a breast cancer research fund and give some to her son. She also considered setting aside a few for herself for a five-day horseback riding tour of Tuscany, Italy, and a visit to the San Carlo Opera House in Naples.

“That’s how the week went downhill.”

So begins a holidaymaker’s hilariously ‘honest’ video review of a family stay at Center Parcs, which has gone viral on his Instagram account (@alexdodman), with over 114,000 likes and over 7,700 comments.

In the clip, Alex Dodman dryly explains the cost of all the activities he paid for and what he thought of them in terms of value for money.

And it’s not good news for Center Parcs, as Alex adds before revealing everything: ‘Stupidly enough, we have a lot booked to do.’

Alex, from Saffron Walden, Essex, visited the Woburn Forest Resort in Bedfordshire last month with his partner and two children. He starts his review by showing the ‘fantastic date selection tool’ from the Center Parcs website.

He claims, “You can find out what it is school holidays for children when it [the price] jumps up with a grand. This way you know it’s time to book that magical family outing.’

He then checks into his “ridiculously expensive shed,” before listing the many activities the family has enjoyed.

First up was karting.

In the video, Alex reveals a “small concrete track” and go-karts that “use your own energy.”

The family tried soccer pool at the resort.

He sarcastically notes: ‘For the four of us it was only £41 for 20 minutes.’

Next on the list was football pool.

Alex reveals a giant pool table on the floor with footballs on it and says, “Yeah, don’t bother with kids. [It was] €14.50 for half an hour.

Going through the next round of activities, Alex says: Cupcake Decorating for Kids, £27 for two children for 45 minutes. S***.

‘Kids mini jet skis, £25 for two for nine minutes at 9.30am. S***.”

Then just a ray of sunshine. He describes Center Parcs’ interactive squash, which costs £18 for 45 minutes, as ‘actually decent’ and says it ‘destroys the kids’.

Next in the montage is a game of badminton, for which he paid £18 for 45 minutes. Alex says it’s “not bad, just find a good partner.”

But then more disappointments. His images show a room full of interactive lighting and a giant toy owl, which turns out to be the resort’s ‘Winter Quest’ activity.

The verdict? ‘[I paid] €49 for 20 minutes. I repeat, €49. Absolutely damn it,” Alex says.

He was also let down by the resort’s mini-jeeps. If his two children drove the 4×4 for 20 minutes, he said it would cost £49. Reports, he says, “I don’t even know where to start.”

Alex then heads to Center Parcs’ Pottery Painting Studio, which he claims is ‘top notch’.

He says: ‘This has to be the biggest extortion racket in British history. At £18 to book for three, you’d think, ‘Yeah, not bad.’ But that’s just to get in.

‘Now they’ve got you, you’re in. Kids are buzzing. Time to buy some mass produced stuff to paint.

‘One mug, one train, one pot later, and I’ve lost 76 pounds.’

The total cost of the activities mentioned in Alex’s review is a whopping £335.50.

And “this isn’t even half of it,” he says.

Filming the resort’s supermarket revealing a jar of Dolmio’s Bolognese sauce worth £3.60, Alex says: ‘Food prices are high.’ He also claims there is a ‘dry robes pandemic’ as he films a stranger wearing a robe in a cafe at the resort.

Summarizing his week-long stay, he says, “Unless you can let your kids swim and cycle aimlessly all week. You’re f*****.’

His video sparked mixed reactions when posted on social media. Some Instagram users were quick to agree with Alex, with one describing Center Parcs as ‘daylight robbery’ and another wondering ‘why people pay so much attention to it’.

Others, however, jumped to defend Center Parcs. User ‘mikedinni’ wrote: ‘Tthanks for this review. The more people who think it’s too expensive, the better. Keeps it nice and quiet for me. It costs £420 for five days in March.’

User ‘raddygriffinwood’ added: ‘Or just cycle around and use the pool for free. Share a lodge with extended family and it’s a lot cheaper. Nobody forces you to book a bunch of activities.’
