But despite Southgate, 53, being touted as the successor to Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, Maguire claims he would prefer to see him as his international rather than club manager.

Ahead of hosting Brazil tomorrow, defender Maguire said: “We want to be successful at the European Championship. We don’t watch the World Cup; the European Championship is our main goal.

“And if Gareth is the man who will make us successful, then we want him to stay as long as possible.

“He has the respect of the players and everyone who worked under him.

“It’s so tough being England boss. It is one of the most researched jobs in the world.

“All you can look at is where we were before he took over and where we are now. Everyone will say: ‘Yes, but we have better players now’.

“But in previous years we had great players and we were not successful.

“He deserves a lot of credit, he has helped us a long way.

“If you speak to anyone they will speak highly of Gareth’s tactical management, but also his man-management.”

Southgate’s contract expires in December and will not discuss a new deal until after the European Championship.

Four England stars train away from the rest of the squad after a blow to Gareth Southgate ahead of Brazil’s clash

But it is believed he would prefer a return to club management.

Maguire was a cornerstone of England’s defense as they reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and the 2021 European Championship, before a quarter-final exit in Qatar in 2022.

But the United man added: “I’m sure Gareth will say the same thing now: ‘it’s all about winning a trophy’.”

Maguire, who has won 62 caps under Southgate, was backed by the Lions boss even as he struggled for game time at United.

He added: “The faith and trust he has shown in me has been brilliant.”

Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford claims the players will not be swayed by speculation over Southgate’s future.

He said: “Our goal is to win the European Championship. All the noise around everything else comes after.”

The woman took to Reddit to explain the situation and vent, revealing that she works 13 hours a day most days as a steam fitter.

And since her husband is not in favor of cleaning the house, she decided to hire a cleaner to lighten the burden on her when she comes home from a grueling shift.

The woman’s steam fitting earns as much as £80 an hour, so she even suggested her husband “could pay her the same hourly rate to do extra housework”.

A steamfitter is a professional who installs, maintains and repairs piping systems that transport gases or liquids under high pressure, such as steam, air, water or chemicals.

Also known as pipe fitters; the average salary for someone in Britain is £37,050, according to Talent.com.

“However, my husband is angry because I decided to pay for a cleaning lady,” the woman explained.

‘He and I discussed it and we agreed that he and the children had not done a good job of keeping the house clean and tidy while I was away at work.

“I hated coming home to a mess.

“It caused a few arguments because it seemed like they expected me to come home and clean up the mess.”

She described the cleaning lady as “fantastic” because she is always happy when she walks through the door to a tidy house and the children “have more time to study”.

But despite the improved quality of life, her husband believes the cleaner is a “waste of money”.

“I said I could give him two options,” she said.

“If he wanted we could get rid of the cleaner altogether, he and the kids could make sure the house was in good condition when I got home.

“Or he can pay me my hourly rate to do extra housework when I’m on my days off.”

Her options were not well received and her husband even forced her to call her “financially manipulative”.

“I think if he and the kids actually did what they had to do when I was gone, none of this would be a problem,” she said.

Her post on Reddit has attracted massive attention, with countless people justifying her annoyance – and some even calling her husband ‘sexist’.

“This is definitely more about control than cost savings,” one person warned.

“Your husband has a big problem,” said another. ‘Why should you do the housework if he doesn’t do it?

“What a sexist attitude.

“You have the right not to be the housekeeper.”

Pauline Hanson has repeated her most infamous slur – that Australia was being ‘overrun’ by Asians – in a parliamentary speech calling on the country to halt immigration.

In a speech to the Senate shortly after 9am on Thursday, the One Nation leader called for a national vote to determine what Australians believe is an appropriate level of immigration.

She argued that citizens want immigration levels to be kept ‘low’ and repeated, with only a slight difference, her maiden speech to Parliament, which made her one of the most controversial figures in Australia.

She told how she ‘warned that we were in danger of being swamped by immigration from Asia’ in her 1996 speech, after being elected MP first for the seat of Oxley and then for Ipswich after the Liberal Party wrested from her distanced.

Nearly thirty years ago, Hanson immediately became a divisive figure when she said, “I believe we are in danger of being overrun by Asians.”

Speaking about the reaction to her speech to Parliament this morning, she said: “I was of course called a racist by the major parties and the major media who are aligned with a great Australia.

“But today, seven of the top 10 source countries for immigration to Australia are in Asia – including four of the top five – and the numbers are out of control.

‘Was I right? You would never admit it. But yes, that’s me.’

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has called for an immediate freeze on immigration, which Australia has not had since the pandemic hit in 2020 and 2021

India was Australia’s top source of overseas migration in 2023, followed by China, the Philippines and the United Kingdom.

Unemployment fell to 3.7 percent in February, a big drop from a January high of 4.1 percent, new figures released Thursday showed.

But Senator Hanson reiterated her 1996 comments that migrants were receiving benefits.

“Immigration must be stopped at short notice so that our waiting lists for benefits are not filled by, in many cases, unskilled migrants who are not fluent in the English language,” she said.

Senator Hanson’s comments came as a newly appointed Liberal senator called for a reduction in immigration levels in Australia until housing supply can keep pace with rapid population growth.

A record number of 518,000 migrants moved to Australia in the last financial year.

Australia’s population growth rate is at its highest level since the early 1950s at 2.5 percent, with the net immigration rate more than double the 2007 mining boom level.

Dave Sharma, the former MP for the Sydney seat of Wentworth who revived his political career as a Liberal senator for New South Wales, says immigration must be reduced until Australia can provide adequate housing.

“The housing shortage is exacerbated by high immigration, which fuels demand for an already limited supply,” he said in his first speech to the Senate on Wednesday afternoon.

“Until we can accelerate the pace of our housing construction, we must reduce our immigration inflows, otherwise we will only put further pressure on our housing market.”

With Australia’s rental vacancy rate at a record one per cent, Senator Hanson said Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had ignored calls to stop high immigration.

“They are heard in the growing line of people waiting to inspect a single property in the hope of securing a rental,” she said.

“They are being heard at family dinner tables as Australians struggle to find the money for massive rent increases amid our cost of living crisis.

‘They can be heard in the daily traffic jams as record numbers of immigrants flood our cities and increase traffic congestion.

“They are being heard in the growing cities of tents, swags and cars popping up across Australia as more people become homeless and desperate.”

Sydney’s average house price of $1.396 million would require someone to earn more than $200,000 a year to even qualify for a home loan, CoreLogic data showed.

A worker with an average income of $98,218 can only afford a house worth up to $639,000, which would not buy the average-priced house in the capital worth $949,410.

Senator Sharma said unaffordable housing risks causing major social problems.

“Today’s younger Australians have done everything we asked of them,” he said.

“They’ve finished school, gotten a degree, found a job, paid taxes, and yet they find that no matter how much they earn or how hard they save, owning their own home is out of their reach.

“This is a violation of our social contract and if left unchecked, we are storing up huge problems for the future.

“We will undermine social mobility in Australia and entrench inequality.”

With Sydney home to a greater proportion of new migrants, Senator Sharma said the undersupply of housing was particularly prevalent in NSW.

“The failure here is largely a matter of supply,” he said.

“Consistently, over the past 20 years, we have simply failed to build enough new homes to meet the demand of the Australian population, and this problem is particularly acute in my home state of New South Wales.”

In the year to September, Australia built 109,322 homes and 60,813 units, construction activity data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows.

The 170,215 newly completed homes would house 425,538 homes, based on an average household size of 2.5 people per home at the last census.

The supply of new homes would leave a deficit of 92,462, based on new migrants.

Senator Sharma pointed out that NSW only builds 32,000 homes a year, which is well below the post-World War II level of 40,000, when Australia had a population of 7.4 million, down from 26.6 million people today.

‘We have to do better. “We need to enable more homes to be built, faster and cheaper, or we will leave Australia behind,” he said.

Last year he replaced former Foreign Minister Marise Payne as Liberal Senator for NSW and was previously Liberal Member for Wentworth in Sydney’s east until he was defeated by Teal independent Allegra Spender at the last election in 2022.

Australia’s former ambassador to Israel warned that anti-Semitism is a major threat following the October 7 Hamas terrorist attacks.

“What we have seen in recent months has clearly crossed the Rubicon and left one community and one community alone – the Australian Jewish community – feeling unwelcome in their own country, fearful in their own neighborhoods and worried about the future what they have to deal with. here,” he said.

‘This is completely unacceptable. It’s also incredibly dangerous.’

Outspoken footy identity Eddie McGuire has called for major changes to the Melbourne Cricket Ground – including a retractable roof that would give the famous stadium a completely new look when deployed.

The former Collingwood president also wants the Great Southern Stand – now called the Shane Warne Stand – to be rebuilt and a retractable pitch added to make hosting multiple events in a short space of time much easier.

McGuire spoke about his Eddie and Jimmy podcast with Geelong great Jimmy Bartel on Monday as he outlined his vision for the future of the ground.

The MCG (pictured during last Saturday’s Essendon vs Hawthorn AFL match) currently seats 100,000 spectators, but McGuire would like to accommodate an additional 20,000 spectators

The 59-year-old was inspired by a recent conversation he had with Casey Wasserman, Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games chairman and entertainment executive, who told him that the stadium’s future should revolve around it being a multi-use venue .

McGuire revealed that he once met Robert Kraft, the owner of the New England Patriots NFL team, and left him stunned when he told him that the MCG can hold 100,000 people.

He sees that enormous capacity as the land’s strongest selling point – and one that should be built on.

“It’s our big difference, the 100,000,” McGuire said.

‘We have to replace that Southern Stand. It must be up to 120,000 here at the MCG.

“We have to look at the retractable roof, but also the retractable surface forward.

“We need to look at infrastructure to take us forward, not backward.”

McGuire said a retractable roof would not only protect against rain, but could also be a solution to putting athletes and performers in a situation where they have to perform during very hot days.

He cited Spanish football team Real Madrid’s Bernabeu stadium, Canada’s BC Place and Germany’s Frankfurt stadium – all of which have retractable roofs – as examples of what the MCG should aim for.

“NFL games now go to these places for these reasons,” he said.

It’s not the first time McGuire has called for a roof at the G, with the Victorian government beginning a feasibility study in 2022.

Last year, McGuire estimated the cost of adding the roof and rebuilding the Warne stand at $1.5 billion to $2 billion.

If McGuire's recommendations come to fruition, he is confident the famous venue will be much better positioned to attract bigger events such as Taylor Swift's recent tour (pictured)

If McGuire’s recommendations come to fruition, he is confident the famous venue will be much better positioned to attract bigger events such as Taylor Swift’s recent tour (pictured)

That doesn’t include the option for a retractable pitch, which allows playing surfaces for AFL matches to be quickly moved after major events such as Taylor Swift’s recent concerts on the ground, leaving staff struggling to repair the turf in time for the football season. .

Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium uses retractable pitches, with Aussies allowed to check out the system when it was used to erect a new playing surface for the NRL double header in the city earlier this month.

Instead of taking days to bring the playing surface up to standard, a new playing field can be moved to the stadium in just 65 minutes.

With a second tug ship in urgent need of help and ready to leave for Gaza on Sunday, José Andrés, the founder of the food organization that sent the ships, called for a ceasefire and said Israel should do more to prevent hunger in Gaza.

“At the very least,” said Andrés, the celebrity chef, on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Israel “should ensure that no one goes hungry and that no one goes without food and water.”

“This is something that should happen overnight,” he added. “But for political reasons I don’t think it happens there.”

Mr. Andrés said he hoped his group, World Central Kitchen, would be able to scale up its burgeoning efforts and eventually bring “massive quantities of food every day to the shores of Gaza,” where, according to United Nations officials, 2, 2 million people are on the run. brink of famine.

Although the Open Arms, the first ship dispatched by the group, has attracted global attention in recent days, the maritime route has so far provided only a small portion of the aid the UN says is needed to prevent famine. The Open Arms towed a ship to a makeshift jetty off the coast of Gaza on Friday carrying the equivalent of about 10 truckloads of food – far less than the 500 trucks a day that aid groups say are needed.

Aid groups — including World Central Kitchen, which has sent more than 1,400 aid trucks to Gaza — have urged Israel to allow more trucks through more land crossings, saying only a rapid flow of trucks can support Gaza’s population.

But according to U.N. data, only about 150 trucks enter Gaza every day through the two open border crossings, due to several factors, including lengthy Israeli inspections to impose strict restrictions on what can enter Gaza.

The restrictions on these entry points have sparked a scramble for creative solutions among donors such as the European Union, which helped establish a maritime route from Cyprus to Gaza, and the United States, which has dropped aid and is leading an effort to build a temporary pier off the coast of Gaza to allow more deliveries by ship. White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday that it would take six to eight weeks to complete construction.

So far, only the World Central Kitchen, which Mr Andrés founded after the 2010 Haiti earthquake, has successfully delivered direct aid to Gaza by ship. The first delivery consisted of approximately 200 tons of rice, flour and lentils, as well as canned tuna, chicken and beef.

The second, which was still anchored in the Cypriot port of Larnaca on Sunday evening, will bring food and equipment to help with future maritime deliveries.

Mr Andrés wondered aloud on Sunday why the Israeli army was bombing buildings in Gaza where hostages could be staying that Israel says it wants to see brought to safety. He also appealed for peace, saying he had seen great humanity on both sides of the conflict.

“The time I spent in Israel, the time I spent in Gaza, it seems that everyone loves falafel and everyone loves hummus with equal intensity,” said Mr. Andrés, whose group has more than 60 community kitchens in Gaza has opened to serve hot meals. “It makes you wonder how people who like the same foods can come into conflict with each other.”

Holly Candy, known professionally as Holly Valance, has taken a stunning swipe at climate activist Greta Thunberg in an explosive interview with GB News’ Chopper’s Political Podcast.

Valance, 40, a former pop star and Neighbors actress who recently rebranded herself as a conservative commentator, didn’t mince her words when she revealed her thoughts on Swedish-born Thunberg, 21.

The Australian star told podcast host Christopher Hope: ‘I don’t understand why you have this demonic little gremlin, high priestess of climatism, as the goddess in the classrooms, Greta [Thunberg].’

“All the kids all come home with depression and anxiety,” she said.

“Why would you go to your music class, do your homework, or get out of bed if you think we’ll all be dead in five years anyway?”

Elsewhere in the interview, the mother-of-two said she has no plans to move back to her Australian homeland, and lamented that the country is “waking up”.

‘The Australia I grew up in was surreal. It was so much fun and we didn’t seem to have all these problems… the woke thing has really become big in Australia,” she said.

Holly elaborated on the ‘woke culture’, pointing to ‘the things they learn in school’: ‘I don’t think sexuality and children should be in the same sentence. I don’t think anyone’s sexuality is anyone’s business. You don’t know anything about mine. I don’t know about you. Why should we?’

Valance, married to billionaire property developer Nick Candy, was born in Australia but has British citizenship through her British mother. She lives in London and the Cotswolds.

Holly also took the opportunity to attack ‘nanny state’ Victoria, explaining that she still gets fines every few months for not voting. The government will “fine you for breathing,” she joked.

She also firmly ruled out a return to Australia if Labor won the upcoming British election.

“The plan would be to stay and live what we love, which is here, I’m very patriotic for this place. My mother is from Southampton. My whole family is English,” she told the podcast.

‘I don’t want to go anywhere. And Nick doesn’t want to go anywhere. We prefer to be in our country.’

In 2012, Holly married Nick in Beverly Hills and they welcomed two daughters together in 2013 and 2017, Luka Violet Toni and Nova Skye Coco respectively.

The couple enjoy a lavish lifestyle and previously lived in a two-storey Hyde Park penthouse worth £175 million, making it Britain’s most expensive flat.

Nick and Holly have since downsized to a £10 million mansion in the Cotswolds, which they are currently renovating.

In 2020, Nick gifted Holly a £26 million superyacht, despite the mother-of-two suffering from seasickness.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday rejected the latest ceasefire deal proposed by Hamas, calling its demands “ridiculous” and saying Israel would move forward with plans for a ground offensive in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, where more than half of the enclave’s population lives there. is taking shelter.

Still, Mr. Netanyahu signaled he was open to more talks. He announced that he is sending an Israeli delegation back to Qatar, where mediation efforts are taking place.

The prime minister’s response came a day after Hamas made a counter-offer to Israel aimed at securing a ceasefire and a hostage exchange for Palestinian prisoners. In a statement, Hamas said it had presented to mediators in Qatar a “comprehensive vision” for a ceasefire in the five-month war, which has devastated the Gaza Strip and cost at least 30,000 lives there. It gave no details about its new proposal.

Within hours, Netanyahu’s office said that “Hamas continues to adhere to unrealistic demands.” Then, on Friday, Mr. Netanyahu released a second statement saying, “As for the hostages, Hamas’s demands are still ridiculous,” without elaborating.

Armistice talks have been stalled for weeks, despite efforts by officials from the United States, Egypt and Qatar to reach an agreement. Hamas has pushed for a full Israeli withdrawal and a permanent ceasefire before any hostage-for-prisoner exchanges could take place. Israel has rejected these conditions.

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken confirmed during a visit to Vienna that Hamas had made a counterproposal, but said he could not reveal the details.

The United States is working “intensively” with Israel, Qatar and Egypt “to bridge remaining gaps,” he said. Israel’s decision to send a negotiating team to Qatar “reflects the sense of possibility – and urgency – to reach an agreement.”

A week-long ceasefire was successfully negotiated in late November, when Israel and Hamas agreed to a pause in fighting and an exchange of more than 100 hostages and 240 captured Palestinians. Diplomats tried to extend the ceasefire, but it collapsed and fighting resumed in early December.

Mr Netanyahu is under increasing international pressure to end the war and limit civilian deaths. President Biden has become more forceful in recent days in his call for Israel to alleviate the plight of civilians in Gaza, who face severe hunger and continue to die in Israeli airstrikes.

The US president has urged Netanyahu not to go ahead with his plans to launch a major ground offensive in Rafah, where hundreds of thousands of displaced people have been confined to temporary shelters.

But Netanyahu has vowed to reject international pressure to abandon a ground operation in Rafah, which Israel says is one of Hamas’s last major strongholds. On Friday, Mr. Netanyahu said he had approved plans for a military operation in Rafah and that Israeli forces were also preparing “for the evacuation of the population.”

Michael Crowley reporting contributed.

When Lindsay didn’t believe Carl’s explanation that he was tired, he flipped the script and asked her, “How many drinks have you had?” Carl claimed that Lindsay then shot back, “What are you doing?” and called him a “liar” when he denied being high. (Carl has been sober from alcohol since 2021, but does smoke weed occasionally.)

‘Carl, do you smoke weed? Did you smoke weed tonight?” Lindsay asked Carl during their fight at the Hamptons house, to which he said no. Lindsay joked, “You are the biggest gaslighter I have ever met. You’re literally like this [Tom] Sandoval straight away.”

Lindsay further claimed that Carl “got into a fight” with her in the car, stating that “now everyone knows you’re not an angel.”

She then rushed into the kitchen to search Amanda Batula. “He is literally the biggest gaslighter I have ever met,” Lindsay shouted, surprising Amanda, 32.

Lindsay noted that Carl is the “most amazing human being ever,” but she claimed he also “has a lot of demons and those demons are coming for me.”

She claimed: “It’s a Jekyll and Hyde, smoke and mirrors situation. I do not make a joke. I am the only one on earth who has seen his bad side.”

The White House urged Republicans in the House of Representatives on Friday to end their efforts to impeach President Biden, declaring that “enough is enough” after their months-long investigation failed to deliver promised evidence of high crimes and crimes.

“It is clearly time to move on, Mr. Chairman,” White House counsel Edward N. Siskel wrote in a four-page letter to Speaker Mike Johnson. “This impeachment is over. There is too much important work to be done for the American people to continue wasting time on this charade.”

The letter comes as the Republican impeachment proceedings have all but collapsed following the indictment of a key witness on charges of fabricating allegations against Hunter Biden, the president’s son. A number of Republicans have questioned this venture, and even some impeachment advocates have now concluded that they would not be able to muster a majority if they sent articles to the floor indicting Mr. Biden.

The White House is hoping to take advantage of the Republicans’ disarray, essentially calling their bluff and daring them to put up or shut up, although it is unlikely that the hardliners at the Republican conference will vote for either will choose both options. Biden’s team holds little hope that Republicans will formally call off the investigation, let alone acknowledge that they don’t have much to show for it, but the president’s advisers want to put a punctuation mark on the Republican setbacks and make it clear to the public that Impeachment is effectively dead.

It’s part of a new aggressive strategy by the president as he begins his reelection campaign in earnest, starting with his confrontational State of the Union address last week and his active travel schedule in battleground states since then. After a period when allies feared Mr. Biden was too passive, he hopes to be back on the offensive as he heads into a rematch with former President Donald J. Trump, whom he defeated in 2020.

Republicans in the House of Representatives aren’t quite ready to give up yet. They claim they are still investigating and have scheduled a hearing next week with Hunter Biden’s former business associates. They also demand recordings of special counsel Robert K. Hur’s investigation, which investigated Mr. Biden’s handling of classified documents even though they were not among the subjects of the impeachment inquiry and Mr. Hur decided no criminal charges were warranted used to be.

But recognizing that an impeachment vote is unlikely at this point, Republicans have explored an alternative strategy by issuing criminal referrals, urging the Justice Department to investigate Mr. Biden or the people around him. Such a move would have no legal weight and would essentially be little more than a symbolic statement, unless Mr. Trump wins and uses the references to justify a prosecution of Mr. Biden after he leaves office.

In his letter on Friday, Mr. Siskel addressed the majority of the Republican Party in the House of Representatives over its problems with impeachment. He quoted Republicans themselves as saying they “cannot identify a particular crime” allegedly committed by the president, and lamented that they had made impeachment “a social media issue rather than a constitutional concept.”

“The House Majority should work with the President on our economy, national security and other important priorities on behalf of the American people, and not continue to waste time on these types of political stunts,” the House wrote. Mr Siskel.

Rather than finding evidence that the president committed criminal acts, he added, “the investigation has consistently uncovered evidence that the president has, in fact, done nothing wrong.” He listed 20 witnesses whose testimony he said undermined the Republican theory that money paid to Hunter Biden by foreign companies amounted to bribery. He noted that “the majority cannot identify any policy or governance decisions that were allegedly inappropriately influenced.”

Mr. Siskel criticized Republicans for trying to re-interview witnesses who had already testified, “perhaps in the hope that the facts will be different the second time,” which he called “just the latest abuse tactic in this investigation.” Republican efforts to seize Hur’s investigation, he added, amounted to seeking “a flotation device for the sinking impeachment effort.”

The Republican investigation began shortly after the party took control of the House of Representatives early last year and was approved as an official impeachment inquiry in September by Kevin McCarthy, then the speaker of the House of Representatives. The full House voted in December to formalize the investigation on a strict party-line vote.

However, the impeachment effort suffered a major blow last month when Alexander Smirnov, a witness relied on by Republicans, was accused of fabricating claims that Mr Biden and his son had each solicited $5 million in bribes from a Ukrainian company. Mr. Smirnov told investigators that “officials linked to Russian intelligence were involved in relaying a story” about Hunter Biden.

“No evidence has shown that the President did anything wrong,” Mr. Siskel wrote. “In fact, it has shown the opposite of what House Republicans are saying.”

Senator Chuck Schumer, Democrat of New York and majority leader, delivered a sharp speech in the Senate on Thursday, in which he denounced Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel as a major obstacle to peace in the Middle East and called for new leadership in Israel, into the war for five months.

Many Democratic lawmakers have condemned Netanyahu’s leadership and his right-wing governing coalition, and President Biden has even criticized the Israeli army’s offensive in Gaza as “overblown.” But Mr. Schumer’s speech amounted to the sharpest criticism yet from a senior American elected official, essentially urging Israelis to replace Mr. Netanyahu.

“I believe in his heart that his top priority is the security of Israel,” said Mr. Schumer, the highest-ranking Jewish elected official in the United States. “However, I also believe that Prime Minister Netanyahu has lost his way by putting his political survival ahead of Israel’s interests.”

He added: “He has been too willing to tolerate the civilian toll in Gaza, which is pushing global support for Israel to an all-time low. Israel cannot survive if it becomes a pariah.”

Mr. Schumer’s speech was the latest reflection of growing dissatisfaction among Democrats, especially progressives, over Israel’s conduct of the war and its toll on Palestinian civilians, posing a strategic and political dilemma for Mr. Biden taken care of. Republicans have tried to capitalize on that dynamic, embracing Netanyahu more closely while Democrats reject him.

The majority leader’s comments came a day after Senate Republicans invited Mr. Netanyahu to speak as a special guest at a party retreat in Washington. Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming, the No. 3 Republican, invited Netanyahu to address Republicans virtually, but he was unable to appear due to a last-minute scheduling conflict. Ambassador Michael Herzog, Israel’s envoy to the United States, spoke on his behalf.

On Thursday, Mr. Schumer was cautious in claiming that he was not trying to dictate an election outcome in Israel. And he preceded his harsh criticism of Mr. Netanyahu with a lengthy defense of the country he said American Jews “love to our hearts.” He said there had been an “incorrect perception” of the war, with Israel placing too much blame for civilian deaths in Gaza, without focusing enough on how Hamas had used Palestinian civilians as human shields. And he said he understood how difficult it was for traumatized Israelis to consider the possibility of a two-state solution at this time.

But he said: “The Netanyahu coalition will no longer meet Israel’s needs after October 7. The world has changed – radically – since then and the Israeli people are currently oppressed by a government vision that is stuck in the past. .”

Mr. Schumer said the only solution to the decades-old conflict was a two-state solution: “a demilitarized Palestinian state living side by side with Israel in equal measure of peace, security, prosperity and dignity.” He said Netanyahu, who has rejected the idea of a Palestinian state, was endangering Israel’s future.

“At this critical moment, I believe that new elections are the only way to enable a healthy and open decision-making process about Israel’s future, at a time when so many Israelis have lost confidence in their country’s vision and direction. government,” Mr. Schumer said, noting that a majority of the Israeli public “will recognize the need for change.”

“As a democracy, Israel has the right to choose its own leaders, and we must let the chips fall where they may,” he said. “But the most important thing is that Israelis are given a choice. There must be a new debate about Israel’s future after October 7.”

Mr. Schumer’s speech marked the second time he addressed the Israel-Hamas war from the Senate in a meaningful speech. In November, Mr. Schumer gave a deeply personal speech condemning the rise of anti-Semitism in America, which has flared since Israel began retaliating against Hamas for the Oct. 7 terrorist attack on defenseless Israeli civilians.

That speech seemed mainly aimed at members of his own party; he warned that some liberals and young people were “unknowingly supporting and encouraging anti-Semitism” in the name of social justice.

On Thursday, his speech took direct aim at Mr. Netanyahu and the far-right members of his governing coalition, who Mr. Schumer said did not conform to Jewish values.

“He will not deny Secretary Smotrich and Ben-Gvir and their calls for Israelis to expel Palestinians from Gaza and the West Bank,” Schumer said. “He will not commit to a military operation in Rafah that prioritizes the protection of civilian lives. He will not responsibly engage in discussions about a ‘day after’ plan for Gaza and a longer-term path to peace.”

Mr. Schumer said that if Mr. Netanyahu and his current coalition remain in power, “the United States will have no choice but to play a more active role in shaping Israeli policy by using our influence to change the current course.” change.”
