Her 2001 hit Murder On The Dancefloor clattered back into the charts thanks to the success of the sharp thriller Saltburn.

And Sophie Ellis-Bextor seems nothing short of flummoxed by the song’s newfound success, as she appeared on Lorraine on Friday morning.

The 44-year-old singer revealed she was asked ‘how she came up with the song for the film’ – before having to explain that the song is in fact 22 years old.

The hit film stars Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi, Rosamund Pike and Richard E. Grant and is directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Emerald Fennell.

And in the film’s very last scene, Barry’s character Oliver dances around a country house completely naked as the song plays in the background – something Sophie revealed she watched with her son Sonny, 19.

Sophie told how she was approached while attending the film’s premiere in November: ‘They invited me and [husband] Richard to DJ and I were singing at the party and people asked, “How did you come up with the song for the movie”…

‘I thought: “No, you don’t understand, it’s a very old song of mine, which has a new adventure.”

She also revealed that she watched the challenging film with her son and her famous mother Janet Ellis – much to Sonny’s dismay: ‘I felt like my son was stuck between my mother and his grandmother and had to watch the film.’

Earlier this week, Sophie managed to climb to the top of the Spotify charts in the United States after her hit was featured in the Amazon film.

Fans are obsessed with the new film on TikTok, Instagram and Twitter, sending Sophie’s Platinum-certified song skyrocketing up the charts.

Sophie shared the great news with her fans and thanked viewers for playing the song over and over again since the film came out. She shared a photo of the album on X, formerly known as Twitter, and wrote: “xxxxxx thank you!”

The film follows a seemingly working-class Oxford University student from Merseyside, played by Barry, 31, who falls in love with upper-class student Felix, played by Jacob, 26.

The song’s second hit comes after Sophie performed her own version of Saltburn’s ending scene to celebrate New Year’s Eve on Sunday.

She looked stunning in a multi-coloured sequin dress as she kicked and writhed down the stairs to the beat of the song in a TikTok video.

Sophie spoke to Pink News in November about the use of her song in the film, saying: ‘I really loved the film.

“It’s funny because when you’re asked if a song is involved in something, you always get a little synopsis or a rough idea of the placement. I just thought it was brilliant. It’s so beautifully shot.

The script is bouncy and fun, sharp and witty, and then you get someone dancing completely frontally naked to my song. I can’t wait for more people to see it. It’s quite an unexpected moment.’
