Daniel Ricciardo has been eliminated from the first qualifying session of the Australian F1 Grand Prix at Albert Park for the first time in history after exceeding track limits.

The Aussie had delivered what looked like a final lap to progress to Q2, before the stewards canceled that time as they felt Ricciardo had exceeded the track limits at Turn 5.

The deleted lap time would have placed Ricciardo in twelfth place and would have been good enough to progress to Q2.

Ricciardo had high expectations of a strong finish in qualifying and arrived at Albert Park today

Stewards deemed Ricciardo had exceeded the track limits at Turn 5, eliminating him from Q2 and he will start from the back row on Sunday

However, the stewards’ call means that Ricciardo will not progress to Q2 and will start on the back row of the grid based on his second-best lap time, leaving the Aussie in 18th position.

RB team boss Laurent Mekies said: ‘It’s very difficult to swallow, but that’s how it is. Daniel did very well, probably his best lap yet and more than enough to reach Q2.

“He was a little wide in Turn 5 and we’re a few inches off the track.”

The Australian has an excellent track record, winning the Formula 3 and Formula 2 titles before spending a year on the sidelines at Alpine and getting his chance in F1 with McLaren.

He impressed in his debut season last year and has the potential to become world champion.

The veteran driver's future remains in doubt as he bides his time with Red Bull's B-team.

Ricciardo would have little trouble and provide some stability, but he would be 35 by then.

Kimi Antonelli

You may not have heard of the Italian, but it's mustard. Still just 17 years old, he has won in all junior categories and has been part of the Mercedes Young Driver program since 2019.

This season he has been promoted from F4 to F2, where he is tipped to shine.

A good debut season in F2 could see Mercedes take a risk on him before 2025. Antonelli and his family are close to Mercedes boss Toto Wolff.

Mick Schumacher

Wolff has always been so incredibly supportive of Schumacher and spoke highly of him that you would at least expect him to be considered.

He knows the team from his role as reserve driver and would therefore get up to speed. But speed is also the problem.

He was shocking at Haas and if he was really that good he would still be in F1.

Alex Albon

A wiser choice would be London-born Albon. A great guy who is also very fast.

He has a fantastic relationship with Russell and would be the low-maintenance, fast-paced partnership, similar to Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas, that went to back-to-back titles.

It would take little convincing to sign Albon from Williams and Mercedes wouldn't have to pay him half of the £50 million they handed out to Hamilton.

Australian F1 star Daniel Ricciardo has told how a test drive earlier this year saved his career.

The 34-year-old Ricciardo was in sporting limbo at the time after being fired by Maclaren and eventually signed as a reserve driver for Red Bull this season.

After the British Grand Prix on July 10 at the Silverstone circuit, the Perth-born driver stunned Red Bull officials after setting a stellar time that was fractionally behind Max Verstappen, who had secured pole position days earlier.

A set of new tires had made a big difference, and suddenly Ricciardo was reborn.

“I’m not going to sugar coat it. The first timed lap was for the money,” he told F1s Beyond the grid podcast.

‘It was [only] a few hundredths of Max [Verstappen].

“Going into that round, I was so excited. I treated it like a qualifying round.

‘I just had that feeling in the car and that confidence. There were elements of the car that felt so familiar… I just knew what he could do and what he was capable of.”

Ricciardo – who finished the season at Red Bull-owned AlphaTauri after replacing Nyck de Vries – admitted he was delighted at the time.

Verstappen’s time to secure pole position was a smooth 1:26.720.

“I’m not going to say it was easy or effortless, but I had a lot of confidence that the car could do what it could do,” he added.

“When I crossed the line, when I looked at the time, I thought, ‘I don’t know if I expected to go that fast.

‘I knew it could be a very good day, but I would be lying if I said I would do that first lap with new tires. That was pretty wild. It gave me a big smile.’

At the same Grand Prix in England, Ricciardo was reunited with former Red Bull teammate and four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel.

The pair raced for Red Bull in 2014 and have remained close since, with Ricciardo praising Vettel for being a ‘true friend’ as he battled through a horror season with McLaren in 2022.

Vettel spent the 2014 season with Ricciardo at Red Bull before leaving for Ferrari, but the pair have remained close friends.

Ricciardo also stated that the German superstar had been a ‘true friend’ as he struggled to make an impact at McLaren.

“He’s answered the phone several times and just been a friend, and just shown care, just checked in, checked in like a true friend would,” he said.

‘It’s so important to have friends like that. But it’s also not that common when it comes to the grid.

“We get along well with drivers, and you do build friendships, but to have such a deeper level of friendship…some of the gestures he made and some of the kindness he showed towards me was in a way quite unexpected. .’

Ricciardo returned to Red Bull this year as a reserve driver after parting ways with McLaren twelve months earlier than planned after two unsuccessful seasons.

The American singer, 28, kicked off his sets Down Under in Brisbane on Thursday night, and what better way to be welcomed into the country with the classic, yet disgusting, Australian tradition?

Post reportedly performed the shoe-drinking act at least seven times during his concert.

He told the audience he was trying out a record and repeatedly drank beer from his shoe between songs.

The pop star even brought a few fans on stage on several occasions to perform the Australian tradition of wearing different types of shoes – even a shoe brace – in front of a packed audience.

The shoey is one of Australia’s iconic traditions and can be used as both a hazing punishment and a celebratory ritual.

It was made increasingly popular by famous athletes such as Formula 1 driver Daniel Ricciardo and UFC fighter Tai Tuivasa.

It is the custom of pouring alcohol into a sweaty shoe and then waving it.

In the past, the tradition has come under fire as critics – including prominent Australian musicians – called for its ban.

But because she was a good sport, she took a shot of Tequila from her shoe.

Meanwhile, singer Harry surprised fans in February when he performed a shoey during his show in Perth.

“This is one of the most disgusting traditions I’ve ever seen,” Harry said, before taking a drink from his $1,170 Adidas x Gucci shoe.

It’s common for fans to shout “shoo-ey!” at concerts. to sing. shoo-ey!’ hoping that the performer will agree to participate in the tradition.

Concerned fans feared Daniel Ricciardo could re-injure his hand after training with former UFC champion Max Holloway this week.

A series of images were posted Instagram on Thursday I showed the two athletes hard at work during a gym session – and it didn’t take long for the reactions to circulate online worldwide.

It also comes ahead of Las Vegas hosting an F1 race this Sunday (5pm, AEDT), with anticipation at fever pitch after a 41-year absence.

Ricciardo will be on the grid for AlphaTauri where he will look to improve on his current status of 17th in the standings.

Training closely with Holloway was typical for the brash Aussie, but as he suffered a hand injury in October, his legion of fans feared it would be sporting déjà vu.

Another said: ‘Take it easy, we don’t want to see another breakup.’

Meanwhile, Kylie Minogue headlined the opening ceremony in Sin City this week, including Tiësto, John Legend, Keith Urban and Steve Aoki also perform.

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton soaked up the atmosphere and looked sharp in a stylish black overcoat, black boots and soft black and orange tones.

Las Vegas officials also revealed that the famed Sphere has been taken over by this weekend’s Grand Prix and will be used for driver introductions, live pole positions and fans around the track.

“Sphere’s Exosphere not only complements the Las Vegas Strip Circuit, it takes it to new heights, making every round a captivating experience for fans who attend and watch on TV worldwide,” said Emily Prazer, Chief Commercial Officer of the Las Vegas Grand Prix.
