Jeff Bezos has overtaken Elon Musk as the world’s richest person, marking the first time in more than nine months that the Tesla CEO has been bumped from the top spot.

Musk was dethroned from the top of the Bloomberg Billionaires Index after Tesla shares fell 7.2 percent on Monday, taking his net worth to $197.7 billion, compared to Bezos’ $200.3 billion.

The 60-year-old Bezos has not been in first place in Bloomberg’s rankings since 2021.

While Amazon shares have more than doubled since the end of 2022 and are nearing an all-time high, Tesla is down about 50 percent from its 2021 peak.

The bulk of Bezos’ fortune comes from his 9 percent stake in Amazon, where he is the largest shareholder despite selling 50 million shares worth about $8.5 billion in February.

Bezos first surpassed Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft Inc., as the world’s richest person in 2017.

But a massive rally in Tesla shares left Bezos and Musk battling for the top spot for most of 2021.

Bezos fell far behind at the end of 2021, and this is the first time he has regained his position since then.

Here, MailOnline looks at the other mega-rich people on the list.

Wilmington: In an unpleasant event, a car collided with a Secret Service vehicle attached to Joe Biden’s motorcade on Sunday (local time). The incident rocked the president’s security as he left his campaign headquarters in Delaware. The sedan crashed into an SUV parked at a nearby intersection, about 40 meters from the US president. Security personnel immediately rushed to Biden and removed him from the building in downtown Wilmington. “Both the president and first lady are doing well,” AFP reported, citing a White House official.

“Today, at approximately 8:09 PM (0109 GMT), a Secret Service vehicle monitoring the route of the President’s motorcade was struck by another vehicle in Wilmington,” said Steve Kopek, special agent in charge and spokesman for the Secret Service.

“There was no protective significance associated with this event and the president’s motorcade departed without incident,” Kopek added.

Reporters gathered on the sidewalk outside the campaign office where President Biden and the First Lady were dining with their staffs. They tried to ask questions from a distance, but all they could capture was the president’s expression of surprise at the incident.

The security officers cornered the silver sedan and pulled guns on the vehicle’s driver.

“They are evacuating, you have to go,” an employee told reporters as security cordoned off the area.

President Joe Biden arrived safely at his parents’ home after the incident.

President Biden was interrupted during a call with reporters in downtown Wilmington, Del., on Sunday when a sedan crashed into a Secret Service vehicle protecting the president’s motorcade as he left his reelection campaign offices.

Mr. Biden and Jill Biden, the first lady, were not injured, according to the White House. They had attended an event at campaign headquarters and had dinner with members of the campaign staff.

Mr. Biden was discussing his voting numbers when, just after 8 p.m., a silver vehicle with Delaware license plates encountered a Secret Service SUV blocking an intersection with access to the street Mr. Biden was visiting.

In a statement, the Secret Service said: “There was no protective significance associated with this event,” meaning the crash was an accident and the driver was unaware Mr Biden was at the event.

“The president’s motorcade departed without incident,” the agency said in the statement.

David Karas, a spokesman for the Wilmington Police Department, said no one was injured in the collision. “Investigators are also working to determine whether impairment was a factor,” Mr. Karas said.

According to reporters from the White House press pool, authorities outside responded to the collision, surrounded the car and pointed weapons at the driver before the driver surrendered.

The officials could be heard demanding that the driver open his door, according to videos posted online. Photographers at the scene captured Mr Biden in surprise as he turned to look at the incident and before officers took him into his vehicle.

The tight security surrounding President Biden was breached in spectacular fashion on Sunday evening after a car collided with part of the presidential motorcade in Wilmington, Delaware.

Secret Service agents drew their weapons on a black driver when the vehicle appeared to ram into an SUV that had closed a street while Biden attended a nearby campaign event.

The President and First Lady had emerged from the Biden-Harris 2024 headquarters in downtown Wilmington just after 8 p.m.

The first lady wished the waiting journalists happy holidays. Just as the president was coming out, his departure was interrupted by a car hitting one of the SUVs in the motorcade.

The president and first lady were unharmed.

As Biden walked from the campaign office to his waiting armored SUV, a sedan struck a U.S. Secret Service vehicle being used to close intersections near headquarters for the president’s departure.

The car, a silver sedan with Delaware license plates driven by a black man at the wheel, appeared next to his SUV shielding the motorcade at the intersection opposite the entrance to campaign headquarters.

There was a loud bang and the president seemed genuinely shocked when the collision occurred.

The sedan attempted to continue into a closed intersection before Secret Service personnel surrounded the vehicle with weapons drawn and ordered the driver to put his hands up.

Officers quickly acted, cornering the car and pulling weapons on the driver.

The man complied and held up his hands as reporters nearby were quickly shuffled away.

State Senator Sarah McBride announced Monday that she would run for the U.S. House seat in Delaware — a bid that, if successful, would make her the first openly transgender member of the U.S. Congress.

The seat is currently held by Representative Lisa Blunt Rochester, a Democrat who said Wednesday she would pursue the Senate seat vacated by retiring Senator Thomas R. Carper. Both elections will take place next year.

Ms. McBride, 32, is no stranger to firsts: In 2012, she became the first openly transgender person to work in the White House, as an intern in President Barack Obama’s administration. She won her 2020 state senate seat in Wilmington with more than 70 percent of the general election vote, becoming the first openly transgender legislator in that position in the entire country, and ran unopposed for a second term last year.

Her candidacy comes amid an onslaught of Republican-led policies targeting LGBTQ people.

This year, 17 states passed bills aimed at gender-affirming care for transgender youth, a sharp increase from the three states that previously approved restrictions. And there are discussions to ban LGBTQ-related information for K-12 students in states like Florida, where laws prohibit public schools from teaching about sexual orientation and gender identity.

Ms. McBride, also a former national press secretary for the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest LGBTQ advocacy organization, is likely facing a major challenge in her solid blue neighborhood. But she has plenty of political capital in the state — aided by her relationship with President Biden, who wrote the foreword to the memoir she wrote in 2018. She also worked on the Attorney General’s campaigns for Beau Biden, his son who died in 2015.

Ms. McBride recently spoke to The New York Times about her candidacy. Excerpts from this conversation have been edited for clarity and length.

What topics do you hope to prioritize in your campaign?

There were so many pieces of the Build Back Better Act that have sadly been left on the cutting room floor, and it will be critical for Congress to address those policies, such as paid family and medical leave, affordable early childhood education and elderly care . Those kinds of policies will be at the center of my campaign, as will those I campaigned for in the Delaware General Assembly, such as gun safety and reproductive rights. One of the topics on which we must continue to make progress is climate change. We can’t build a fairer, more just world if we don’t protect our planet as well.

A flurry of bills in recent years have hit transgender people, such as restricting transitional procedures for children and restricting which bathrooms transgender people can use. What are your concerns for the future?

The policies you mentioned are wrong and unconstitutional, and are an attempt by MAGA Republicans to distract from the fact that they have absolutely no agenda for families and for workers in our country. They are solutions in search of a problem. They are brutal, and we know that policies that target youth, that target parents, that target families, that target the vulnerable in our society will never perform well in history. I truly believe that democracy only works if we are all involved.

What must members of your party do to comply with these laws?

I am incredibly proud that the Democratic Party has steadfast support for LGBTQ rights. We’ve seen Democrats from Montana, to Nebraska, to Virginia, to Delaware, make it clear that attacks on vulnerable members of our communities, including LGBTQ youth, will not last, and we will do everything we can to stop them.

People in this country want politicians to call on our better angels and focus on things that really matter. I don’t believe suing children and parents for discrimination is a priority for voters in Delaware or across the country.

President Biden enters 2024 struggling to maintain public approval. What do you think he and other Democrats should be thinking about?

Democrats have a strong track record and there is clearly unfinished work ahead of us. This president has focused on working families, on recognizing that we all have a responsibility to one another. I think if this president continues to contrast his priorities with the fabricated problems and culture wars of the right, this president will win.

There is a type of control that historically has come to be first of all. Worried about recoil?

There will certainly be attacks, but I am no stranger to that. What I’ve shown over the years is that I can step past those attacks and focus on what matters to the people I represent. Congress is certainly different from the Delaware State Senate, but I’m confident that when I get there, by focusing on issues that people of every party, of every ideology, and in every part of our state, I will be able to find common ground with people with whom I vehemently disagree.

Time Out has released a list of 10 best beach towns in the U.S. to avoid the crowds this summer with Siesta Key in Florida, Brewster in Massachusetts and Dewey Beach in Delaware among those making the cut.

Time Out’s US editor Virginia Gil says the experts picked these places, as they are spots ‘where you can spread out on the sand, hop over to a great restaurant without a reservation, show up to an event unplanned and spend a few days away from it all.’

Senator Thomas R. Carper, a veteran Democrat from Delaware, announced Monday that he would not be seeking re-election next year, freeing up a seat in a deep blue state that he said he hoped would go to his hand-picked successor.

Mr. Carper, 76, is in his fourth term in the Senate and is the last surviving Vietnam veteran to serve there. He has held public office since the 1970s, first as treasurer of Delaware, then as a member of Congress for ten years, then as governor, and since 2001 as a senator.

“This just seems like a good time to turn the page and move on,” Mr. Carper said at a news conference in Wilmington, Del. He added: “I still have miles to go and every day I go counts.”

The senator said he planned to do everything he could to help Representative Lisa Blunt Rochester, the Democrat who is the state’s only member of the House and was his former intern, win the race to succeed him .

As chairman of the Environment and Public Works Committee, Mr. Carper said he planned to spend his final months in Congress overseeing clean energy provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act and key projects included in the dual infrastructure legislation.

“I will continue to work 60-hour weeks,” he said.

Mr Carper said he also intended to help his friend, President Biden, succeed and win re-election, brushing aside questions about the president’s age.

“Every meeting I’ve been a part of, he’s actually sharper than the rest of us,” Mr. Carper said.

He said he called Mrs. Blunt Rochester on Monday morning and told her, “You waited patiently for me to get out of the way, and I’m getting out of the way.”

He added that he had also told her, “I hope you flee, and I hope you let me support you in that mission.”

And Mr. Carper said Mrs. Blunt Rochester replied, “Yes, I’ll let you back me up.”

Ms Blunt Rochester, also in her fourth term, has not yet announced a campaign but has publicly expressed interest in running. In a statement, she praised Mr Carper as a legislator who was “more interested in attending a local Sunday service than doing the Sunday shows, more interested in hearing from his constituents in person than getting clicks online and more interested was in the events of the day in Delaware than DC”

Senator Chuck Schumer, New York Democrat and Majority Leader, called Mr. Carper a “conscientious, hard-working, honorable and effective Senator who has done so much for his beloved Delaware and America, particularly by protecting our precious environment and strengthening our transportation systems.” .”

Mr Schumer praised Mr Carper for leading important legislation such as postal reform and reducing the effects of methane in the atmosphere.

Senator Chris Coons, also a Democrat from Delaware, said Mr. Carper relied on his background as a former governor during his time in the Senate.

“Tom Carper also mentored a generation of leaders in Delaware,” said Mr. Coons. “From my first race for County Council President, he has encouraged and supported my career in service, acting as a source of advice and encouragement when I needed it most, and as a role model for balancing family and service. “
